Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Here is an expose on the forming of the NCHC from the SCSU standpoint.

For those of you with a bit of time, I found it a fascinating read. Cudos to those for making this kind of info available:

http://www.sctimes.com/article/20111204/NEWS01/112040001/Emails-detail-hockey-shake-up
The article just briefly mentions Notre Dame, but didn't mention that ND was the key driver in forming the NCHC. The first "secret" meeting was held in Chicago Hilton and hosted by Notre Dame.

Notre Dame had also made several attempts over the years to form a Super Conference with the cream of the CCHA & WCHA.

Then the TV deal with NBC Sports Network landed in their lap and ND couldn't reach an agreement with the conference that they helped form. I've heard that the NCHC believes that Notre Dame will eventually leave Hockey East join the NCHC.

Just take them and UConn now. Or take them and leave UConn in AHA. I think I'm speaking for a majority of Hockey East fans when I say that we won't mind at all.

NCHC already passed on Notre Dame once by not willing to bend over backwards to meet their demands (or Notre Dame spurned the National...pick how you want to spin that). I can't imagine that the NCHC will bend over backwards in the near future, unless Notre Dame is willing to significantly alter their demands. Plus, I see Notre Dame in the B1G in the next 10-15 years anyway, so any move to the National would only be temporary.

UConn would be an interesting addition, but I don't think there is mutual interest on either side of that coin between UConn and the National.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Notre Dame leaving Hockey East would seem like a farfetched idea...but you would have said the same about our current conference affiliations.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

I will start by saying I don't think it will draw more than 10,000 a game and for that reason it will be lame. However, everybody saying the Target Center is so bad for hockey have obviously never seen a game in the Kohl Center. :D I agree TC is not great for hockey, but the site lines and crappy arena wouldn't matter if they could fill the place. I am sorry but a half empty arena is not going ot be any fun.

I've been to the Kohl center. It is much better than Target Center for hockey.

I get that a lot of people feel that Target Center is going to make some significant improvements to make it a suitable hockey venue. But it's going to take a lot. I guess I'm in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

He's right about them not drawing very well though.

I know. I was at the regional final last year. The rink was half full and 90% of the fans where North Dakota fans. On the plus side, UND beat Denver 6-1, and it was my 5 year old daughter's first (and last, I guess) Sioux game.

Knowing a diehard WI fan, and he used to post here and was somewhat respected (con1977), he even has said the sightlines are not the best.

TC and KC have similar issues. They are basketball arenas and are not set up properly for hockey. Which one is worse? Well, if you overlook all the red at KC it's probably a coin flip IMHO.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

It's true Target Center is less than great for hockey, but the pros of being in downtown Minneapolis in terms of both attendance and stuff to do far outway having a better venue in a different location. My only criticism is that they maybe should have tried to get the X every other year, like a couple people already mentioned. We'll all live and enjoy ourselves.

I would imagine it just makes sense that the league would partner with one venue or the other. I would imagine that the Target center would be pretty lukewarm if the league was only interested in playing there when the arena's top competitor, the X, wasn't available.

I'm also guessing that's the case, and meant to say something about that in the previous post. My main point is that, while I'd prefer the X, I like the location much better than any other realistic choice and the venue is almost secondary.

TC and KC have the same problems, but KC is also just a nicer, newer arena in general. Really, it's only major downside comes from the sight lines.

It is the best location. I am sorry but the X was just not a possibility yet. Maybe after a few years of showing you can draw at the TC then the X will put you in rotation but right now it is rather risky and the X does not want to lose the Big Ten tourny to Detroit for a tourny that may have a lot of trouble drawing enough. (The Big Ten overlords are a very ornery bunch)

TC is the best option, if it was a better arena it would actually be perfect. I think some (like the NCHC's Minister of Propaganda in this thread) are putting too much stock in how much better it will be for hockey after the renovations (there is only so much they can do to fix the issues without completely changing the arena) but I have watched games in worse venues. It is fine for a conference tourny...if any team starts bidding on Regionals for the TC though then problems will arise.

SCSU lost at least one and maybe two third place games that cost them an NCAA bid. If they never would ahve played the game they would have made the tourney. That said I would guess teams have won a third place game and earned a spot as well.

Do you know which years?

Do you know which years?
The year that sticks out to me is 1998, Leitza's senior year. We were in good shape going into the third place game, then lost to CC and dropped to 12th in the PWR. Princeton's upset win in the ECAC Championship knocked us out.
