While not part of the Grand Fork metro area, Fargo is only an hour south. I would guess that their are many Sioux fans who make the one hour drive north for games.

Doubtful. Name one. No self-respecting UND fans would live in Fargo.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Rumors had been swirling that they were going to announce that there would be an announcement to announce a future announcement...it was the right thing to do. :p:D:D
Who gives a sh** about the announcements, will refreshments be provided at each of these announcements?!? That's the tough question that needs answering!

So the variance is pretty small... and dang... we visit often.

The problem with including Fargo for this particular statistic, is that logically Miami fans would have to include Cincinnati. According to Google Maps, Cincinnati is only 33.5 miles from Oxford. This is purely a guess, but I would think that people who live in the Cincy metro area make up a higher % of fans at Miami games than people who live in the Fargo metro area (read: Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead) make up % wise at REA.

That's cause they keep finishing in the top 3 and you keep finishing in the bottom 3 so you get playoffs in Grand Forks. I bet the number of games in Houghton over that time frame is significantly less.

While probably true, that's alum. I'll be non-alum %s from the Fargo metro area vastly outnumber non-alum %s from Cincy.

I would guess the opposite. But then again I haven't lived in North Dakota and don't know the Fargo-Grand Forks city rivalry (as it pertains to fans of NDSU and UND). I assume there would be plenty of Fargo UND fans who travel to Grand Forks.

It could very well be. However, according to wikipedia, the population of Oxford is only 21ish thousand, and is made up of about 16k students. My guess would be that a significant number make their way from Cincy/Cincy suburbs to the games. Even if it is 1,000 tickets that is close to 1/3 of the seats in the arena. While there might be 2,500 people from Fargo metro that make their way to the Ralph, that is only about 1/5 of the arena.

Of course, these are all just SWAGs, and I have no real clue as to their accuracy, so you could very well be right. :)

Oh I'm aware of why we get to keep visiting the REA. :) What I find surprising is that the average attendance from the Gophers to Tech is only a 450 fan difference.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Lol, I can just imagine how NDSU fans would react to this post. They'd be appalled! :D

They'd have to be able to read for that to happen. And know what the word appalled means.

Well the 2 closest towns have only about 300 people in them. They might be adding E. Grand Forks to the Metro population, but that is a Minnesota city.

Metropolitan Statistical Areas are officially defined by county and the Grand Forks MSA includes Grand Forks County, ND and Polk County, MN. Their combined population is the 98,000+ number.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

You'd think someone whose screenname implies they're in southern California would understand the different ratios of hockey fans in different parts of the country.

In SoCal there is a huge bandwagon effect. Ducks won the cup a few years back and the Kings just eliminated the Sharks in the playoffs. Ice Hockey is very popular here now. Ducks and Kings have a large fan-base here, game tickets are expensive, and games are usually sold out. However, Dodgers and Clippers have lots of empty seats and cheap tickets.

Wish we had College D1 ice hockey here instead of club teams.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

The new National Collegiate Hockey Conference expects to make “two pretty big announcements by Wednesday of next week,” commissioner Jim Scherr said on Tuesday.

I saw this story was already leaked at another college hockey site so I figure I would post it here. The two big announcements are that Denver and UND are breaking away from the NCHC to form their own "super-elite-mega-like-minded" conference comprised of themselves and UAH. Denver head coach GD was quoted as saying "This was something we had to do to protect the Denver brand of hockey. The NCHC was just getting too diluted with filler teams and was really loosing its 'like-mindedness". There were too many free thinkers in the room and we need to keep more of a strangle hold on our own future. I think our fans will like the shorter 8-game conference schedule we have set up. Plus the addition of UAH should boost our winning percentage and will make it easier for fans to know where all of the teams in our new conference are located. From what I've been told that is what has been keeping attendance down recently. Not to mention helping UAH gets us the sympathy vote again, and gosh knows we need it with all the bridges we've burned. And also I would like to thank our own AD for giving me supreme power, even though I hear she is pretty smart herself."
This announcement left the remaining members of the NCHC a bit off balance. One AD who commented off the recorded stated "That was really a low blow by those two programs to go and do something like this without our knowledge. Who do they think they are? They told us that we were all special and were going to be part of the super conference with them. This was a set up all along..."
