Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

Good point, although I was looking at the actual city of the school. Does Ferris State get much coverage in Grand Rapids?

Based on years of weekend newscasts up north, I do know that Ferris gets a modest amount of coverage from Traverse City, but I don't know about Grand Rapids (which FSU is considerably closer to).

Our scores get announced, occasional highlights depending on how good we are in the given season. The Grand Rapids paper covers us too. Ferris has a campus in Grand Rapids and tons of FSU graduates live there so in addition to being in the TV market there are other incentives. Like others have said, we get coverage in Cadillac and Traverse City too. But since Big Rapids doesn't have any TV channels itself, I would definitely consider us in the GR media market.

Makes sense.

Oxford isn't in Cincinnati...it's a dinky place about 40 miles out, in the middle of nowhere.
Only reason we're talking about this is that you gave the Cincinnati market to the NCHC, without putting BG in the Toledo market (or Ferris in the Grand Rapids market, which I'm a little fuzzy about). So no, the WCHA's biggest media markets are not Anchorage and Huntsville--more like Grand Rapids, Toledo, Huntsville, Anchorage...
But your point about the other NCHC markets is fair.

I can count on one hand the number of times college hockey has been mentioned since I moved to Traverse City (outside of my talks with Bemidji people), and those all were with my in-laws who are from the Soo... No one here cares about Ferris hockey.

We're consistently clocking around 1,000 fans a night. Our attendance will rise now that we have no more football competition for the rest of the year. We won't get any crossover traffic with the Huntsville Havoc (SPHL) playing around us (Thu/Sun) some weekends, and we certainly won't get any help this weekend (they play on Sunday).

We used to pull 2,000 to 2,500 in the 2000-2006 timeframe of playing D-I hockey at or above .500, and that takes into account the drain that football (HS on Friday, Roll Tide and War Eagle on Saturday) puts on us. I started an accounting / analysis of our attendance v. quality of team and UA/AU football interference in the offseason, but I never finished it, and I'm not sure where that file is right now. If I can find it, I'll get it back up and UAHStatman and I can crank on it during the muggy months during which we close our eyes and wish for hockey's return.

And as for the Huntsville press: We're largely ignored in comparison to the pro team. And we think one TV station would rather we had folded because we took nights away from their precious pro team (despite the fact we had been dealing with kowtowing to every incarnation of pro hockey in Huntsville for the past 20 years).

(I might be bitter about this.)

The funny thing is that the Havoc people were just as ****ed about the story as we were — as was the guy who was forced to do it. That's why everyone was so downcast for that story. 48 is terrible.

Tech Hockey Guide thought about continuing the WCHA poll but we didn't know where we'd get media members on some of these teams..

Jack Hittinger at Bemidji will be able to help run those people down. He's the guy that did the pre-season poll this season.

You're absolutely right in general. But 7&4 News still covers the Bulldogs and is more of a "Northern Michigan" TV station than just a Traverse City news channel. I know several Traverse City residents who have Ferris season tickets and we have a couple players from TC on the roster, including our leading scorer. There may not be broad interest, but there is definitely a subset of folks who pay attention. I think this is true for Grand Rapids as well.

Yeah, when I ran down for the BSU game, the only other Beaver fan there was from TC, and he said he had followed Thompson and VanWormer in HS. Not having TV, I just notice no one at work (mine or my wife's) nor in the paper seem to care. I'm sure there is a dedicated core of hockey fans in town - I just haven't found them yet...

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

I'm tinkering around with my model, which seems to be doing okay. The main thing to note is a schedule one: after this weekend, BG and Alaska have only six conference games left. The Falcons will likely drop from third in the standings. Ferris is off this weekend, is in first, and has two games in hand on Mankato (2nd) and Anchorage (4th) and four on BG (3rd). This weekend is huge for Mankato. The model says that the Mavs aren't sweep-quality, so they need to beat this silly model.

I haven't propagated the games out for the rest of the weeks — just Week 19. I've got walking pneumonia or something like it and will probably next resurface on Tuesday. :)

It looks to me that, even though they have fewer games, BGSU is close to locking up home ice. The issue is who will get the forth spot. NMU in the drivers seat here if you ask me, but given the games remaining and the evenness of the teams, I could see anyone making it.
I'm not big on your model there geoff. Look at the strength of schedule going forward and who is home vs away.

If you checked on it, Carpenter scored two goals for BG on friday but they lost. If you are Tech this is a huge weekend coming up at BG.

Also there was a very good interview last night by the NMU announcer, of Bruce Mcleod.

Not exactly, BGSU still has to travel to UAA. It could very well be very close there.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

For what it's worth for everyone, three of the four teams who get just one crack at taking four points off of UAH still have those games left (Alaska this weekend, Tech next weekend, Lake two weeks after that). If the Chargers are going to spoil a team un-ready for the pluckiness, there's plenty of chances left.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

I'm already preparing for the inevitable sweep of NMU by UAH on the final weekend of the season; where NMU finishes ninth just one point behind UAF who takes the final playoff spot. :p  It's bound to happen.
