The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

Depends on your definition of old. This bill effects everyone over 50 until they reach Medicare. It's going to be devastating for me and people like me.

I am over 50 and under 65. I am not old. I am fashionably decrepit.

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

I think it hurts old people even more than poor people. And who is the Republican's major constituency? And who turns out to vote in higher numbers by demographic group?

Isn't it something like someone in their early 60's making about $25,000/year will pay half their income for insurance?

if they die, the repubs get credit for saving social security too!!!! :D

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

If the Kochs go to war with Trump, we are all winners. :)

Best case today might be that it goes to a vote and fails. They probably aren't stupid enough to do that but it would be great TV. People remember that the House has voted to repeal the bill numerous times so not being able to get something done while they have complete control shows how petty and idiotic all those previous votes were.

Ryan will pull it from the floor if he doesn't have the votes. That is, if he knows. So far the 'dumbs have stabbed in the front, but they've got enough poison in their veins that if they feel dissed they could set him up.

Now that would be glorious. Obama was right. Stand back and let the Republicans own this, whatever happens.

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

This is a fight the Dems dont need to be any part of. Let the GOP eat their own. No matter what the Dems win if they just stay away.

"Strange game...the only winning move is not to play!"

Isn't Ryan better off putting it for a vote and just taking his lumps? Pull it from the floor and all the so-called "momentum" is gone. The whole point of a quick jamming of a bill through the House was to not give the CBO a chance to evaluate the cave in to the Knuckledragger Caucus otherwise the Goopers in Hillary districts would bail. Delay that and the CBO is going to weigh in with even worse news. I don't expect media coverage and public opinion of this to improve over time.

Haven't you heard? The CBO is Fake News.

No. I suppose there might be some bizarre chain of events where that might be better for the GOP (though nothing occurs to me now), but not Ryan.

If he puts THE signature GOP initiative up for a vote, with the White House and majorities in both chambers, after not just campaigning on it explicitly in the prior election but throwing an 8-year-long howler monkey poop/vomit festival, and he LOSES THE VOTE... well, at minimum Ryan is disgraced, loses the speakership if not immediately on a vote to vacate the chair then in 2018, and with it any chance for the presidency.

Plus, if Trumpy's Toy gets broken, Trump is going to go 187 on anything with a pulse within five miles of 1600.

I think I just jizzed my keyboard.

I also think it really hurts don.

This whole focus on doing a lot in the first 100 days is falling apart fast, and this is the last chance at being as significant as he thinks he is.

The plan is SO NOT WHAT was run on, it's not even funny- but don is "1000%" behind it (apparently that's how much he told an R rep). This may be his last chance of being really significant in 100 days.

So I'm torn whether to see it pass and F things up royally, or fail and have paul and don walk with their heads down.

Well, from what I remember from his candidacy ISIS should be destroyed by now.

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

The better part of valor.

House conservatives left a meeting with President Donald Trump on Thursday without a deal on changes to the Republican health care bill that would repeal and replace the 2010 health care law, putting a vote later in the day in doubt.

The apparent offer on the table is something the House Freedom Caucus, the bloc of far right conservatives that has held its ground against Republican leadership, have deemed a non-starter.

Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., said after a meeting between members of the House Freedom Caucus and President Donald Trump that there was no deal on the bill, also known as the American Health Care Act. “There were no new concessions,” Amash told reporters.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., predicted that there won’t be enough time this week to make the changes needed to the GOP health bill to bring enough conservative Republican members on board.

“I don’t think there’s time in two or three hours to re-architect a sixth of our economy and vote on this bill,” he said. “It’s done for this week.”

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

I think Trump gets to pin this on Ryan and walks away. He can (credibly, for once) argue that he did all he could, but inherited a bill that was 40 votes short. Thanks to his efforts and personal lobbying he cut that down, but its up to Paul Ryan to manage his own caucus. Trump would have a point on that score if he chooses to play it that way.

What I could see happening is either Ryan puts it to a vote and sees it go down, or he delays it, gives in completely to the Knuckledragger Caucus, gets it passed by the narrowest of margins (really, every Rep in Hillary district can vote against it except for 2 and it'd pass) and then sends it to the Senate where it becomes Itch McConnell's problem with no chance of passing. No way 51 senators go along with repealing Medicare expansion, getting rid of minimum coverage requirements, repealing pre-existing condition protections and throwing up to 25 year olds off parents insurance. At some point this bill stopped making any semblance of sense.

The AHCA now has a clause that allows states to revoke Medicaid if a women hasn't gotten a job 8 weeks after giving birth!

Remember folks. No war on women.

Except that he set the parameters...he forced their hand by promising it so early on. He cant pass the buck because he is on record as wanting a bill, and supporting the bill that is now dead in the water.
