Re: The PPACA Thread Part VI: Tax Cuts Are More Important Than Your Health Care!
There was a startling statistic on Nova this week. Opioid addiction is killing so many people it’s like a full 737 crashing every single day.
Could you imagine the response if planes started falling out the sky daily?
I know we have seen some movement on this, but my god. I don’t feel like it’s within four orders of magnitude the response we would see. Delta, United, Boeing, and Airbus would all have their CEOs locked up. How these pain pill companies have survived thus far without any repercussions is astonishing.
Absolutely correct. I know I get a little tiresome bringing up the harm caused by Big Sugar, but it's the same dynamic. We start wars over injuries that are small in comparison, for two primary reasons: 1) monkey brain fear of threat associated with a different tribe 2) manipulated by chess masters who profit from war in some way. Otherwise, those deaths caused by opioids or sugar or alcohol, unless they immediately affect us, are like Auden described in
Musee des Beau Arts:
About suffering they were never wrong,
The old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position: how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
