The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

Word got back to the players you mentioned and were not liked. Andrew HAS NOT left the team. While he is debating he has not ruled out returning. Cook has ALSO NOT left the team. Everyone tries out. Cook had a lot of potential and who knows what an off season could do. There are others who are on a "try out" basis but there is only one player so far who has actually left for sure. As I said, wait till September when things are concrete, or they have publicly announced their plans.
like I posted b4, theres a lot more than hockey that goes into the decision as we know ...still a few months b4 school starts.wait and see....and i think its a official thread heist

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

I am not one to read into rumors and I can't say yes one person is leaving or not I can just go by what I read and from what I saw Andrew Smith said on Twitter it doesn't sound like he is coming back. "It was a dream of mine to play NCAA hockey and today it is over, thank you teammates for an experience that ill never forget #Plattsburgh" What does this mean I have no clue because I am not him, it could be sombody pulling a prank and hijacking his twitter account or it could be something serious. Either way I wish him nothing but the best of luck in the future on and off the ice, once a Cardinal always a Cardinal no matter what happens. Please do not take it as I am feeding into the rumor I am just saying what I saw. He maybe will be back but we will not know for sure until this fall.

I just read on Mary Gosek's Facebook page that Paula Roll, wife of former Lakercoach and current Naz coach George Roll, dies after a long battle with cancer....paryers to George, his family....

Just a quick recruiting update:

Last year Oswego had 24 players on the roster, which was below average for most schools (certainly the top 5 ranked schools throughout the season). Oswego lost 14 seniors to graduation. They lost:
Goalies: 2
Defense: 4
Offense: 8

So far in recruiting we have:
Goalies: 2
Defense: 5
Offense: 9

Assuming that nobody leaves the team and that all the recruits make the roster, we should have a full team plus a few backups in case of injuries without much issue. But that's an assumption. Sometimes people leave the team. Sometimes for bad reasons like they failed a couple classes, or good reasons like they got recruited by the Florida Panthers.

So the good news is that we seem to have a decent class coming in to join some good proven talent. Now we just hope it all works out. Which it doesn't always do.

From my point of view, you have the good and bad reversed. If someone does not make it academically, they should not be playing hockey (or any other sport). That's the concept of the student-athlete as it should be viewed.

For that reason, reason #1 indicates someone who had no business playing college hockey in the first place. If their priorities were not with their education, they should never have enrolled.

I think you have my definition of the words "good" and "bad" mixed up. You're indeed correct about the student-athlete relationship that is of utmost importance. The reason I would say that would be bad is because it makes me feel bad in my insides. I feel like "Wow, the guy couldn't pass his classes and now we lost that player. We gain nothing here and we lose a player. He didn't bring pride to the school, and all the work he did doesn't really matter." When a player is booted for grades I don't think "Yay we weaseled out a fake!" I think "What a shame, a guy with so much potential letting it all slip away." But if someone gets recruited to play for a professional hockey team, they do bring pride to Oswego. That makes me happy in my insides.

I've heard we have 18 recruits this season, so there's two we haven't yet heard about, I hope they're D1 Transfers

I think 20 sounds about right, as I am sure all will not make it to school ..i.e. we had 3 recruits last yr and 2 showed up, the other was at Neumann i believe......we seems to have a lot of guys who were middle of the pack players, this may be done by committee as they say this yr..only a few guys who look to be top d3 as players" on paper", but ya NEVER know do ya, will make for a interesting beginning of the yr...enjoy your 4th

Lot of prime scoring spots to replace. Everyone coming in will have plenty of opportunity to earn big time minutes.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

True. This is the way it is in a rebuilding year. One never knows until the first game what you are getting. But, hey, every good team starts somewhere and Oswego always manages to put together a skilled team and I'm sure this year will be no different. As a Cardinal fan, I have seen this happen time and time again. I always kind of looked forward to it. Just saying.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

I'm not too worried just yet. The last time that Oswego "re-loaded" after losing about a dozen seniors they won the SUNYAC championship.

If we really have 20 people coming in, that's great. Though even if 3 or 4 of them flake, there's going to be a number of freshmen who don't get any icetime at all this season (or close to none). While it's nice to have the backup, the fact that there's only 2 seniors this year could mean that those freshmen who don't become a regular could be looking at 2 years of little to no icetime. We could have a Stan Smrke situation where they get dissatisfied and leave for a better opportunity somewhere else. We already have 10 guys coming back this season, so if all 20 of the new guys show up in September, that's a 30 person team. Having too many people can be harmful too.

So question posed here, of the recruited guys we know of so far, who is looking to be the top 3 forwards? I know you can't really replace a line like Rodrigues/Whitelaw/Moodie, but which guys look like they could shine? Just based off of what I'm seeing it looks like Gosek might be trying to put together a more defensive team this time around. It's a valid strategy, though I'll miss the 10-1, 8-3, 6-0 blowouts.

EDIT: Also a brief look at Plattsburgh's recruits this year shows a lot of the same types of guy with the notable exception of Koerner. The numbers he put up in juniors were Whitelaw-esque. A definite potential candidate for rookie of the year.

From what I understand, Koerner of Plattsburgh is the real deal. I don't know about Whitelaw comparisons......??? (but wouldn't that be cool!!)

Did the 10-1, 8-3, 6-0 blowouts produce a national champion?

Yes.. 2007...

10/15: Morrisville 9-1
11/10: Fredonia 8-0
12/1: Potsdam 8-1
12/8: J&W 9-1
12/9: J&W 15-0
1/26: Brockport 6-0
2/9: Potsdam 8-1
3/10: Norwich 3-0

Ok ok 3-0 is not a blowout but I couldn't help myself :p
