Kep?

@frednewspost: State police: Man hospitalized after jumping from U.S. 15 bridge in Point of Rocks

Whoa. Depending on where he hit that water can be very shallow. I don't know what the level is right now but there are slate sheets that practically come out of the water during low periods.

Assuming he went in in the very center I can see him being OK (he's 23, not 55) but I suspect to pull that stunt he was already not in the best of shape.

Probably had about a 30% chance to bite it.

Remember, joe, I am gone from MD. Been in lovely Reston, VA going on 2 years now.

The worst bloodshed in that area since the Battle Of Trump's Golf Course during the Civil War.

Balls Bluff was no joke -- it almost cost us Oliver W. Holmes. But yes I realize Dumpy's course is nowhere near it.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Elections have consequences.

On Monday, New York Democrats quickly made the most of their newfound control over the state legislature after the 2018 elections to pass a series of proposals to turn New York from one of the worst states for voting access into one of the best. Democrats approved several bills that would create an early-voting period of 10 days before Election Day, including both weekends before Election Day; consolidate the state's unique separate state and congressional primaries to save money and increase turnout; automatically update voters' registration when they move within the state; let 16- and 17-year-olds "pre-register" so they're automatically on the rolls when they turn 18; and close a loophole that let limited liability corporations give unlimited donations to candidates.

Furthermore, Democrats passed two state constitutional amendments to enable voters to register on the same day they cast a ballot, including Election Day itself, and also remove the requirement of an excuse to be able to cast an absentee mail ballot. These changes must pass the legislature again after the 2020 elections before they can go to the voters for approval in a referendum to amend the state constitution.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has previously voiced his support, meaning these statutory measures are almost certain to become law. In addition, there are ongoing efforts to pass a separate automatic voter registration bill. Once Cuomo signs these latest bills, and if voters approve the eventual constitutional amendments, voting in New York will become much more accessible, which should in turn raise the state's well-below-average turnout rate.

Democracy returns to NY. May MS, VA, TN, IN, TX, MI, etc follow.

Huh. If I were a smarter man, I just might notice some correlation with how hard it is for someone to vote based on that ranking and how the state ends up voting.

It's almost as if the party that only benefits 1% of the population wants to limit voting rights.

Has to be fake news. I pretty clearly recall being told here about how North Dakota was engaged in unconstitutional restrictions on the right to vote.

Only if you're an injun.

You gotta admit: they f-cked em, and they did it for R to win.

I'll admit no such thing. Everyone was given an ID and the native american voter turnout was at an all-time high.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Get rid of safe districts and you don't need term limits.

Precisely. Maximize competitive districts and representatives who do not serve their constituents will get the boot.

It will also mean that an administration that does poorly by the country will be severely punished in the midterms -- enough to discourage them from doing so. While a flip happened in 2018 with the Democrats picking up 40 seats, a fair map would not just have produced more of a Dem shift but also started from a Dem majority to begin with. By the actual net national vote count, the Dems should be looking at a 70-seat majority in the House, not 35.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

One last Pyrrhic victory for the forces of derp before the inevitable.

So... we'll take the majority in the VA Leg. We'll ratify. The derps will claim that deadline language outside the amendment means it doesn't count. The Court will cite passage of the 27th Amendment as proof the deadline language is irrelevant, if not Unconstitutional. The derps will claim the states which later tried to rescind ratification means we aren't at 38 states. The Court will site the 14th Amendment where states tried to rescind ratification and were told to pound sand. And that will be it. Coming in between 3 and 5 years, your 28th Amendment:

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification
