The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

No one is crying, I'm just saddened by the fact that I haven't attended as many games as I'd like and its because I'm not really close to any of them anymore. We accept that fact, someone just brought up not missing the old WCHA. purpleinnebraska and I just miss the old WCHA because it was way easier to see your team play. A major reason I chose MSP as my home was because it was so close to so many WCHA schools.
Well said. I like the nWCHA, so if I left a different impression it just means I didn't choose my words well. My only real regret is that it's unlikely that I make a conference road trip in the next couple years.

I see many growing pains for the WCHA. The Attendence is very low.
Much to my surprise, attendance is up considerably in Mankato. The place was nearly sold out for Ferris, and last weekend the Bemidji series had 3500 on Friday, and 4100 on Saturday.

Winning cures alot of problems. Not to mention the winning plus the close standings and good games.

In Mankato, the community has embraced the new coach and the fact that this team has some real talent. It's also a fairly big social event to head to the Verizon Center on a Friday or Saturday night. It's been a very good transition, outside of an atrocious road record, for the Mavericks. I was flat out wrong when I thought the nWCHA would drop attendance here. The community has bought into the hockey program, and is coming to watch the Mavs and not the Sioux, Gophs, etc.

With the new commitment to the program with the hiring of Hastings and the rink renovation, Minnesota State has positioned itself well to become a WCHA power and one of the league's "big" teams.

Time will tell if this trend continues, but year one has been a success for the Mavs.

I surely missed the Minnesotas and Wisconsins when we left the WCHA. It's also fun starting new rivalries as well. The fans in Bemidji and Mankato and Anchorage have been terrific. Whatever the travel situations may be, and they aren't great for going to road games, I think we've got a good league and hope fans go and make the league tourney a great event!

I agree. Hopefully the fans of the 4 teams in the Final Five travel well. I also hope the folks in Grand Rapids will support good quality hockey. It will be interesting to see what teams bring the most fans. I would expect Ferris St. to bring the most, if they get there.

I'm with you on this one. The thing that makes it even more impressive is there is no UND/MN bump that skews the averages. Yes, we're a bit behind last year, but nowhere near where I thought it would be. You're right, the city has bought into the program. I've always said that winning will bring people to the rink, not opponents. I have to admit, though, I didn't think the crowds would settle in as quickly as they have. I thought it would be a dip this year and slowly build up as the team kept winning. It makes me excited to see where the program is going in the future.

It was good to see that the town understood the importance of that Ferris State series.. It was packed with 4600 Maverick fans. I do think in the offseason Hastings has done an excellent job being involved in the community and trying to be engaged and encouraging people to come watch them play. I know anytime I see him he stops for a minute or two and talks with me, which is far more than I can say for Jutting.

Pastie Cup!

About time they do a tournament in the UP.

You could invite Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, MSU, OSU and PSU be the fourth team and rotate between Soo, Marquette, and Houghton.

Get the Big schools to come to the UP every year.

You do realize that MSU, OSU and PSU (and potentially WI as well) do nothing for that tourney, right? No one cares about them going up to the UP and it won't drive attendance. Add to that they will probably demand an ungodly deal for them to go and it doesn't make much sense

The big schools won't come to the UP unless the UP schools agree to two or three trips to their rinks.
