So then you never see any movie ever? Sounds like a good way to save money :)

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Part of it is that his act has worn on me. Part of it is that I don't like big stars being in every movie, especially sci-fi ones.

I just see them as who they are instead of their character and I lose immersion.

McConaughey has completely remade himself as an actor. His recent roles, Killer Joe, Mud, Dallas Buyer's Club, True Detective, Lincoln Commercials...all have been excellent performances by him. Even his 5 minutes in Wolf of Wall Street was excellence. He's shown that he has some serious acting chops.

The Magnificent Seven is an outstanding remake of The Seven Samurai. Both are top-flight.

I am going to commit heresy here, so please keep it to yourself. I don't really enjoy The Seven Samurai. I know, I know, I know, effing classic, I know. But try as I might I come near to falling asleep in the middle. The Magnificent Seven, on the other hand, I think I can recite by heart.

But you did trigger an example I am on board with. Yojimbo is the closest I've ever seen to a perfect Japanese movie -- I think the central character is my second favorite ever, after Bogey's Sam Spade, and Fistful of Dollars is a great remake.

I started watching Mud a while back but had to stop for some reason. I need to go back and watch again. But from what I did see in that and from Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective, you are right. Given the right role he can just nail it. I still say the Emmy should have been his for True Detective.

I think I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed DeNiro's Cape Fear and how can anyone forget Scarface? I also enjoyed The Taking of Pelham 123, 3 Men and a Baby, The Fly, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Italian Job was at least serviceable. But yeah a list of being as good/better than the original is pretty **** short.

I had no idea Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was a remake.

Scarface is a sort of remake, but not really. I do own both, and love both. I think the differences outweigh the similarities. Might have to watch the original again to judge.

Pelham, yes. The Italian Job and Gone In 60 Seconds (yes, I said the latter) were both decent and got overly-criticized, IMO. Didn't see either the remakes, originals, or both of the others.

I always like the Gone In 60 Seconds remake, not because it was a great movie but because I first saw it when I was at that age where car porn was all it took to make me like a movie. :p

For my money the two best of the year are Birdman and Whiplash. They are in limited release so it's hard to find them but very very good movies.

Saw Interstellar in IMAX. Pretty good, need to let it sink in to determine if it's better. But I'm not watching another movie in IMAX; there is such a thing as too large of a screen.

I almost agree. Depends on the movie, though. If it is a detailed movie with lots of stuff on the sides/background, I'd agree. If it's centric in nature, where the sides don't matter much...then I'd disagree.

Saw Interstellar today. That's a lot to fully take in with only one viewing. I liked it quite a bit, but will definitely watch again at some point to fully grasp the physics details in there.
