The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I look forward to Wonder Woman, anything Justice League, Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wolverine as well as Thor. Flash, Shazam, Lantern and Aquaman (is Vinny Chase playing the lead?) are intriguing, while some such as Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Cyborg do nothing for me on paper although I will probably at least give them a chance in rental.

Batman vs. Superman imho has high potential for being done wrong and to be honest I've never understood how in light of how the characters are perceived by a comic book novice such as myself that it could ever be a 'realistic' fight even in comic book land, but we shall see.
I have a bit of interest in Ant Man, but that's only because Paul Rudd has been cast as Ant Man. To me, that sounds like they're going to make it a genuinely fun movie, similar to Gaurdians of the Galaxy in tone. We'll see about the results, though.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I would be...but I havent enjoyed a Paul Rudd movie in quite some time.

And Wonder Woman is an Israeli Supermodel so I aint complaining. :D

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

A big change would be to have the characters with super powers look like normal human beings. It's understood why Batman has to look buff, but Superman could look shlubby. In fact, it would be better if he looked shlubby, since it would reinforce the notion that an out-of-shape illegal alien from Krypton would wail on the strongest slab of human beefcake.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Don't blame you. They're going for the big change though so I'm not very happy about it. We'll see.
It's going to be ****. 100%, totally unfiltered **** that will cast such a large shadow that a legit Wonder Woman movie will never come out. WW will be a sad little afterthought connected to one of them instead of being an equal part of DC's trinity. She'll be like Lois was in the Superman movie. She's there but serves no purpose and could be replaced by a cardboard cutout and retain the same impact.

Are you happy about anything though...seriously you could win a million bucks and would biotch about the taxes :D ;) (its a joke!)

We shall see, I like the origin they are using supposedly but it will all come down to the script. Chris Terrio of Argo fame is writing Batman v Superman and most likely Justice League so I am pretty positive. They need a good writer for WW or it will come off as lame. (same is true for most characters but her in specific)

I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm extremely excited for Capt. Marvel. The new Wonder Woman costume blows. I guess I'm passionate. I either love something or I hate it.

EDIT: This is awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGwuoYKhqx8

If WB/DC, Fox, or anyone else made that movie they all would be able to pick up the hammer. That's why I love Marvel Studios.

There was a really fascinating article in the New Yorker about the genesis and history of Wonder Woman.

Like a typical New Yorker article, it's pretty long and well worth it.

Superman débuted in 1938, Batman in 1939, Wonder Woman in 1941. She was created by William Moulton Marston, a psychologist with a Ph.D. from Harvard. A press release explained, “ ‘Wonder Woman’ was conceived by Dr. Marston to set up a standard among children and young people of strong, free, courageous womanhood; to combat the idea that women are inferior to men, and to inspire girls to self-confidence and achievement in athletics, occupations and professions monopolized by men” because “the only hope for civilization is the greater freedom, development and equality of women in all fields of human activity.” Marston put it this way: “Frankly, Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world.”

"In the days of ancient Greece, many centuries ago, we Amazons were the foremost nation in the world,” Hippolyte explains to her daughter in “Introducing Wonder Woman,” the character’s début, in a 1941 issue of All-Star Comics. “In Amazonia, women ruled and all was well.” Alas, that didn’t last: men conquered and made women slaves. The Amazons escaped, sailing across the ocean to an uncharted island where they lived in peace for centuries until, one day, Captain Steve Trevor, a U.S. Army officer, crashed his plane there. “A man!” Princess Diana cries when she finds him. “A man on Paradise Island!” After rescuing him, she flies him in her invisible plane to “America, the last citadel of democracy, and of equal rights for women!”

For some reason, I have a hunch that the Wonder Woman character in the movie won't quite fit that original ideal....

No that is fair Scooby, costumes dont bother me much because if you read comics different artists make them all look different. If the story is good the aesthetics dont bug me. If the story sucks then it stands out though and I hate it.

Most of these are so far away it isnt worth nitpicking for me yet. Not to mention some of the great successes would never have been my choices. (or stories)

Depends on the change. Wonder Woman is Red, White, and Blue. There's no reason to change that. You're correct though that if they write it correctly I can be swayed. Writing is key. Marvel has had great writers and proved that you can be true to the canon and still make great movies.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Like I said to Kepler, my mantra is "Like what you like for whatever reason you like it." I know you hated the last Spidey movie and my buddy (who collected Spidey comics for like 15 years) loved it. I had no interest in either so I didnt see them. Everyone has their own taste.

I know which ones I will for sure see and there are 3-4 more that if people I trust tell me I will enjoy them I will check out. As long as I enjoy myself I dont much care about anything else :)

Sure. That's a good rule for anything in life.

I agree with this. Excellent script, and a great acting job.

How an actor managed to pull that amount of emotion out of a role with no one else on screen is incredible. It just shouldn't be possible.

Well, it happens every time somebody plays opposite Julia Roberts...

I haven't seen Her yet, but the way you describe it (one person on screen) reminds me of Moon, starring Sam Rockwell. I thought it was very good. Check it out if you haven't seen it.
