The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

I graduated B. Ch. E from Minnesota ten years ago today. I entered the job market on the cusp of the greatest economic turndowns since the 30s and a time of great uncertainty.

Today my brother graduated from med school (Minnesota) in a time of great uncertainty for the medical industry. We have no idea what is going to happen or how this is going to play over the next year. Funny how life works sometimes.

Here's to him and the medical profession.

My family member just graduated from orthopedic surgery residency..with a crap ton of loans...here's to people who are smarter than we are

Not sure what they were taking shots of, but it must be working. North Dakota has one of the highest average IQs in the country.

OK, I laughed.

I mean...I hope citing Glenn Beck's media outlet, themselves citing a study from a California real estate group that surveyed social media posts for vocab, grammar, etc., would be a joke.

Yeah...bars at UND are full of class :D

I see what you did there.

To be fair, I was using the same website that a Minnesota fan had used to show Minnesota's mental superiority to Michigan's. But sometimes subtlety is lost when you're a step ahead of the game. :p:D:D

My brother said that's one of the most competitive residencies to get into.

It's right up there with dermatology and the rest of the "surgery" specialties. They all pay extremely well, even compared to some of the organ specialties, thus the competition. If you're a cutter, and a GOOD cutter, you can really clean up.

In This case the poor guy is doing a fellowship at USC for sports medicine, then hopes to go home to Seattle to practice

Wait, you aren't confusing orthopedic surgeons with dermatologists, right?

It is a super difficult residency...as my cousin found out five years ago when he got matched with his program...but he got matched

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

My brother got matched right back with Minnesota's peds. He's in a weird program where he's been in residency for a few months now despite graduating today. It's a pilot program but he's made us all proud.

I'm guessing he's going to end up in pediatric cardiology since that's what he wants to specialize in. But secretly, with his master's in public health and MD, he's either going to run a department or a hospital some day.

Huh, I thought he graduated like a year or two ago...

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

I mean, he kind of did. He's piloting a program where you complete med school when you complete your competencies instead of completing four years time.

No, I'm not. I'm saying that dermatology is a very competitive specialty, and that many dermatologists clean up as much as a general surgeon (think docs who do appendectomies, gastric bypasses, and such).

I'm in no way insulting your relative. He's done more post-grad than my glorified MBA, "IT Management" ever will. :p

Ah, makes sense.

My son broke his femur skiing in January. All together it was around $35 K from ER admittance to going home. Over $10K of that was the fee for the pediatric orthopedic surgeon for a surgery that was 1-2 hours. No complaints though. He's not 100% yet, but is able to run now. The anesthesiologist made out pretty well too. He gets to go back in the fall to have the hardware taken out. I'm sure this will be considered a preexisting condition so it gives insurance companies another reason to **** him over when he is an adult on his own plan.

Re: The PPACA Thread Part IV - Repeal & Replace, or Something...

Specialists make a ton of money. Family physicians not so much. That's wrong. No new ideas in Health Care. Until then we'll always pay the most and have the worst outcomes.
