I saw Dead Poets Society for the first time the other day. The first half was absolutely phenomenal, but the second was not. The set up to the climax was great; I was really expecting more out of the ending. Williams did an excellent job throughout, though.

My opinion as well.

The major weakness was the kids -- there just wasn't anything there to drive to a good finish, so they settled for a hackneyed theme. That was OK when Williams and the joy of discovery was the center of the flick, but the moment we were asked to actually care about the kids and believe they could make interesting judgments and choices, it fell apart.

One reason why Mad Men is so good is the demographic that is given fan service in virtually all television, 15-25, is mostly absent in the cast. The storylines that involve late teens and early 20-somethings are almost always derivative and thin, and can only hold the attention of other 15-25 year olds. One of the (many) reasons for the superiority of Hollywood movies from the 30s through 50s is they involve adults with adult issues. The juvenilizing of movies that began in the mid 50s has given us lots more violence and sexuality, but nothing interesting. So paradoxically, as the movies have become faster paced, they have also become more boring, and as the movies have spread out into a hundred different production sources rather than just a dozen, they have become more monotonous.

I'd throw in Insomnia over either one of those, but that's just me. I do like the original top 3 choices, however.

Terence Stamp, Luis Guzman, Peter Fonda, directed by Soderbergh? What's not to like? Apparently, a LOT. Meh story, and the presentation/editing/etc was terrible, IMO. The ending was also very anti-climactic. Yawn.

Got home and asked the boy if he wanted to watch a movie and to my surprise he suggested that we watch 42.

I liked it. Had a bit of a Disney feel and was maybe 30 minutes longer than needed (pacing was a minor issue), but overall it was a solid (not great) baseball movie.

I honestly can't think of a bad baseball movie (beyond the 2nd or 3rd of a franchise).

There's nothing like baseball when it comes to romanticizing the history of itself - and I eat it up every time.


The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again.

Yes sir.

On the baseball topic, I watched the documentary "The Battered ******** of Baseball" today on Netflix...man that was just awesome. That is everything that is right about baseball and everything that is wrong about what baseball has become...

I mentioned earlier in this thread that yes, it's a great movie. Highly recommend.

As I skier I am constantly told I am supposed to like that movie - meh. Ski Patrol is a slightly better comedy, and Aspen Extreme is a much better popcorn movie than either, despite being a cheesy early 90s drama with a cliche 80s plot (protagonist must choose between MILFy Aspen sugar momma, adorkable young, instructor-eating blondie, or best friend he moved out to Aspen with in the first place).

And give me a pre-1998 or so Warren Miller ski action binge watch over plotted ski films any time.

As for the generic plot, that is why I LOOOOOVVVVVVVEEEEE ASSpen, the South Park Episode.

I might have to bump my Netflix up for October or November so I can get the DVDs for all four of those films as a prelude to the season. Haven't seen them in years, and I could go for a bad movie night at some point.

EDIT: And yes, everything about the ASSpen episode is pure gold. The timeshare trap. The *********s. Mr. Super Cool Ski Instructor Dude. The races.
