The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Why do you assume that? This really is new territory for college hockey. Granted, I don't remember ever seeing a college sporting event blacked out on purpose on Dish/DirecTV but the way I read this, there is likely to be blackouts on regional networks? What distinction are you seeing that this would not be the case? FCS cannot carry any NCHC college hockey games on a regional sports network or cannot have a specific contract with a school like they used to have with UND? UND is really the only team I've ever heard of having a contract with FCS...the rest of the games I've seen on those when I had them were from other Fox Sports Networks...like FSWI or FS Detroit...

Why do you assume I don't know what I'm talking about and that I'm just assuming there won't be blackouts?

There won't be blackouts on regional networks. Regional networks include ROOT Sports, Midco, FSWI, FSDetroit, FSMN, Altitude, NESN, and etc.

National networks other than CBSSN will not be able to air NCHC-hosted games, even if they are originally broadcasted from a regional network. National networks include NBCSN, FCS-A, FCS-C, FCS-P, NHL Network, ESPN and etc.

I think where the question lies is with this. If a Denver game in on Root Sports and I am not in the Denver Regional market as set up on DirecTV or Dish Network, but I do have the Sports Pack for that provider, will I be able to see the Root Sports broadcast? The way "Exclusive National Rights" is being debated, many are saying no, you have to be in that defined Regional market to get the broadcast.

Yes you will be able to watch the game outside of the Denver regional market. The "Exclusive National Rights" is this contract applies only to national networks. Not to regional networks that are aired nationally. For the third time, there will not be blackouts of regional games.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

The games can be on regional networks that are carried nationally. So someone with Dish in New York will be able to watch DU vs CC on Root Sports. The games can not be aired on national networks that just pick and choose games to do here and there, like FCS.

There are no black-out restrictions for regional networks.

That's a little better. Not as dire as it sounded.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

FYI, DU only had 6 home games on Root Sports last year and none were picked up by FCS. My carrier, Verizon FIOS, does not carry ROOT Sports, so I was not able to view them. They also had 3 home games on NBC Sports which won't happen again, 1 away game at CC on Altitude, 2 away games at Minny on BTN and FSN and 2 away games at UND on FCS. I don't even know if DU will have any games on Root Sports this year as the number of games has been declining yearly. No TV broadcast schedule for DU has been announced. The model they seem to be going forward with is having the vast majority of home games streamed live on Pioneer Vision. Last season 16 home games were available through live streaming. What I would like to see is if they could stream live the away games by picking up the opponent's live stream feed.

Im not saying you're wrong, I'm asking how you know? How is this different than FS Detroit being blacked out when the Tigers are on because I'm not in Michigan? I get that you're confident in your understanding of things but for the 3rd time...WHY is this different?

MLB blocks it out because they want you to buy the MLB package from your provider, same as the NHL and NBA do.

I know because I know what is in the contract. I haven't read it personally, but I have my info from several people who have.

And it is different because of what du78 said.

The reason MLB, NHL, NBA are blacked out are archaic territoy agreements from the 70s, they've just decided to continue using them well after they've served their purpose to force people to buy the packages now...

I hope for the fans' sake that cf is correct, but it's really hard to gather that from the info available. You would think if it were otherwise the article would have taken the time to spell that out.

I'm really trying to think if there is a comparable situation to this doomsday blackout stuff people are posting about. However, off the top of my head I don't know any deals like this one where blackout rules are in effect. You really only deal with blackouts with professional leagues and that is now because of subscription or attendance rules.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

NCHC fans are worried about TV blackouts? Ha! Laughable. This isn't the MLB or NHL.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

apparently Goon doesn't count?
Eric Burton is Goon? I did not see the mention of black outs in that article. I know that out of Region Sioux fans are getting screwed and I don't like the t.v. deal, but I'm regional and actually get 4 extra games.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Only two or three years ago a profusion of Cheetos greeted the suggestion that TV and TV revenues would play an increasingly important role in college hockey. Now posters regularly go off-topic to discuss the particulars of TV coverage of college hockey. Will the reactionaries counterattack, or have they accepted the evolution of the relationship between TV and college hockey?
