split off from? they were never attached. they are not real doctors anyhow :)

Surgeons weren't doctors until the Napoleanic wars. Before that they were technicians -- literally "saw bones."

I'm interested in Fish's question, too. What happened with dentists to carve out their own little kingdom? From bronco's AM link:

But the dental profession really became a profession in 1840 in Baltimore. That was when the first dental college in the world was opened, I found out, and that was thanks to the efforts of a couple of dentists who were kind of self-trained. Their names were Chapin Harris and Horace Hayden. They approached the physicians at the college of medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore with the idea of adding dental instruction to the medical course there, because they really believed that dentistry was more than a mechanical challenge, that it deserved status as a profession, and a course of study, and licensing, and peer-reviewed scientific consideration. But the physicians, the story goes, rejected their proposal and said the subject of dentistry was of little consequence.

That event is remembered as the “historic rebuff.” It's still talked about sometimes, not a lot, but it’s seen as a symbolic event and it’s continued to define the relationships between medical and dental education and medical and dental healthcare systems in funny ways. Dentists still drill and fill teeth and physicians still look at the body from the tonsils south. Medical and dental education is still provided separately almost everywhere in this country and our two systems have grown up to provide care separately, too.

What are you, an anti-Dentite? First it starts with a few jokes, next thing you'll be saying they should have their own schools.. ;)

if anything it is tied to them being able to finagle their way into the ponzi scheme that is insurance. then if anything that fact that you don't need to buy dental insurance keeps it cheap :)

I'm not sure why it is a completely separate healthcare system, however:
Poor people don't go to the dentist. And everyone else gets dental insurance at work that covers two visits a year, which is enough to prevent most problems that lead to expensive treatment. If you could insure just your spleen I assume the rates would be pretty good.

And under the New Republican plan if you had a spleen policy you would be listed on all stats going forward as COVERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the one flaw I wish Obamacare had fixed. Add two preventative care cleanings plus x-rays for everyone. I can't even imagine the money that would save our nation.

Maybe it did. I just don't recall.

Poor people grew up not going to the dentist. It just isn't something they are going to start doing... not even on their radar.
I know of elementary schools that include a dental clinic, I assume to try to break the habit neglecting dental health
