Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Speaking of crazy airline stuff, I was looking at a vacation to St. Maarten's and the cheapest flight was St. Maarten's-La Guardia-LAX-MSP...whaTF

However you have to get there, it is worth the trip. St Maarten/St Martin is a fabulous place.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

You have to decide as you make these travel arrangements, how much money your time is worth. For instance, you can fly from Detroit to West Palm direct, but thru ny is cheaper. Of course it takes 3 hours longer and you risk losing your bag, having a mechanical breakdown, being late is twice is likely, etc., all for maybe 50 dollars per ticket. It's not worth it to me.
I know a guy who flew to Chicago midway with his family of four, and was going to get the bus to O'hare for his vacation charter to Hawaii. Well the flight to midway broke, he was late and everyone missed the charter. all for 200 bucks. He would have used half of that buying transportation in the city to O'hare anyway.

As far as a trip to Alaska. One good way would be to bus to minny, and take the flight from there. Avoiding the gouging that they do on the regional connections. Another suggestion is to fly on two flights and avoid using more than 25 seats. Airlines do not like to have too much of the seat inventory go to one customer. third, if you could as a league, arrange for tickets to Alaska, every week, you might get a pretty good deal on the price. I would certainly look into flying out of iron mountain at times too.

With the cost a transportation such a big factor now days, maybe the league should investigate doing the arrangements for some of these.

also, going to Huntsville. It's loads cheaper to fly into Nashville or Birmingham than to Huntsville. Unless you are going to charter, which I recommend anyway. It's two hours on the bus from BHM or Three from Nashville.

Interesting. My flight MQT-BHM in September was more expensive than my flight to Huntsville in March.

It sure sounds like some schools need to hire people that have an idea of how to book travel arrangements....some individuals too. And I'm not ripping the people stuck with crazy connections because of airline idiocy, and connecting you halfway across the country in the wrong direction.

Reminds me of Dumb and Dumber... "You drove a sixth of the way across the country in the wrong direction!"

Yeah surprisingly I never hear of the Alaska schools having to endure crazy long travels with weird connections.

Is bussing to Minny really that much cheaper when you consider the cost of the bus trip, an extra night in a hotel and an extra days meals, then getting back to MSP, another bus ride home and not getting back home until 9 1/2-10 hours later? The problem with two flights from the small markets is that those on the later flights may be stuck with an overnight layover. There are no real easy options anywhere. I know my FAI-SEA-DFW-ORD-MQT route was odd, but the only difference had I been able to go SEA-ORD direct would've meant a six hour layover at OHare. At that point, it's easier to sleep on a plane!

Bussing to minny is at the outer extreme of rational. it does take 4 or 5 hours, but it takes 3 or 4 to fly, when you consider how early you have to leave for the airport and how long you might have to wait for a connection.

coming home i'd be doing everything I could possibly do to make the red eye. saves all those meals and a ton of time. if you take the red eye you get to minny early sunday morning, and all the flights for the day are available. so you get home mid day sunday, instead of real late or even monday.

Who in the WCHA (besides Bemidji or Mankato) can bus to Minny in 4-5 hours? Tech is about 7-7 1/2 when you add a meal stop and NMU 8-8 1/2.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Last season the UAA Seawolves started travel on Thursday mornings.
Other than a real short Wednesday night, being up at 3 am or earlier on Thursday morning, at least kept them on an early to bed Thursday night.
This year you can't make the needed connections leaving Thursday morning.
The Seawolves have traveled Wednesday night this season. Ever tried going to class all day then travel all night and get your body and mind back in sync?
For the longer trips after the Holidays we'll travel on Tuesday.
Gives the guys a little more time to adjust to the change.
The costs in time and money go up.
No *****ing or complaining, just do what needs doing.
These guys are amazing.

Maybe some teams should move their schools to better cities.

Definitely one of your better posts. If you moved the UAA to Milwaukee it would be so much easier for everyone. Then they could move Fairbanks to Green Bay then there would be two Wisconsin schools in between the 2 Minnesota and four Michigan schools and add two more viable cities to the league tourney rotation. Or how about moving one to Birmingham. Then we could make two Alabama trips instead of two Alaska trips and some could do the two weekend double and get in a little January golf. Brilliant idea!

UAF left on the red eye Tuesday night for Lake Superior State. Took the better part of 24 hours to get there, I believe the route was FAI-ANC-ORD-Detroit, and a long bus ride from Detroit to Sault Ste Marie.

By bus Detroit Metro to the Soo is around six hours.

That's a fairly normal routing for coming from Fairbanks. The way some of these people book trips it would've been FAI-ANC-KIX-SZX-DXB-CGN-LHR-SNN-YQX-JFK-DFW-SFO-YVR-SEA-DEN-PDX-SDF-MSP-RFD-DET.

(Bonus points to those who can name every airport for those codes)

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Even getting to Anchorage can be tricky. Every time we go it ends up being…
SEA-WVS-SUK-THE-BIG-ONE :)

Any bonus points?
