The New WCHA, 2014 Offseason: See-ya, Bruce

They probably got out their Rand McNally road atlas and showed him how far it is from Bemidji to Huntsville too.

I hope Bruce M. takes Bill R. on this trip and tell him stories about the Hockey Capital of the South.

Also when they get to Huntsville they stop at the rink show Bill R. the five National championship banners that UAH Chargers have achieved.

I'm so glad PP hasn't been banned. I'm enjoying his attempts at covering his *** and saving himself. Consider it the offseason entertainment, if you will.

If UAA and UAF were so self-sufficient, why did they shackle themselves to this seemingly low revenue and backward thinking WCHA? .

They knew the WCHA had sixty or more years of tradition and the oldest running league in the nation. Stability.

The other league will fight amongst themselves and form yet another league. The WCHA has stability and a real trophy.

As we all know the WCHA is here forever.

I remember Todd when he was playing for Tallahassee. There's a guy who worked his tail off and exceeded his talent!

Jack Hittinger of the Bemidji Pioneer got to talk to both WCHA commissioners yesterday. Something of note:

The men's league last year started a new streaming service through AmericaOne. Robertson said the streaming service was successful but needed a bigger marketing push -- which is something currently being discussed.

"We have several alliances in particular we're working on," he said. "I think media outlets are going to want it. The WCHA has to do a good job of promoting it. But we need to get it out there better, make sure people know they can buy it."

Looks like AmericaONE will be back for a second season.

I'd sign up in a heartbeat if I could get it to stream to the AppleTV okay. Tried to Airplay it last year and it would lag and crash on the iPad. For the few seconds it did work, it looked amazing.

I still watched a game or two on the laptop but I'd rather have it on the TV.

You can get it to work with chromecast with a few work arounds.

I had the same Apple TV issues.

Bruce still doesn't get it. He can't see the dollar signs involved.

I sort of disagree. I think he could see it. I just don't think he knew what he could do about it. I think he looked at all the options, decided he didn't want to force anyone to leave in order to "save" the WCHA, figured a 17 team conference was unworkable, and then didn't know what his next move was. So Denver made the next move. It's easy (and somewhat accurate) to be critical of how he handled it, but I think he knew things were breaking in the direction of haves/have nots, and he really didn't want to play that game. The problem, of course, is that by not playing that game, the game still got played, just without him in it.

So in other words he was in over his head.

As an outsider to the WCHA, it seemed that the revenue sharing was the big contention with NoDak, Denver, and the like. Weren't they the ones unhappy about how they drew such fantastic attendance numbers to drive up revenue, only to see that money "p*ssed away" on flights to Anchorage, and "hours" bussing to Houghton... Two teams that benefitted from long years of mediocrite and a healthy Final Five check for doing nothing?

Maybe Bruce should have worked to make it more percentage based. Maybe he could have worked out the issues with the Universities. And maybe he did those things. But all we're told is that "Bruce stuck up for the small schools and we didn't like it," by the NCHC schools and "Bruce knew there was a big fracture, but let it happen," by the remaining schools. Dam<!-->ned it you do, Dam<!-->ned if you don't.

I at least give Bruce credit for captaining the ship through troubled waters... Not knowing if it would make it to shore or sink in the middle of the night. Tom Anastos couldn't have pushed women and children aside quick enough to jump aboard the life raft floating by him.

Was Bruce the right guy for the New WCHA? Maybe, maybe not; but he certainly was a calming presence needed in the middle of this sh*tstorm.

My only wish is for the financial wellbeing of all the WCHA schools. May there be no more deaths to programs like UIC, Findley, Wayne State, or last second stay of executions like UAH. Only growth.

The revenue sharing issue is a **** shame. Take a look at the SEC, which is generally considered the best NCAA conference in the country. The SEC has one main theme...every member is equal, and every member receives an equal share. They've figured out that the sum of the conference is greater than the individual parts. It's unfortunate that college hockey is trending the other direction.

As for Bruce, I wish him well. His conference opened the door to my school when we otherwise would have been left holding our collective dick out in the cold. And I'm excited to see what the new leadership can bring.

Yes. That's why I said I only sort of disagreed with FTB&G. I think Bruce could see what the problem was. He just didn't see a way to reach a conclusion that he could live with. To borrow from The Godfather, there are wartime consiglieres and peacetime consiglieres. Bruce was a good peacetime consigliere, but wasn't able to manage things through when the war broke out.
