The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I'd punch Cameron Diaz just for being Cameron Diaz. Worse than Julia and Aniston, IMO. And uglier, too.

Bookies:

Should be renamed: how not to be a bookie. You're actually rooting against the main characters because of all the stupid rookie mistakes they make. For a supposed group of 4.0 (econ/business/computer study) students, they have zero knowledge on how to run a business. Seriously, I could run a better operation then they did. Don't even bother with this movie.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

This happens a lot.

There's a suspense of belief, sure, but this was astounding, ESPECIALLY given their backgrounds in education.

Edit: one example is one of the guys buying a brand new 'Vette....while a college student with loans.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Connery was mailing it in (he often does)

Name one movie where Connery hasn't mailed it in since Goldfinger - he just speaks in that deep Scottish accent (occasionally passing it off as American or Russian) and makes millions :p. For that matter, name one movie where De Niro hasn't mailed it in since This Boy's Life. Hell, he is so clearly bored/overdoing it in the Cape Fear remake two years earlier, and that is just the beginning of a long, slow decline ever since (and I'll admit that Meet the Parents is a guilty pleasure of mine).

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Sorry that sounded snobbish. I was going for obnoxious-yet-egalitarian. I thought DeNiro was ok; Connery was mailing it in (he often does) and Costner was laughably mis-cast (though the plot and writing were so bad they deserved him). DePalma must have needed rent money; he's capable of much more.

Nailed it.

Honestly, I thought he made a strong effort in Hunt for Red October, and he was -- shockingly -- excellent in The Name of the Rose. There's a great interview with Eco where after months of studio intrigue they tell him they've cast Connery as William, and Eco thinks, "oh God, this is going to be horrible." And then the movie, and Connery, against every reasonable expectation, turned out to be terrific and very much in the spirit of the book.

When I think of guys resting on their laurels and no longer caring about their roles, Connery isn't even in my top ten. Nicholson and Pacino are the two most frustrating examples of guys who haven't put in an honest day's work in 20 years.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I don't understand why the "gruff, abrupt, straight talking" act still gets traction as a model for masculinity among young guys. In real life, it's invariably a cover for a lack of substance, and though it's portrayed as Authentic it's an extremely affected pose.

You articulated one of the things that bugged me about Lawless which was a story that should have been worth a great movie. Instead our hero is the guy you're describing (who also never does anything substantive), and the victimized cripple kid never showed a thing that was worth a tear at his passing (which would be a spoiler if it was in any way unexpected). I'm really surprised it gets such high review rankings.

I'll agree that he tried, but the scene where he gets schooled in Russian by Alec Baldwin almost bursts the bubble.

Agreed on Pacino, he's been in some putrid movies in the last 20 years.

And I would mo def notice her if she was my waitress. :p

Absolutely. Especially if she was wearing a ton of flair.

I saw River Runs Through It years ago, and while it's not my usual thing as far as movies go, I thought it was really good.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I watched a couple crappy movies that I had recorded off of premium channel free previews for when I was bored...Battleship and White House Down. As much as both of these movies sucked...they have their moments and I enjoyed them...definitely just popcorn flicks.

I thought Lawless should have been much better than it was given the cast and the story.

I admit I haven't watched the remake of Cape Fear for at least 15 years, but my memory of DeNiro was of him being at his menacing best.

Not a very good movie, but I liked Connery in The Russia House.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I think geezer summed up my thoughts of Lawless perfectly. Could have been so much better given the premise.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

No it didn't. I thought he was the worst thing about the movie.

Those are exclusive thoughts. He may have been the worse thing in the movie, but he still was tolerable. ;)

Honestly, that movie has been the only time I haven't wanted to punch him square in the nuts with brass knuckles fitted with acid-tipped spikes.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I had never seen Alien before last night.

Pretty good. It answers a lot of questions I had about Prometheus. Had I seen this movie prior to Prometheus, I would have probably enjoyed Prometheus even more than I did.

Oh geeze. Alien is an absolute classic. Accomplishes its goals sooo well. I'd actually say underrated at 49 on IMDB's top 250.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Saw The Shining at a friend's house yesterday.

Incredible film, though some of the ambiguity left me looking to fill some holes. Not plot holes or anything, but holes in how the whole story lines up for me because a lot of things could be taken in more than one way. I was told the book goes into some better detail and can close some of that up.

Still though, one of the best films I've ever seen. And it gave me a chilling dream last night. Not necessarily a nightmare but it wasn't the most pleasant dream, either.

The book is quite a bit different than the movie - almost a different story altogether.

IIRC, King didn't like the movie because of the drastic changes.

Personally, I liked both quite a bit and both are deliciously disturbing in their own way(s).
