The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

It was a less than brilliant idea to play two tourneys in the same metro at the same time. This is no reflection on the fans of these schools. It's a reflections on a few egos at a few schools. Another major shuffle will come.
Don't see how the two tourneys in same metro area vs different areas changes anything regarding brilliance of the idea. They would still be the same weekend.

I suppose it's possible if the your partner (Didier) covers for you. But his partner probably should have had or at least shared the award.

Plus he must have been a shutdown guy in his own end to win both.

He's definitely a great offensive defenseman, but no, I don't think he's a complete enough player in his own zone to win both awards.

They compete for the casual fan. They compete for media attention. For instance, if the NCHC were in Omaha, it would be the #1 event after Creighton at the NCAA.

More like they are competing for their own fanbases.....is MN, WI, SCSU, UMD, and UND more likely to draw additional fans in their fanbase to a Twin Cities game vs Omaha or Detroit......yep.

That crowd there for the Championship games for both the Big Ten and NCHC being played at the same time is really not helping your argument. Like Rapids pointed out, Those crowds might not fill the women's rink at the U. And to note, there's not a peep about the NCHC on the front sports page of the Star Tribune's website. You've really got to dig to find anything at all. Somewhere buried in the Gopher section the NCHC has as much coverage as the WCHA in Grand Rapids.

No local team playing on Thursday in B1G and No UMD or SCSU at all in NCHC, otherwise I think crowds for B1G is pretty much as expected for Friday....for Tonights games....no Minnesota and No UND.....what doesn't support what I said? I certainly didn't expect old WCHA tourney numbers for either tourney, not by a long shot. Ticket sales (not attendance which was probably 1/2 on Thursday and 70-80% of Friday tickets sold numbers) for B1G games were 7333 and 7408 for Thursday, 7963 and 9753 for Friday. For NCHC 9113 Friday 2 game session.

Regarding Media....what is local angle for NCHC with UMD and SCSU not there, besides it's college hockey and college hockey gets less than training camp MLB or off-season NFL.....women's team is going for 3 peat and local coverage this week has been weak. Though Pioneer Press had decent coverage this morning on Gopher Mens and Womens Hockey.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

It would appear a few schools greatly overestimated their appeal. They've turned one great tourney and one fairly decent event into three lackluster shows. I'd go so far as to call the Big Ten in St Paul an embarrassment and the Target Center showing isn't much better. Grand Rapids, about as expected. It was a less than brilliant idea to play two tourneys in the same metro at the same time. This is no reflection on the fans of these schools. It's a reflections on a few egos at a few schools. Yep. WCHA and the new conference will change.

The old WCHA tourney had more butts in seats than the Big 10 and NCHC will have combined this weekend. St Cloud & Duluth are finding out traveling to Tech or Bemidji wasn't nearly as bad as going to Western or Miami, and Western and Miami are finding out replacing those short bus rides to Ferris or Bowling Green were much more cost effective than flights to Grand Forks or Denver. Six figure increases in travel budgets haven't helped anyone in the "Super Conference." And now the limited revenue from the tourney compared to what they've gotten in the past will add to that deficit.

I miss the old WCHA and CCHA.

Why did a few people think they had to fix it when it wasn't even broken.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Tech and Bemidji weren't bringing any fans to the conference tourney so what the hell are you talking about? What did the NCHC teams lose by not having the smaller schools in their conference?

Those CC, Duluth and Omaha fans really filled the Target Center. St Cloud overwhelmed the place. Did they fill a whole bus with the Denver & Miami fans. They are lucky North Dakota squeaked out a quarterfinal win or there would have been nobody there.

otay......what does all that have to do with arguing that having two tourneys in same metro is problematic.....???? Did we like the old WCHA...yes. Is it more costly for some teams and leagues....yes. So what...the landscape has changed and the trees have been cut and the new trees will take some time to mature.......and by trees I mean Conferences and Tournaments.

One year. When they are playing Duluth Omaha or St Cloud will bring 5 times the fans Anchorage or Tech will. BTW, Anchorage made the Final Five this year. How many fans did they bring to Grand Rapids?

Two tourneys: same metro: same time: bad idea. It's foolish for the WCHA to do it there next year as well. They'd be better off playing at Ridder than the XCel.

Re: The NCHC: Just be glad its NaCHo League

Looks like North Dakota will sneak into the tourney. They could open against Wisconsin in Cincinnati. Look for Denver to head east and St Cloud to get Notre Dame in St Paul.

Yup.

Just look at attendance for the College World Series here. Or the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Or the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials (both times). The U.S. Olympic Committee has awarded the next one to Omaha, again. For the third time.

Give free tickets to every high school player in the metro twin cities to fill the Xcell for the WCHA.
