They didn't, though. It wasn't much of a force and there was a significant counter-effort in Parliament we weren't even worth that.

We look at all this with parochial hindsight. At the time we were not a particularly useful holding. As long as they kept getting their Carolina pine and tar for their navy, the rest of us were on roughly the same expropriation level as the Sudan.

Now add that we refused to pay our share of the taxes that had paid for the frontier wars that made the place safe in the first place, and...
