Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

That's a fairly normal routing for coming from Fairbanks. The way some of these people book trips it would've been FAI-ANC-KIX-SZX-DXB-CGN-LHR-SNN-YQX-JFK-DFW-SFO-YVR-SEA-DEN-PDX-SDF-MSP-RFD-DET.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Last season the UAA Seawolves started travel on Thursday mornings.
Other than a real short Wednesday night, being up at 3 am or earlier on Thursday morning, at least kept them on an early to bed Thursday night.
This year you can't make the needed connections leaving Thursday morning.
The Seawolves have traveled Wednesday night this season. Ever tried going to class all day then travel all night and get your body and mind back in sync?
For the longer trips after the Holidays we'll travel on Tuesday.
Gives the guys a little more time to adjust to the change.
The costs in time and money go up.
No *****ing or complaining, just do what needs doing.
These guys are amazing.

They are amazing. It must be so difficult being a student athlete ... they deserve more respect than a certain ADN blogger shows them.

umm. dubai is not my idea of a good place to connect. I avoid the arab airlines like the plague. otherwise, heath row would be a nice stop for a bit. so would louisville. the others, not so much.

Duluth is 3 hours by car from houghton, 121 miles. then minny is 2 more 129 miles. so that's 5. I would bet you could drive it in less though.

try again, Duluth to Houghton is 216 miles and it takes a solid 3.5 hours by car. I could push it in my younger days I could pull it off in 5 in great weather. 6 is a far more typical number with a stop for gas/snack.

Houghton to Duluth is 216 miles, that's 4 hours by bus (that's what teams travel on). Stop for lunch:45 minutes. Duluth to the MSP Airport 158 miles: About 2 1/2 hours by bus. That's about 7:15. To make the MSP airport from Houghton in 5 hours, you have to average 75 MPH. Good luck doing that with a bus.

You expected it to stop?:)

I would hope that we would expect that we all know that our league has the worst travel of all six league and just STHU about it. This hope is apparently mis-placed.

Oh yay, we're complaining about travel in the WCHA again.

I really don't see much complaining about the travel here. I do see a lot of discussion and a few anecdotes and even a few suggestions. One thing some seem to miss is that travelling in a car or booking a flight for 2 people is vastly different than doing it on a bus or putting 25-30 people on a plane and having schedules and budgets to consider. Some ideas may look good on the surface, but when you when you dig a bit deeper, what seems easy can often be problematic. Each school does the best it can, and truly believe that Alaska travel will improve with teams doing their own booking instead of the host school doing it.

I know MTU travels out of MSP regularly now,I think its as much about giving the coaches a chance to catch additional games of recruits and potential recruits in MN HS hockey. Maybe that will change this year based on where they are flying, etc.

I would guess that if they flew to Alaska out of MSP before, they'd continue that. For Huntsville, either Green Bay or Marquette would be a viable option. What size planes are they sending out of Houghton a County? Is Chicago the only destination there?

Well ya got me on that one.I guess mapquest isn't that accurate after all. it is certainly not that attractive to drive.
I don't know if minny is served from mqt. I would guess it is. Does the team get ff miles for all those players? that might mitigate the cost a bit every so often. and I'd still try real hard to get the red eye home rather than waiting until sunday.

as far as I know Houghton is only served thru chicago by United express, and then with 50 seat rj's. two flights per day. At least mqt has 70 seaters. like I say, i go in and out of iron mountain, simply to get where I want to go at the time I want to get there.

You also have to go back to how much are you willing to spend in time, in order to save money. And not that much generally.

BTW huntsville is served directly from Detroit, (and I'm pretty sure from chicago too), which makes flying from imt relatively easy.

First, you can fly from Marquette to MSP. Second, only the ****ty regional jets fly into Houghton, but I think the airport is capable of the larger ones, United just doesn't fly them there. It was BS when United got the federal bid to service Houghton/Hancock, instead of Delta. Service was much better when you could fly Delta to MSP, and I believe Delta flew the 70 seaters in there too.

Marquette has service to Detroit on Delta and Chicago on American. MSP service ended a couple years ago. NMU will fly to Huntsville from MQT-ORD-HSV. For Anchorage, they go from Green Bay.

Delta didn't want it any more. they gave it to united.

I totally agree minny was a lot better. the only way to get from houghton to detroit now is either go in the afternoon, or go to iron mountain. If I am coming up for the games on friday, I go to imt, and rent a car. otherwise I get there around 7 15 pm.

I brought up hockey on this thread last week, but no one was interested.:) As I said then, it looks to me like a whole lot of real good teams in this league and the press saying that there are no good teams is not accurate. I think wisconsin took lake state for granted and paid the price. I also agree with shirtless, way too early to anoint anyone. But that bemidji- bgsu series the last week of the season could be really big.

Delta submitted a bid the last time around, it was just higher than United's but it provided better service.

edit: here are details: http://www.cityofhancock.com/minutes/minutes_55.pdf
Hancock, put in a preference to go with a Delta bid that was ignored.

Really: DELTA MQT to MSP? No you can't, unless you go thru Detroit. I've flown out of MQT twice in the last six weeks. Stood right there at the counter that lists Deltas departures from MQT at 6:28 am to Detroit and one at 5:25 pm to Detroit. There are no MSP departures from Marquette. You can even get airman Cecil OMalley to check the tower logs Col. BigBlue Jessup. There is no direct MQT-MSP flight. http://www.sawyerairport.com/departures_and_arrivals.html

Perhaps it's been awhile since bb_dl flew out of MQT? I mean, it was only a few years ago that United to ORD service replaced Delta to MSP service at CMX. And I know bb_dl graduated well before that.
