Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)
Welcome, UAH. Stoked to have them aboard.
Welcome, UAH. Stoked to have them aboard.
I second that!Welcome, UAH. Stoked to have them aboard.
Todd D. Milewski said:McLeod, on the league’s discussions:
“I really didn’t have a good handle on what was going to happen prior to [the meeting]. I was quite surprised how the conversation went in a positive way right from the get-go. There was very little opposition. I was a little bit surprised at that.”
while I dont disagree with Bruce being replaced, some of it might have been how good of a job UAH did in presenting itself to the WCHA...who knows.A telling quote from this USCHO Extra special article:
If Bruce is that far out of touch, then finding his replacement should be among the top action items on the nWCHA's list going into the next two offseasons.
How would he know how it would go, not having seen the UAH proposal in advance. Brophy and Altenkirch weren't tipping their hand other than to say they felt the members would like the proposal. And even if he did have an inkling, it would be rather unwise to tip his hand to the media as well. For instance, to say, "I feel good about their chances," and not have it pass would look pretty silly. I like the way he handled it. He stayed on safe middle ground.A telling quote from this USCHO Extra special article:

My guess is that it was less about the "quality" of UAH's presentation, and more about the potential responses from the rest of the league. Since the elapsed time between presentation and vote was hours instead of days or weeks, I suspect the other members already had their minds made up. Made up to the point of voting one way under certain circumstances, and voting another way under others. And McLeod didn't know what those parameters were for the various voters.
He's the definition of incompetant and should have been fired a year ago. He's the commissioner of the conference, and he apparently didn't at least have his ear to the ground on this issue. It seems he's learned nothing from the NCHC split, during which he appeared equally clueless, confused, and blindsided. He's content to sit in his office on DU's campus and let everyone else figure out solutions to the new WCHA's problems.
You sniff alot of glue, don't you?Regardless of how UAH presented itself it has no business being in the WCHA.. Financially it makes no sense. We already had to commit to having the Alaska Teams playing each other first round of the playoffs because of financial reasons, the travel costs are very worry some from a majority of WCHA members. Now they go ahead and add Huntsville. I dont get it. Since when is it the WCHA's responsibility to save a program?? The 5 year out look for the WCHA is not a very bright one financially. The conference tournament will be an absolute joke. You wanna know what a dead hockey arena sounds like go to the 2014 WCHA conference tournament.
Why don't you take a look at their history and see how much they averaged when they were in a conference, had rivalries and regular home series.Yeah.. I can't wait to see the UAH fans flood into the conference tournament.. If or when they make it at all. And i can't wait to see all the Nanook and Seawolve jersey's flood into the conference tournament as well.. UAH averages just around 1,500 fans.. WOW!!! What a great product the WCHA has just picked up..
A little bit on the travel subsidy:

WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod said UAH will be paying a similar subsidy to what was worked out for both UAF and UAA recently, which he said is less complicated for the other seven schools and more fair for the three outlying universities.
"All we're trying to do ... is not have it cost anymore than the highest cost trip for anyone in the lower 48," McLeod said.
"Rather than buying X-number of tickets and giving you this and giving you that, we agreed on a firm number and that's the check that Alaska will write to the visiting schools. It's a different approach than in the past, but I think it's much, much more fair and what we're going to do is apply that same formula to Huntsville."
Meaning if Bowling Green State is the most expensive trip for Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech University, then neither would pay more than that sum to visit Huntsville, Ala., Fairbanks, Alaska, and Anchorage, Alaska.
"We used the same premise and we used the same model and came up with a number everyone was pleased with," UAH athletic director E. J. Brophy said from the convention in Dallas.
"The number is an attractive number. It was unanimously agreed upon, a range. Everybody was very happy with that number and that got us over the hurdle. From then on, it was smooth sailing."
