Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

They're below .500, who cares if they get any votes

I would like to see them get some votes. I think that the boys deserve some recognition.

Bemidji has 2 first place votes and they had only split with Minnesota and beaten a bunch of really bad teams. Now Bemidji has "split" with Miami and Ohio state, so clearly they are good, but I do not see them as a first place vote getter.

Right now, Maine has got to be in the top 15 or top 10. Maine really out played Lowell from start to finish, and then did it again against St Lawrence. In past years, Maine has played down to lesser competition. THIS year's team looks like they might be able to play with some killer instinct.

Agree 100%. I don't think that there are 15 better teams in the country right now. I'm still shocked about last nights result. I expected Maine would beat lowell but didn't want to post on here and jinx it. I really thought they would have a tough time with slu though where slu was so much fresher. It seems like you hardly ever see blowouts nowadays to.

Two days in a row of positive posts??

Wish I had been on hand for these two, but we had family obligations that were just as fun.

After I saw Maine play two at NU I was impressed with the recruiting, and now they are building confidence. Having said that big weekend ahead as they are finally playing an opponent they will be favored against.

I haven't seen that many teams play but if Maine is top 10 then this really is a down year. 2 fridays ago Maine was playing dead for BC and now they're a top ten team? If they sweep PC I could see it but....

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Maine either played a really strong game, or SLU just really isn't very good. Whatever the reason, maybe Timid Tim wanted to make a big impression on the southern part of the state about what a great coach he is and save his job, the team played a solid strong game all around. They looked agressive and confident, two things lacking in Maine teams the last few seasons. Looked way quicker than SLU too.

Really didn't think Darling played a great game though, he was fighting the puck all game it seemed. Probably only handled about a quarter of the chances cleanly, the rest he was either muffing with his glove or body and having to scramble to cover the puck as it fell at his feet. Thought Wilson looked a lot sharper in his one period of work.

Hard to pick a standout, as a lot of guys played great. Looks like Dee has decided he wants to be a goal scorer. Shemansky is as fun to watch as you'd figure from hearing the radio. Liedermark I thought didn't really stand ouit, I mean, he didn't do anything to make you notice him, but he knows where to be on the ice, offensively and defensively, and he's smart with where to put the puck. And glad to see Andersson get his stick on the shot to score his first career goal. Still wonder why TIMMAY didn't play him much last year, as he looks like a solid two-way player.

The young kids on D looked pretty good, only one glaring error I noticed was on an SLU breakaway, and the D-man left his spot to take the shooter, leaving the other winger wide open, as Dek was racing to get back to cover him. Luckily he whiffed on the rebound, it may have jumped over his stick, as he had wide open net to put it into. Let the goalie have the shooter, take the pass away.

Still don't think TIMMAY is the answer, but if he, and whoever else, can keep the team playing like this, really working hard and giving an all-out effort every game, I'll take it. If they keep playing like this, they just might surprise us all this year.

That would be awesome if so, Dee was pretty highly touted coming out of Minn. never realized he played on a line with Blake Wheeler in HS

Nice change that he is given the opportunity to play and develop this year

maine's not that good and st lawrence is not that bad... things just kinda snowballed... maine was much faster and rarely out of position... in additin to the ten goals, they hit three posts that i recall... really were firing on all cylinders...

anyone else think that flynn looks like matt martin out there with the tucked in sweater et al?

Did you even watch a game last year? He was given a ton of ice time even strength and on the PP and he did nothing with it. Hopefully this year he finally takes a step forward and so far he has.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

I missed the Portland game for the first time in 10-12 years, and this happens!:o Certainly,it's encouraging,but...

All the usual nutcases on here are maybe too sanguine at this point,ya think?"Top-10"??? I get to see a ton of teams on the tube, and there is a load of mediocraty out there, but Maine is no where near the top-10 right now,IMO.

Do they have the talent?Yeah,I think they do,and I'm going on what I saw at the Union debacle, alone. That showed me that the new guys were good, and also that this team is capable of playing at either end of the spectrum...And that we will go as Darling goes.

Maine needs to get hot, hot, hot to climb high enough in the PWR to even get a sniff at the NCAA's.Hope their confidence is up and they're ready to make a run.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Maine's got a long way yet to go. They still need to experience the swollen head syndrome from a little bit of success, the subsequent smackdown, and the (hopefully) resurgence of confidence after getting their heads back in the game. Still too young to do too much damage in this league.

