Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Hi guys, friendly Red Wings fan here :D ..... Just curious, what improvements do you see in Gus Nyquist's game since last year? I was fortunate enough to see 5 or 6 Black Bears games last season and Gus quickly became my favorite Wings prospect. Love his game. I told some fellow Wings fans last year that he would break out this season and I'm happy to see that coming to fruition. I haven't seen a Maine game yet this year though, so I'm curious to know what, other than being more comfortable and experienced, has changed in his game. Is he looking stronger out there?

Very disappointed that, according to college hockey tv schedules, I'll only get to see a couple Black Bears games this year

Good luck to Maine this year!

Other than what you mentioned (Comfort and experience) which are big improvements....his forecheck is much, much, much stronger. He gets after it in the offensive zone and gives defenders the business almost as relentlessly as these two freshmen who we're all falling in love with quickly (Adam Shemansky and Matt Mangene)

He does look stronger, and more willing to play the body...but he definitely has another year or two, MINIMUM, to try and bulk up and get his size and speed up enough to be effective at the professional level. Even though they said "they feel comfortable tucking him away for 4 years"....if he continues on this pace I am positive that Detroit will try hard to bring him into Grand Rapids next year, and unfortunately, he might take the bait.

This is not simply a bias because I want to keep him for four years but I will say this....if he goes to Grand Rapids next year.....he probably won't dazzle you for at least 2 years. He is an exceptional player in the making no doubt, certainly elite at his current level with a multitude of future potential.....but if he signs that contract this offseason....I think he might have a rude awakening.

I think he's in the PERFECT situation to continue bulking up (he was in the coorider warming up a few times last year when fans were walking in and the guy had sticks for arms! I'm confident he's developed physically since then), continue developing his confidence, enjoy the limelight of superstar status at his current level and adapt to the pressures that come with that role as Maine hopefully gets to play games of greater importance down the road and for the next few years.

I think the one thing that is really helping his effectiveness is his common sense out there. We know he has creative stick skills....but he really shows great sense of when its appropriate to be creative, and when to stick to fundamental hockey.

quite a bit stronger... he's put on between 10-15 pounds of muscle which has certainly made him more strong on the puck and in the forecheck

Anyone know what happened to Dee. Didn't see him in the 3rd period.

he went into the boards awkwardly, shoulder injury by the way he was holding his arm.

Good win, thought the reffing was a little one sided and basically the refs sucked. Not sure who # 23 is but he was awful, Fryer wasn't much better and the linesman blew several calls. Darling had a good game, I thought Dek and Swallow did also. Nemec and Hegarty were shaky at best.

You mean Hobey Nyquist? Stronger, faster, shiftier. He's becoming a game-takeover kind of player. His second goal last night was hi-lite reel material beating 3 defensemen and the goalie with a perfect shot. Great attitude as well....and a humble kid. We need to recruit more over there. :)

On the play that Darling came out to play the puck and looked like his skate dug in awkwardly in the ice..{late 3rd period}..did anyone notice that he favored his leg afterwards...? He went to the bench during a TV time-out and was motioning towards the back of his leg....he looked to be testing his leg as the final minutes went by....anyone know if he tweaked anything?

Hockey East has the worst officials in the country by far. It's only a matter of time before Bunyon makes an appearance at the Alfond. It was a nice win last night and let's get the sweep tonight.

Yes I saw the same thing and when he came to the bench he flexed his leg while talking with Culina. However, one of the other players on the bench said something to him that brought a huge grin on his face before heading back to the net. I don’t believe it was anything serious.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dee sits tonight.

Banwell got his knee scoped so you won't see him for awhile

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

GoMaine24, gscott13, and acs64, thanks for the replies! Good to hear all positive things about Gus. A lot of Wings fans are hoping the Wings sign him after this season, but I hope they sign him when he is ready. If that's after the 2010-11 season, I'm fine with that. Proper development is important, and NCAA hockey is a great place for strength and conditioning. The Wings do a great job cultivating their prospects, so if they don't think Gus can step into a top-9 role right away with Grand Rapids, I'm sure they'll keep him at Maine another year (or two, though that looks unlikely).

I'll just add to the others. He has great vision and sees plays developing well. He spent this past summer back in Sweden skating and getting stronger. I am not trying to be selfish but, I don't think he is ready to leave college hockey yet.

The officiating wasn't good. I missed the pre-game, is Solomon out for awhile?

No. the ECAC is much worse. The WCHA might be even worse than that.

Bunyon is awful, but you knew that.

Solomon is playing tonight (Saturday night). Dee is out with a minor shoulder sprain, but may be back for Northeastern.

Nice weekend for the boyz. I am having these very strange feelings. It almost feels like hope and pride. My god is this possible?!? Nice to feel good about this team again.
