The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

Bob Gray

Official Bottom Ten Spokesman
Super-regional weekend winds up today, so the CWS is just around the corner. Here in Tempe ASU had a couple of epic battles with Arkansas, winning both in 12 innings. ASU probably isn't quite as talented overall as some of the recent Pat Murphy teams, but they have deeper pitching, and I have to say there is a better vibe about the team than in recent years under Murphy.

The field so far is:
ASU
TCU
UCLA
South Carolina
Florida State
Florida

Today's matchups for the last two spots are:
Oklahoma vs. Virginia
Clemson vs. Alabama

Pretty pleased that three of the teams I follow made the regionals, and that two of them came with-in a game of the super regionals (UC-Irvine and Minnesota), and that one came with-in a run of the CWS (Vanderbilt). Hopefully they can all get over the hump next year...

Outside of TCU and the OU/UVA winner, it's all the southern standbys. Guess I won't be too motivated to get to many games this year.

At least Texas isn't coming. Can't stand those arrogant *****s.

I was disappointed Coastal Carolina didn't make it, would have added some new blood to the field.

Same here. TCU beating Texas was a pleasant surprise.

I wanted to see CC make it for the sole fact that I got to umpire baseball games on their field :p

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

Clemson beats Alabama to punch their ticket to Omaha.

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

Some nice upsets in the super-regionals, as only three of eight nationally seeded teams advance. Can't say I expected ASU's bracket to lack any other national seeds. But, at this stage, there's no easy games, so it should be a great CWS. I do like ASU's first game, where they play Clemson, who they swept last year in a super-regional.

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

The tournament kicked off today with two beatdowns. The two Florida schools got taken apart rather efficiently. As a Pac 10 guy it was nice to see UCLA come out and beat Florida with a solid pitching display and TCU looked even stronger by taking down FSU, 8-1.

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

That was a solid display by TCU and UCLA. Here's hoping the southeastern teams keep under performing today!

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

Oklahoma won a fairly tense game today with South Carolina. It came down to a bases loaded two outs situation in a 4-3 ending with a pop up. It took 9 hours to play because of a very lengthy rain delay thats pushed the final opening round game between Arizona State and Clemson to Monday.

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

Yeah, good luck getting that triple header in today. it's as stormy now as it was all day yesterday. Supposed to clear up by noon, but not sure that leaves enough time for 3 games today.

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

Can't say I like seeing ASU pushed out a day, as whoever pitches today will have less rest than if they'd played yesterday. But thankfully ASU has its deepest staff in quite a few years. Of course if they can win a couple, they get a break, but if they get into the loser's bracket, then your pitching depth can dissipate quickly.

Re: The Road to Omaha - Last Hurrah at The Blatt

One of the Florida schools will be saying good bye today and that's good news.
