As I understand it, opposition to party corruption and special interests (as opposed to the nation / national interest) was one of the only organizing principles behind the movement.
The political landscape was so different back then that their policies probably can't help but look incoherent to a 21st century observer.

That's probably true. I'm sure the burning issues of today will look bizarre to the 2110 electorate (which, after the 59th amendment, will include my box turtle lover and my German-made sports car, and about time too).
Still, the weirdest thing about that laundry list of policies is they didn't reflect warring special interests. The same people had all those notions bouncing around in their heads at the same time, and half of them contradicted the other half.
Take pro-life death penalty advocates and imagine the same incoherence across virtually every issue.

I call bull on that. No way you can convince 74% of the population knew who she was yesterday, no way.

Probably no better example than support for women's suffrage, but uneasiness (okay, lingering racism) over the prospect of universal suffrage. They were characters.
But they recognized that in a two-party system, both parties would stand for the same thing (re-election), so I'll give them points for that. Multiple parties do make things more interesting.
Anyway . . . I'm still a bit nonplussed over the Kagan nomination. Did Obama really think that he could avoid a confirmation dispute in an election year?

I agree that fewer than 1% of Americans knew who Kagan was before Monday. Those are zombie numbers based on reflex approval / reflex hatred of Obama.
But it isn't as if anybody but a ConLaw graduate is going to actually make up his or her mind about her independently, so the final approval/disapproval will stay about 50/40/10, based on whether you live in Glennbeckistan.
It would have been funny if they split the sample into halves and asked two questions:
Do you approve of Elena Kagan?
Do you approve of President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Elena Kagan?
I'll bet you the former question would have gotten 98% "I don't know," while the latter got the results quoted. People... and this is a secret between you and me... people are not very bright.

Interesting. I've got my fingers crossed her personal life doesn't become part of the confirmation process. And I think absent some bombshell we're unaware of, she'll be easily confirmed. I wouldn't have selected her, but then I didn't win the presidency. Elections have consequences. And I agree with George Will's piece today in which he suggests "turning down the temperature" on these nominations.
