The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Not a good idea. Consistency is critical. But I am wondering how things will go if these tourneys are competing with each other. If the Gophers are at the X, it certainly might not be pretty. I find it unlikely that either league would want to not have their tourney on the weekend before the NCAAs. I think Omaha would be a good location for the years that the Big 10 is in the cities. It's actually a slightly shorter average trip than MSP for the schools.

Gopher fans are never going to go to the NCHC tourney any way so it won't make a difference. I don't see how there are more than 10,000 people at any game even when the Big Ten is in Detroit.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Or is it THEIR own team there? The effect will be on the casual fan. They can't go to two games at once.

THAT was the error you decided to correct? I "doubt" you have a lot of experience proof-reading.

If tickets aren't too expensive and I have nothing better to do, like watch my fingernails grow... I'd definitely go check it out. Every other year at least.

But you are not a casual fan, you take the time to post on the internet about college hockey

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

So on the years when the B1G Hockey Tournament is at the X, how many NCHC fans will show up on Thursday for the B1G Hockey Tournament's 3v6 and 4v5 games? Don't lie, you know you all want to come cheer for Penn St. if the Gophers end up 3rd in the B1G. Thanks in advance for your support :D

Good point. I think they will promote the hell out of it to try and draw in those people. I hope they do at least. Casual fans don't know the joy of watching the Whioux choke at the end of the year. :p

We wait until the Big Show to do that. ;)

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Still say we should take the X in Big's off years. What're we afraid of losing Target Center to the WCHA? If we ever wanted to take it back we could by process of bidding.

I am guessing the X wanted a guarantee (in terms of ticket sales) the NCHC couldnt make.

The Target Center considers this found money since all they have at that point is the Wolves. They probably went down on one knee and promised the world!

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

No facts. But I'll bet MSP is the #1 city for alumn for the schools in the NCHC. Certainly the most likely place to relocate to for UMD, SCSU, UND alumn and maybe even UNO and Denver. So you've got geography, alumns, casual fans and recruiting all saying the cities are the best choice. And if you want to promote yourself as a top flight league, it doesn't hurt to put your championship in a major market.

Right. Many alum in the area. And keeping the tourney in the best recruiting market is a no brainer.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Bigger question is whether the new WCHA follows suit and comes to the cities. It has a larger contingent of Michigan schools but the best places once you start to head east for hosting are either small markets or still quite far from WCHA schools. That is until you get far into Michigan...and then you're pretty far east.

It will be interesting to see if all three conferences jockey over the twin cities with the state tournament during a couple of weekends in March. Alternatively, they might switch off with the Big Ten between Detroit and MSP.

Not sure how big of a role this played, but it certainly takes care of the paranoia that Twin Cities metro area kids would NOT go to NCHC schools. Having the tournament in Minneapolis will be a helpful recruiting tool.

I'll make sure that don't put any money into the St. Paul economy at that time. :)

The WCHA in Detroit would be an unmitigated disaster.

I dont think there was any real recruiting issue with the NCHC and the TC area because the teams have been known and seen for years. The Minnesota schools for sure would have no issues with it. (no more than they have already anyways)

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

CBS Sports Network, the Conference's national television partner, will televise the tournament's two semifinal games and the championship game. A third-place game also will be played at Target Center. The dates and times for the games of the NCHC Championship at Target Center will be announced at a later date.
I thought the current WCHA was happy to get rid of the third place game yet the NCHC is implementing it. Can't say I was ever a fan of it .

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

I think the WCHA would be better off rotating between the X and perhaps Milwaukee or Green Bay. They will be in a tough spot. The X may be too big of a venue for them. I hope not.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

At first, I wasn't a huge fan of the 3rd place game but the more I think of it, the more I think it will draw in fans.

Most out-of-state folk aren't going to make the long trek to the cities if their team is only guaranteed one game. However, if they know they'll play two (even if one is for lowly 3rd place) they would be more willing to come out to the games. The people that buy the package for all 4 games are likely to actually go to all 4 games. If they sell a 2nd day package, then that can increase attendance. They already have the arena rented out for that full 2nd day, so might as well play 2 games and make a little more money and let fans see their team twice.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Let's face it, the conference tournaments in all sports, are a complete cash grab to begin with. They have managed to legitimize them by awarding the auto-NCAA, which isn't too big of a deal, because for most leagues the regular season champion wont play their way out of the NCAAs because of a poor conference tournament (see Ferris St. this year). That being said, this makes the 3rd place game an even more pathetic attempt for revenue, because the game is essentially meaningless. It is about the equivalent of a game against the USNDP U18 team, it does not help your team to win. Lucia was asked if he would prefer to play tomorrow after the semi-final loss to UND this past March, and before the reported could even finish the sentence he was already saying no because he knew they would be playing for nothing. I believe the current WCHA dropped the 3rd place game for two reasons. First, I think they figured out that winning the game did not help the teams chances of making the NCAAs nor did a loss keep them from making the tournament. The second reason was I think they wanted to keep the name "Final Five" and when they added a 6th team and another play in game on Thursday it brought the total # of weekend games to 6, and by reducing the tournament to 5 games they could continue to call it the "Final Five" despite having 6 teams. I understand the point about the fans wanting to be assured two games before travelling, but for fans who want to buy the tournament packages every year no matter what teams are in it, they do not want to pay for or attend the 3rd place game.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

I think before the WCHA tournament UND was a near bubble team. After winning that tournament they ended up a #1 seed for the NC$$. I'm not sure If they had lost and ended up playing a 3rd place game and if winning it would have helped them seeding wise.
