NMU will make two trips to Alaska as well. Fairbanks in December, Anchorage in late January.

That sucks... We'd really like to do the drive in the week in between, but I can certainly respect the weather. :)

I've been told that the Anchorage to Fairbanks train trip is a great experience.

Plus I would think that most rental cars would have serious trouble on the highway if any kind of weather sets in.

Sounds like it's settled then. :) Fly up and train back on Sunday to fly out of Anchorage back home.

This too. Most rental car companies don't put snow tires on rental cars, so whatever you're driving will likely have a crappy set of dealer summer tires on it.

I usually rent from Hertz whenever I go to Fairbanks, and in the winter they only charge a few extra dollars per day to rent a mid-size SUV with 4WD, as opposed to a standard full size car. It's worth the extra coin, IMO.

Fly to Anchorage.
Buy a nice, new full-sized SUV.
Drive to Fairbanks.
When you're done, park it in a rough neighborhood with the keys in it.
Fly home.
Collect insurance.
Write off the deductible as a casualty/theft loss.

Problem solved.

I would make the drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Yeah, you may have weather issues, but you have a whole week to get there. Look at the forcast, figure out which days would be best and make the drive. When I was up there we drove up to Talkeetna (obviously not the same as going all the way to Fairbanks) with no problems, just make sure you get an SUV for a rental car, and be smart about it and you'll be fine. It is a very scenic drive, and I think you'll want to stop several places for pictures, and stop in towns like Talkeetna (get a few beers at the Denali Brewing Company). If it were me, I'd keep a flexible schedule, and drive to Fairbanks over 2 days when the weather looks best sometime during the week, and then turn in the car in Fairbanks (1-way rental), and take the train back to Anchorage on Sunday. I just really think you're missing out on a lot of scenery if don't drive, yeah the train goes through there too, but trains don't stop for pictures, or stop at small restaurants or local shops on the way.

The train was one of the best things my friends and I did on our trip to Fairbanks a few years ago (2nd only to a dog sledding school). Went to games in Fairbanks Fri, Sat, took the train to Anchorage Sunday and flew out of Anchorage Monday. I think there were maybe 7 people on the train in Fairbanks. Got to talk to the conductor, spent most of the time hanging out in the dining car with the cook. The train takes all day, so bring a deck of cards, a good book or similar. Because of the limited number of people on the train, they actually did stop for pictures, wildlife if they saw it, etc. It was a great experience, and I imagine very different from the train ride in the summer.

My experience is the same. In 2004 my wife and I flew to Fairbanks (via Anchorage) for BG vs. UAF (then) and took the train back to Anchorage Sunday. We didn't see any wildlife, but the train stopped on a trestle where we had a great view of Denali; the sky was crystal clear. The cook put things on hold for awhile while she prepared lunch for another train's crew. The lunch was delivered without our train's stopping. Along certain parts of the route, the train can be flagged to stop. As I understood it, the train is the only transportation connection to the rest of the world for some communities in winter. Do it. MSU sure looks like a club on the rise. They might be one of the favorites next year to win the nWCHA

The WCHA is still planning on announcing Grand Rapids as the 2014 Championship host during Final Five weekend, right?

And it's not really a funeral. Now the CCHA is holding a funeral, but the WCHA is just evolving. They really need to stress that they're continuing on.
