The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

fan picks are fine if you enjoy homerism.

but last year's wcha media picks...somebody gave a first-place vote to Bemidji. another guy last year picked UAH for ninth.
and this year buccigross has Ferris at #9 nationally, no sign of Mankato. whaaaat?
I'll go with the coaches, and then maybe not even. everybody else is doing E.

Does Buccigross have Ferris #9 in the WCHA or #9 nationally? If Ferris is #9 nationally, what is so wrong with that? Considering USCHO hasn't even done their first poll yet, where would you expect Minnesota St to be in a poll that doesn't yet exist. In last year's WCHA preseason polls, the media was more accurate than the coaches.

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

Dave, he said FSU 9th Nationally. Think he was more upset that MSU-M wasn't also picked top 10.

As for Bucci, here was his Top 10 as of September 19, 2013:
https://twitter.com/Buccigross/status/380717954125795328
BucciMane #cawlidgehawkey Top 10
1-Miami
2-Providence
3-N Dakota
4-Wisconsin
5-U Lowell
6-N Dame
7-Minnesota St
8-BC
9-Minnesota
#10-RPI

Final RPI rankings per NCAA
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/icehockey-men/d1
1 Minnesota
2 Boston College
3 Union
4 Wisconsin
5 Ferris State
6 UMass Lowell
7 Quinnipiac
8 Notre Same
9 St Cloud State
10 MSU-Mankato

Bucci went 6/10, and nailed Wisconsin perfectly. He missed picking the National Champions (Union), Ferris State, Quinnipiac, and St, Clood.

And honestly, after the media/coaches polls, these stupid polls are worthless (in part because of the idiots going "let's vote for an Ivy school to lead the nation even though they don't play their first game for another month.") The only schools that care about a superscript number next to their name are the silly football schools who know that's the only way to get their fan base to notice them.

*edit* I'd rather they use a premature PWR top 10 instead of some of these "media" picks. By December/January, at least the PWR starts shaking out into actual useful data. Currently in January, some moron still keeps giving RIT and Air Force #1 overall, and thinks Minnesota, Michigan, BC, and BU are locks for the top four spots.

Davyd83, don't you get it? You guys in the media are incompetent, lazy fools and the Joe fan in the 13th row who could never do your jobs or survive your schedules are far superior beings. And if one voted for Bemidji, then you all voted for Bemidji! Got it? :😜 And don't dare ever express critical thought about fans. They are far superior!

I wonder what manurespreader thinks of the picks that I already submitted and posted in this thread.

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

I think this year's conference race will be a lot like last year. Places 3-9 are all up in the air making that last month of the season exciting for all of us number crunchers. A couple of injuries, an off game or two in the middle of the season is all that could be the difference between making the playoffs as a #3 seed or missing the playoffs at #9.

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

I'd guess that the aggregated media poll will look something like this (I'm assuming there will be 25 voters again):

1. MSUM (17)
2. FSU (8)
3. BGSU
4. UAA
5. UAF
6. MTU
7. NMU
8. BSU
9. LSSU
10. UAH

Only thing I'm not confident in is the order of that 4-7 logjam.

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

You're right I don't know a single member of the media. Unless you count geoff here and he doesn't like me, as I say bad things about alabama.( which they deserve for sure) so no, not a one, but I do research, and I read everything I can about the teams before I guess. Just like you, though yes I do have a job, and I do go to it unlike media guys who get paid to go to sports events, and wake up at noon.

If you've got things all figured out, then how come you're still doing your job like some sucker?

you are certainly entitled to your opinion of course. no big deal.

Well it would be great if I could just go to hockey games and get paid, but I haven't figured out how to do that, and if I went to too many BGSU games i'd be deaf anyway.

If my job was to be at work at night... I'm not working at 8 am. How's that their fault? ;)

Who said it was their fault? I do think though that many of our media guys do other stuff and work very hard,( just like everyone else does) it's just real easy to give them a hard time. Which they deserve of course.

Yeah, you never have any biases with the media or coaches. :)

How can none of you asshats have the gophers in your polls? #westernbias

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

As a few people have already pointed out we actually did a pretty good job last season guessing the standings. In fact, we were more accurate than the coaches were last year:

Media Preseason Poll
1) Minnesota State (22)
2) Ferris State (2)
3) Alaska*
4) BGSU*
5) Michigan Tech*
6) Northern Michigan
7) LSSU
8) Bemidji State*
9) Alaska-Anchorage
10) Alabama-Huntsville*

Correct Placings: 5

Coaches Preseason Poll
1) Minnesota State (9)
2) Ferris State
3) Michigan Tech
4) Bowling Green*
5) Alaska
6) Northern Michigan
7) Bemidji State
8) LSSU
9) Alaska-Anchorage
10) Alabama-Huntsville*

Correct Placings: 2

End of Season Standings
1) Ferris State
2) Minnesota State
3) Alaska
4) BGSU
5) Michigan Tech
6) Alaska-Anchorage
7) Northern Michigan
8) Bemidji State
9) LSSU
10) Alabama-Huntsville

Q) What do members of the media have in common with hockey coaches and bartenders?
A) They all have jobs where people who could never do their job critique them and tell them how they should do their jobs.

yep, biases are everywhere. but unlike homers, coaches can't vote for their own teams.

Some of the media bias is inherent. See a team 36 times and you're likely to be far more familiar with those players. See Mankato 4x and you are more familiar with those guys than the ones from Bowling Green that you saw twice last October.

Re: The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

In my opinion if someone had predicted the following, you got them "correct:"

1-2 Ferris and Mankato
3-7 Everyone else
8-9 BSU and LSSU
10 UAH

Within those groupings, the standings were so tight, one point would have been a change of at least one position in the standings. I don't expect anyone to predict standings separated by one point. That's a D-man falling down and giving up a breakaway, a bad call by a ref, a funny puck bounce, etc. One point in the standings above or below a team does not make that team better or worse.

Last year in the WCHA we had two teams that were generally better than most of the others and one that really struggled. Then you had five teams that were pretty much equal and another three that were nearly their equal as well. MTU is a great example - with one more point they could have finished 3rd but with one less point they could have finished 6th. When one point means a change of four positions in the standings, predicting where MTU would finish exactly doesn't really mean that much.

If you had all 10 teams in the right groups, you went 10 for 10 in my opinion - score yourself a 100.
