The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

I saw this story was already leaked at another college hockey site so I figure I would post it here. The two big announcements are that Denver and UND are breaking away from the NCHC to form their own "super-elite-mega-like-minded" conference comprised of themselves and UAH. Denver head coach GD was quoted as saying "This was something we had to do to protect the Denver brand of hockey. The NCHC was just getting too diluted with filler teams and was really loosing its 'like-mindedness". There were too many free thinkers in the room and we need to keep more of a strangle hold on our own future. I think our fans will like the shorter 8-game conference schedule we have set up. Plus the addition of UAH should boost our winning percentage and will make it easier for fans to know where all of the teams in our new conference are located. From what I've been told that is what has been keeping attendance down recently. Not to mention helping UAH gets us the sympathy vote again, and gosh knows we need it with all the bridges we've burned. And also I would like to thank our own AD for giving me supreme power, even though I hear she is pretty smart herself."
This announcement left the remaining members of the NCHC a bit off balance. One AD who commented off the recorded stated "That was really a low blow by those two programs to go and do something like this without our knowledge. Who do they think they are? They told us that we were all special and were going to be part of the super conference with them. This was a set up all along..."
Didn't Michigan Tech leave the WCHA at one point? So it is only okay for them to come and go from the conference as they please, and not other teams?

In all technicality CC, DU, Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota, and North Dakota have left a conference before (WIHL).

They did. With other "like minded" teams, strangely enough. But that was different. They were one of the "haves" of college hockey at that time.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

MTU leaving was a horse of a different color than a bunch of teams forming a new league to leave other schools out in the cold.

The Kings didn't eliminate the Sharks (I wish), we beat the 'Nucks.

And a 3-team, 8 game conference is stupid. It should be a 24 game regular season, the 2 seed hosts the 3 for a best of three series, the winner takes on the top seed the following Saturday at the Conference Tourney in Omaha, the non-participating team plays a split-squad 3rd place game (I'd prefer to get the USHL's Lancers instead but they'll be playing that weekend).

Why does it matter if they formed a new league or joined an existing one? They made a decision to join a league that they thought better served their interests.

Initially, I thought the SCSU admin public remarks came across as a bunch of babies.

If you are referring to Potter's comments (go pound sand, etc), it seems like the consensus is that a lot of SCSU fans thought his comments did not speak for the what the fan base wanted.

It was also interesting to hear him at the groundbreaking ceremony say he was excited about being apart of the new league because he quickly had done a 180 about the whole thing.

Is is running for political office soon? He seems qualified.

Yeah. No disagreement here. But if you read the articles about the email correspondences, President Potter obviously said that before talking with Gasparini or Motzko. Then they convinced him it was a mistake.

Either way, what does that have to do with Tech?

Yes, MTU (along with others) left the WCHA to help start the CCHA and give it a foundation. After a few years Tech returned to the WCHA. The WCHA teams did a similar thing to grow collecge hockey when Hockey East got started by having an interlocked "conference" schedule. Who are the NCHC teams helping... other than themselves? I don't see them running to pick up UAH? Now if I see the NCHC develop 2-3 more D-I programs out West that don't currently exist, then I'll be the first to give them the praise they deserve.

UND/DU (along with others) left the WCHA to help start the NCHC and give it a foundation. Glad you finally admit what Tech did is no different from what UND and DU are doing.

What a load of crap. They didn't leave with the intention of coming back three years later.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Fans who need something to complain about.
Do fans not remember the eight cream of the crop Mountain West teams breaking away from the WAC in 1999? Almost every college conference realignment in the last 20 years has had to do with these issues. Do people in the UP and Alaska not read the newspaper?

How many times has a guy dumped his wife when someone hotter came along. This has been going on for thousands of years.

Mountain West charter members included Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah, and Wyoming. Before forming the Mountain West Conference, seven of the eight charter members had been longtime members of the Western Athletic Conference; half were WAC charter members at its formation in 1962 - UNLV had only joined the WAC in 1996.

Your "history" of why MTU, UMI, MSU, and ND left the WCHA for the CCHA after the 1980-81 season totally incorrect, The CCHA had already been a conference for nearly a decade at that point. In 1979 a plan to split the WCHA into 2 divisions as a cost cutting move was rejected. The WCHA-HE interlocking schedule was quickly determined to be a negative because of the unbalanced schedule that it created against conference teams and the loss of gate revenue by playing distant schools over local rivals, I think that everyone thought it could add some importance to the inter-conference games and make the game more national in character but it really was an idea well before it's time.

Personally... I could care less about college football even if it was in the paper, even less about rocky mountain/western college football... I wouldn't have read it. ;)
