Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Why do people get hung up on this? I'm replying to moose but this is more about Freddie. The PWR is a ranking system that mirrors the NCAA selection criteria used at the end of the regular season to determine the NCAA field. That doesn't mean the ranking system can't be used to rank teams at some other point of the season. As long as games have been played, the PWR can be used to rank teams but the more games that are played, the more accurate the rankings become. This whole notion that the PWR don't exist until the end of the season or this early in the season is silly. USCHO might choose not to publish the PWR yet but that doesn't mean Siouxsports.com or CHN can't publish Pairwise rankings based on current results.

Since we love to talk travel ... ;) ... the boys are about to hop aboard a 20-hour ride to Marquette. This is our first bus trip of the year after flying to Northeastern and Anchorage. The boys will travel by bus to Notre Dame and then Bowling Green the next two weekends.

UAH stood for University of Away Hockey last year. :)

The online guide for this evening's WCHA games on AmeircaOne is as follows:

7:07pm EST - Minnesota State @ Bowling Green

7:07pm EST - Alabama-Huntsville @ Northern Michigan

7:07pm EST - Alaska-Fairbanks @ Ferris State

7:37pm CST - Lake Superior State @ Bemidji State

7:07pm AST - Michigan Tech @ Alaska-Anchorage (Will any of you Tech fans stay up and watch this in real time? Or, will you watch it later on VOD?)

We'll see if I'm ready to go to bed when the game starts or not. Need to get up early tomorrow for deer hunting so stayin gup to watch is probably a bad idea....

I've done it before, so yeah I probably will.

There's also a group that made the journey and will stay the entire week, going up to _airbanks next weekend.

No. Deer Hunting. And watch? I don't have a way to do that, I'd listen but I'll be sleeping.

I couldn't watch, but I listened, at least the first two periods.

I was worried about our officiating this year but it appears that Hockey East is much worse. Or maybe it's just when they play non conf games. Ours is really not too bad.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

I was really impressed with the Tommy Albindia and Jerod Moen this past weekend in the BSU/LSSU series. If it was a penalty at the beginning of the game, it was a penalty at the end of the game. It didn't matter if the teams were tied and there was under five minutes left.

All in all I think the officiating has been pretty dang good this year in the WCHA. In the games I have watched, I haven't really seen any calls that you can really be upset with.

I saw the clips of the calls that went against UND against Boston U. WOW, those were bad!

So were the ones against Mankato at Providence, and against Tech at Notre Dame. I've been to some big ten games and I'd say our officiating is as good as theirs. Certainly there are some questionable calls, still, not too bad.

Considering the mix of CCHA and WCHA referees that make up the NCHC, WCHA, and B1G and the hopping between leagues some are doing, the Western schools are going to be close to the same officiating for a few years until each league wants different focuses on enforcement.

I think the only complaint I could make was NMU at WMU weekend, where one of the linesmen looked to be a rookie who was lost. Missed every offside he stared at, then waved them okay with a sheepish "crap, stay cool" panicked look on his face.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

RPI rankings as of this morning have Ferris as a number one seed (third overall) and Lake State as a three seed (11th overall). BGSU is just outside the Tournament field sitting 17th.

Also of note, only one NCHC school is ranked currently. And half of the B1G would be in the tourney.

With the way the Nacho is going I could see the WCHA get 3 teams in the NCAA tournament.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Okay, so the ugly topic of attendance and ticket prices has been brought up over on my BeaverPond Message Board. Thought I would bring it over here, but it does look like BSU's prices are out of line when compared to everyone else:
---------------
I did a little digging and these number are from each school's official webstie. These are just the adult prices for reserved seating. Some offer youth tickets and general admission.

BSU: $25 to $40
Michigan Tech: $17
Mankato: $16 to $32
Alaska: $15 to $19
Bowling Green: $15
Northern: $14 to $16
Ferris: $14
Anchorage: $13 to $18
Huntsville: $13
Lake Superior: $12

Average without BSU: $14.33 to $17.33

A couple of thoughts:
1. The Sanford Center is the newest arena in the league.
2. No one really knew for sure how the new WCHA would shake out, so the prices are comparable to last year.
3. You have to make Season Tickets look like a viable option. They did reduce those a bunch this year, down to $275 for 19 games, or just under $15 a game.

Do I have an answer, no. I have heard some season ticket holders are upset with the Family Four Pack being less expensive than their season tickets, plus the family gets hot dogs or pop corn. I haven't heard how the Flex Packages went over or have I priced them out to what they would be a game.

Some of that depends on who wins the conference title. If we have an unexpected winner, I could definitely see three of our teams going. Without that, I think league parity might limit it to two. I'd definitely rather have three though.

That is true but I'm basing this on the fact that we are likely to have an "unexpected" winner. I mean if you look at teams right now I don't think it'd be too surprising to see anybody win it, except maybe UAH.

Anyone who posts an awesome conference record (22 or more wins) could get an at-large. Niagara showed last year that you could even pull that off from the AHA. Otherwise, several teams (Kato, BSU, MTU, for starters) already shot themselves -and by Pairwise rules, the whole conference- in the foot.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

I checked ticket prices at a couple of other schools just to see. Michigan had tickets from 20 to 30. BU had tickets from 15 to 30.
So i'd say 20 - 25 is not out of line depending. Anything under 20 is a bargain it appears.

I think the point is that $25 in Boston is a bargain, but it's probably a bit out of line in an area like Bemidji. Most of the league appears to be in the mid-to-high teens, perhaps charging a few extra bucks for a 'premium game' like Tech does for NMU, Carny, and B1G opponents. Sanford Center may be a nice, new building, but that's not a valid justification to the average local yokel to get him to pay $25/seat to watch the Beavers play a bunch of teams from outside MN that he's never heard of, unless BSU is on a serious winning streak. He'll just stay home and maybe catch the game on public access.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

I think that most teams have their prices set right... There isn't a place where tickets are in the "Hell No!" category... With most teams here in the WCHA, winning is going to be key... Just win, and the rest should take care of itself...
