The States: Doing Their Own Thing...

No, no, no. **** you, Florida.

I'm all for getting rid of the shifting back and forth. Don't really care which way, standard or saving. Just pick one. Of course, it would be nice if all states went the same direction for continuity's sake. This one at a time crap will be annoying though. Hockey games in Florida gonna start at 5:00 next season?

Just like Arizona?

Or Saskatchewan? Or Hawaii? (Both without NHL teams yet.)

Agreed that the constant flipping needs to go. Either adopt DST year round or stay in standard time.

In a big way: most in the House want to take us back to the 50s.

The 1850s.

Can VA remerge?

Everybody gets to vote whether to go with daddy or mommy. But it's one time only irrevocable so no hedging your bets. You're choosing whether to spend eternity with Texas or Massachusetts so it's not as easy as it sounds.

Interesting toss-ups:

Florida
Ohio / Pennsylvania
North Carolina

Best guess:

Later we can annex Canada and Mexico to tie everything together, and keep the animals encircled as a theme park / cheap labor plantation.

I don't know. A lot of those red states would fail a competency test and might need a guardian ad litem to recommend what is in their best interest.

Re: The States: Doing Their Own Thing...

I thought the time flipping was more about the sky being lighter for children getting to school.

That was the original reason 100 years ago, but I thought the kids were the current excuse/reason

Then stop schools from starting at 7am! Instead of starting later, the legislature's fool with Mother Nature.

And it's not polite to fool with Mother Nature.

Re: The States: Doing Their Own Thing...

The South was right. We're two different countries. Time to say goodbye.

A very smart Indian friend that I mentioned this concept to strongly feels that it would be a serious mistake for the US to break into red and blue states.

His general premise was that India had had the same issues for a century, but at all costs fought off all considerations and to its benefit. Two reasons separation would be a mistake for the US - 1) He feels quite strongly that the conflict ultimately helps its vitality (IMO dubious) and 2) the two remaining US 'sub countries' would go into serious decline, and no longer be superpowers with detrimental unforeseen consequences to it and other countries (IMO probable).

I think I'd pay the price...but its still a good point.