Sound just like Timmay dont I ??

thank you.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Nice to finally have a two win weekend. Its been quite awhile. Lets hope it continues against PC. Those 4 points are critical. Saturday's outburst aside, it appears this team can definitely put the puck in the net. It will come down to goaltending and d per usual. They seem to have a good combination of guys that are committed to both ends of the ice. Here's hoping the confidence and momentum continue to build.

There is a lot to be positive about, but it all stems from coaching changes. Tim is implementing things that a few of us nutcases have been begging for for YEARS.

Tim either bought a book, or he is listening to someone. There is a lot to be positive about!!!
At Lowell, Maine had about 7 scoring opportunities come from beautiful drop passes. I can count on ONE hand the number of drop passes Maine has attempted since Jankus scored on one against Denver in 2004.

Tim Called a time out with 10 minutes left against Lowell with a 1 goal lead.

The players are flip-flopping at the points on the powerplay and they are messing up the opponent's "box" defense, and while they might lose the puck, they are still messing with the defense and creating possible scoring chances.
Players are constantly OUT FRONT and Maine does not always have 3 forwards (and possibly a defenseman) on the puck in the offensive zone. Somehow, someone got it into Tim's head that it is a good thing to have someone on the weak side, ready to accept a pass, or at least spreading out the defense.

Players are crashing the net and occasionally running opposing goaltenders. When was the last time a player came CLOSE to running a goalie?
Maine scored about 8 goals on Saturday by crashing the net and getting a pass from someone who would have, in past years, just shot, because there would have been nobody to pass to.
On Friday, maine scored 2 of 3 goals by screening the goalie and tipping the puck (I know that Flynn was not credited with the second goal, but I still swear he tipped in a shot that was going wide... either way, he was out front on one goal and Shemansky scored by tipping in another... who was the last Black Bear to hang out out front and tip in goals???).

If Maine sweeps Providence and does not "play down to the competition", then I think that there is a real reason for hope.

Also, I think it was rufus who pointed out that Darling was not sharp. He had to go way out of his crease during scrambles to poke pucks to the side boards. I have a feeling that BC would have scored on some of those... StLawrence's ONLY goal came on one of darlings trips to the end of Ben's old 25 foot leash... He could not get back anywhere near in time to make a second save after he slid way out of position.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Good weekend...NOT a Top 20 team..yet.....will get a few votes.....confidence building weekend....NOW they need to think Providence and not get Ambushed............

He has strayed a little at Alfond but nothing like Bishop would do. Plus, wouldn't a 5-0 lead make you lose a little concentration?

I prefer not to be so critical and negative. Maine won the game. Maine won the game by 9 goals. Enjoy the win and the experience of winning as a fan. :) Who knows what tomorrow may bring. Enjoy the present time. Good advice for life in general, now that I think about it.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Sounds like a great weekend for the Bears. I hope the team continues to improve. I think this year's team has way more potential than last year's, but I think references to them being a top 10 team are a bit premature. I remembered last year's discussion on how Maine had done in the 1st half and how they would fair in the 2nd half of the season. Granted, this discussion took place over Christmas 08 and there are several games between now and Christmas 09. I included the web address to the 08 discussion below. While I want to be optimistic, last year was not that long ago:

my original comment about Maine getting some national recognition and a potential ranking at 15th to 10th was in the context of Bemidji getting 2 number 1 votes after not having played a single good team, but having a great record (11-1 at the time)... now Bemidji has won and lost this weekend against two good teams, so I am pretty sure they will lose their number 1 votes.

Maine had not even been "others receiving votes"
After beating UVM at 7, BU, mistakenly at 7, tieing BC at about number 10, beating State, currently in the top 10, beating Lowell who had 2 number 1 votes and was at third... the 2 losses to Union have got to be forgotten by the pollsters, and Maine has got to crack the top 20... Maine's strength of schedule is in the very top of the country so far, that has got to count for something.

mediocre teams do not beat D-1 opponents 10-1, EVER.

all I was saying is that the pollsters ought to rank maine in a decent spot THIS WEEK
