I, for one, hope the return of the "five games in seven days" trips to Alaska return for the Chargers.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Now that we know the entire new conference makeup, assuming UAH competes in it as soon as next season, as speculated, I wonder what the order of finish will be NEXT season in the nWCHA.

I kinda like Mankato or Ferris State to win the MacNaughton next season. Young, good teams, won't lose a lot of seniors, quality coaches.

Whatever cream rises to the top in the nWCHA, it will be an interesting season next year.

There is a side of me that wishes we'd stayed in the nWCHA. I guess it's because we have more affinity with a lot of the teams that will be in that league next season, having come over from the CCHA than we do with any NCHC teams (other than Western Michigan and Miami).

To wit. Most games played all time against various opponents in UNO history:

Alaska Fairbanks 50
Michigan 36
Bowling Green 35
Northern Michigan 34

etc., etc., etc. They are all current CCHA teams for quite a ways farther on down that list.

I mean, we have played Colorado College a grand total of 9 times, ever. We have little history with any of the NCHC teams except our former CCHA brethren who are coming over and becoming our conference mates, again.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

A telling quote from this USCHO Extra special article:

Todd D. Milewski said:
McLeod, on the league’s discussions:

“I really didn’t have a good handle on what was going to happen prior to [the meeting]. I was quite surprised how the conversation went in a positive way right from the get-go. There was very little opposition. I was a little bit surprised at that.”

If Bruce is that far out of touch, then finding his replacement should be among the top action items on the nWCHA's list going into the next two offseasons.

while I dont disagree with Bruce being replaced, some of it might have been how good of a job UAH did in presenting itself to the WCHA...who knows.

How would he know how it would go, not having seen the UAH proposal in advance. Brophy and Altenkirch weren't tipping their hand other than to say they felt the members would like the proposal. And even if he did have an inkling, it would be rather unwise to tip his hand to the media as well. For instance, to say, "I feel good about their chances," and not have it pass would look pretty silly. I like the way he handled it. He stayed on safe middle ground.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

My guess is that it was less about the "quality" of UAH's presentation, and more about the potential responses from the rest of the league. Since the elapsed time between presentation and vote was hours instead of days or weeks, I suspect the other members already had their minds made up. Made up to the point of voting one way under certain circumstances, and voting another way under others. And McLeod didn't know what those parameters were for the various voters.

I think it speaks more to the work the UAH staff (Drs Altenkirch and Brophy) did in their individual conversations with thier counterparts at the member schools leading up to the official group presentation than anything else. Obviously in those conversations they had set the foundation for what value UAH brought to the table and they had a clear idea of what each school'c concerns were. They were then able to go back and assemble a proposal (fairly comprehensive from what I hear) that addressed those concerns and drive home what UAH brought to the league. Since McLeod not in on all those conversations nor proposal building effort he really didn't know what to expect.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

OK. My main point was that the other members had already made their minds up. I seriously doubt each of those 9 voters had the power to review the proposal and make the decision on their school's vote independently. I believe these types of decisions are typically made by committees and the speed of the decision yesterday indicates, to me, that those committees had already made their decisions.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

He's the commissioner of the conference, and he apparently didn't at least have his ear to the ground on this issue. It seems he's learned nothing from the NCHC split, during which he appeared equally clueless, confused, and blindsided. He's content to sit in his office on DU's campus and let everyone else figure out solutions to the new WCHA's problems.

He's the definition of incompetant and should have been fired a year ago.

A little bit on the travel subsidy:

WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod said UAH will be paying a similar subsidy to what was worked out for both UAF and UAA recently, which he said is less complicated for the other seven schools and more fair for the three outlying universities.

"All we're trying to do ... is not have it cost anymore than the highest cost trip for anyone in the lower 48," McLeod said.

"Rather than buying X-number of tickets and giving you this and giving you that, we agreed on a firm number and that's the check that Alaska will write to the visiting schools. It's a different approach than in the past, but I think it's much, much more fair and what we're going to do is apply that same formula to Huntsville."

Meaning if Bowling Green State is the most expensive trip for Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech University, then neither would pay more than that sum to visit Huntsville, Ala., Fairbanks, Alaska, and Anchorage, Alaska.

"We used the same premise and we used the same model and came up with a number everyone was pleased with," UAH athletic director E. J. Brophy said from the convention in Dallas.

"The number is an attractive number. It was unanimously agreed upon, a range. Everybody was very happy with that number and that got us over the hurdle. From then on, it was smooth sailing."

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Regardless of how UAH presented itself it has no business being in the WCHA.. Financially it makes no sense. We already had to commit to having the Alaska Teams playing each other first round of the playoffs because of financial reasons, the travel costs are very worry some from a majority of WCHA members. Now they go ahead and add Huntsville. I dont get it. Since when is it the WCHA's responsibility to save a program?? The 5 year out look for the WCHA is not a very bright one financially. The conference tournament will be an absolute joke. You wanna know what a dead hockey arena sounds like go to the 2014 WCHA conference tournament.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Yeah.. I can't wait to see the UAH fans flood into the conference tournament.. If or when they make it at all. And i can't wait to see all the Nanook and Seawolve jersey's flood into the conference tournament as well.. UAH averages just around 1,500 fans.. WOW!!! What a great product the WCHA has just picked up..

Why don't you take a look at their history and see how much they averaged when they were in a conference, had rivalries and regular home series.

I certainly hope there's a reasonable and prudent clause attached to this... I foresee some of the schools who originally rejected them for the CCHA to take run-down busses to the farthest non-outlying location and then claim first class flight and five-star hotel for the UAH trip.
