The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

Just a small observation that the point totals listed in the standings you posted aren't accurate (the records are though). Ferris has two more points than Minnesota State.

Thanks. I've fixed it. Even though I link the post, I audit the Google Docs thing a bit better (last week's oversight to the contrary). Editing tables is a pain. I am very thankful to have more sets of eyes on it.

One thing about this years WCHA, everyone is so close. there is no one, well except huntsville, that doesn't totally deserve to be in the playoffs. It'll be tough for whoever it is that misses out..

random observation 1, Mankato has a killer power play. !
Random observation 2: the BGSU @ UAA series will be tough.

I had my reservations about the break up of the old WCHA, but I am thrilled with the new league. Financially it's tougher, they aren't getting the big bucks from the WCHA playoffs any more, and I'm sure the smaller schools are feeling the pinch. For the fans, however, it's been exciting hockey to watch, and I don't miss any of the schools that left.

Would agree with that. They move it well and seem to crash the net better during the PP. And it's a good thing, because 34 of our 74 goals in conference play are on the PP. We're getting outscored for the conference season in 5 on 5 play. Without the power play, we likely have a losing record.

The power play for Minnesota State has been awesome, and JP Lafontaine is having an amazing year on special teams. With that being said, their aggressive style has also caused them to give up several short handed goals.

I agree, I don't miss any of the other schools either. The WCHA has been a very competitive league, where you can not take many series for granted. Good competition will create new rivalries (I already dislike Ferris St.). I hope to see the attendance improve throughout the league, and I hope we can get back to the original Final Five format.

I miss the old WCHA for the ease of travel to road games here in the twin cities but otherwise this league has been fun to follow (I can say that now that MTU is finally where I thought it should be).

I see many growing pains for the WCHA. The Attendence is very low. In NC games the WCHA only has a winning record against the AHA.Hoping the Final Five returns instead of four.

I do miss seeing big ten schools being forced to slum it in Houghton. And we've a good set of family friends that always made the trip over when the Gophers played.

I also miss having a series in Madison that was nice and close to get to. But that's a selfish reason. :)

Also wish Duluth was still in the WCHA. Having all 4 Lake Superior teams in the same league would have been nice.

On the flip side... Holy crap this log jam in the middle is nuts and exciting to see. I wish the OOC games where a bit better. But I'm hoping to see Ferris upset and thus we get 2 teams in the NCAA. (Really hoping it's Tech of course)

Going to Alaska was awesome. I can't wait for the next 2 weekend back to back on the schedule as we'll be back. Hopefully with more! And I'm looking forward to seeing perhaps BG or Ferris next year.

Having all the UP teams together is great. Even though Northern sucks and sucks hard.

It's a different league, that's for sure. I'd have still liked the old teams to be there, but this hasn't turned out so bad.

The travel is a bit of a downer. During this weekend's BSU series, someone mentioned that this was now our closest conference opponent geographically. Compare that to last year when SCSU, UM, UMD, and UNO were all closer than BSU, and NoDak was equally close. That's made it really hard to go see a road game. But the tight conference standings, having the Alaska and UP teams together, and the conference video package are really cool things. As for attendance, there hasn't been any real dropoff except (and this is a pretty big but), no Gopher or NoDak games means no SRO games. But we've certainly drawn as well for Ferris or BGSU as we did last year for Denver or Wisconsin.

I love hearing the school where 4 hours used to be a long trip cry. CCHA travel for NMU: LSSU 3 hr, Ferris 6, Mich St 7 1/2, Mich 8, WMich 8 1/2, Notre Dame & BG 9 OSU 11, Miami 12 UNO 14. Welcome to our world.

No one is crying, I'm just saddened by the fact that I haven't attended as many games as I'd like and its because I'm not really close to any of them anymore. We accept that fact, someone just brought up not missing the old WCHA. purpleinnebraska and I just miss the old WCHA because it was way easier to see your team play. A major reason I chose MSP as my home was because it was so close to so many WCHA schools.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

I think the WCHA is 7-5-2 against the ECAC.

UAA and UA_ both beat Denver, and UAA beat Air Force, Quinnipiac and Wisconsin. I haven't kept track of how well other WCHA schools have done non-conference.

I surely missed the Minnesotas and Wisconsins when we left the WCHA. It's also fun starting new rivalries as well. The fans in Bemidji and Mankato and Anchorage have been terrific. Whatever the travel situations may be, and they aren't great for going to road games, I think we've got a good league and hope fans go and make the league tourney a great event!
