The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

The Sioux ruined, I don't think so! They weren't the first ones to jump ship. It appears the Badgers & Gophers were the first ones, and I am dissapointed with UNO jumping ship as well. Did they not make a commitment to join the WCHA, only to leave quite early. I am glad that my home team Bemidji, kept their word, I doubt the U of Minnesota would ever play the Beavers again after the switch. But I am hopeful that UM Duluth and North Dakota would. As money gets tighter, it only makes sense to keep travel expenses at a minimum. But then again, that's whats wrong with our whole country, too much expense with no one accountable!

You're not paying attention very well. The Gophers and Badgers didn't have any choice. Penn State forced their hand. Minnesota for a while tried to fight it but they were not in any position to do so. The NaCHoC's had a choice. They chose to blow everything up. And so now we've had complete realignment with no regard for travel distance and an appreciation for the regionality of the sport. And it's going to cost us a 1/2 dozen teams before it's all said and done.

They had to jump ship so they could get that national TV contract with Versus. How's that progressing, anyway?

Quite well actually. And since the president of the NBC Sports Network is a Miami grad, the NCHC will do just fine.

"Soon, each conference in the country will announce its own television deal with NBC Sports Network (what Versus will turn into in January) to air college hockey games nationally."

I never wanted the WCHA to break up either. Once UND and DU left and started taking teams with them what choice does a program have? I guarantee if the NCHC came calling today BSU would be on that train as fast as they could.....

So, if each conference will have a TV deal, Denver and UND didn't need to leave the WCHA (which, apparently, will have a national TV deal).

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

I miss the good old days (last year) when this country's greatest self-confessed college hockey experts explained in detail why T.V. contracts and T.V. money would never have much influence upon college hockey. Remember?

Speaking for myself, I never anticipated anyone at NBC or another national network would be stupid enough to throw money at a sport whose ratings are off the charts tiny. After NBC takes an XFL-style financial bath then TV money will go back to being irrelevant.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

There's no downside to Versus broadcasting college hockey games Friday night in place of bull riding. None. Friday night in general isn't a great TV night to begin with.

Yes there is. A beer company pays to put their rodeo on the air. Are we going to have someone pay to put our sport on the air?

LOL. You don't understand that they actually have to MAKE MONEY at it do you?

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

The problem with trying to hang your hat on a national deal is NBC is it may be far less extensive than some of the NCHC proponents think (like much of the last handful of months, their big talk ends up laughably short of what reality ends up being). Clearly Hockey East and Notre Dame have more to sell when it comes to market size and attractiveness of its most well known teams. They'll bring in more money and give NBC more reason to put their games on TV. The NCHC is going to be sucking hind teat and they know it. :D

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Looks like I may have jumped the gun. Not only is the opinion that T.V. money is inconsequential to college hockey still alive and well, but so is denial that T.V. money has (let alone could) radically change college hockey - especially conferences. A reactionary world view is a particularly stubborn delusion.

The quest for TV money (no one has seen a dime yet) has changed college hockey. The lack of TV money (and rising travel costs) will eventually turn this back into a regional sport.

Turn it back into one? What did I miss?

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

I could see in 10 years (or less) some of the schools that jumped ship might realize

  • TV money is insignificant
  • travel costs are exorbitant
  • Revenue from the post-season tournament is severely lacking
  • they're sick and tired of having a losing record every year

As a result they will try to become more regional. I think the same thing eventually happens with football as teams like Texas A&M go from being ranked to having a losing conference record and only making a bowl every few years.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

So I take it with the NCHC staying at 8 teams we will have a completely balanced 28 game league schedule? I love the idea of playing every team in the conference 4 times, with a chance to play every team both home and away. This makes for great rivalries and also fun road trips near the end of the year when teams want payback for what happened earlier in the season. If they can somehow manage to schedule the games with a 14/14 split, so you play your whole conference in the first and second half of the year, I'll be even more happy.
