Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I didn't think Russian ark was terrible. I mean, it's the antithesis to Michael Bay so that has to count for something.

Tarkovsky's Stalker gets my vote for antithesis of Michael Bay.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Watched We're The Millers again. It was on one of the movie channels. It is much too entertaining than it should be.

Agreed.

And I have to admit, I burst out laughing at the Aniston prank they did (clip during credits). Classic.

Edit: rufus: it was. I appreciated it then, and it's on my "might buy" list.

The Untouchables

I have no idea why this movie gets the acclaim it does. The only thing above average was the cinematography. The music was terrible. The acting was ok. The writing screenplay were boring and predictable.

C+/B- at best.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

We're the Millers sucked hard. It sucked so bad even seeing Jennifer Aniston as a stripper gives it zero rewatch value.

And the Untouchables is great, remember when it came out.

Prometheus could have been so great...Alien is in a class by itself. Prometheus is Ridley Scott being surrounded by Yes Men and making a movie that had so many plot holes and mind bendingly stupid story points even people like me that like didnt hate the movie cant defend it. Oh how the mighty have fallen...

I disagree with most of that.

1. Jennifer Anniston as a stripper always has rewatch value. But the movie overall wasn't bad. I enjoyed it.
2. Untouchables was not great. I don't care when it came out either. There are plenty of movies that came out even earlier that are absolute masterpieces. It was an ok movie. I also watched A River Runs Through It tonight. It came out a mere five years later and it nailed it on all accounts. Score, script, cinematography, acting.
3. Plot holes, schmot holes. It was an entertaining popcorn flick.

Untouchables is a solid movie. B+/A-. Not Godfather quality, but way better than a lot of crap out there.

And did you really put A River Runs Through It above it? No way.

The Untouchables

It's weak, but it gets raves from younger males because Sean Connery chews scenery and snarls tough guy lines that make their hearts beat faster. That kind of rumbling, reticent Strong Old Guy stuff makes them think of their dads or something.

Jennifer Aniston is only the second-most overrated good looking actress of the past 20 years because that period includes Julia Roberts. If either of those women was your waitress you'd never notice her.

I consider myself a younger male, think The Rock is an incredible movie, but I definitely think Untouchables was a big, big letdown.

I guess I also think Julie Roberts isn't a terrible actress either. Anniston might be terrible (I don't know) but it's not like she's had a shot at anything serious either.

I would definitely notice both of them if one was my waitress. *drool*

This is Jennifer Aniston taking on a serious role. I never saw it, but heard good things. The Good Girl

I've heard that, too.

As for The Rock, it's Nic Cage and Michael Bay. Talk about over-the-top-crazy in their crafts. HOWEVER, I thought the movie was a great summer popcorn style of movie. And Ed Harris...he kinda rules.

Julia Roberts has had some ok performances, but nothing extraordinary.

Edit: Horrible Bosses was much better than it had any right to be, and I thought Aniston was great in it.

San Diego Comic Con starts today... For those of us that enjoy comic book movies, this is like Christmas morning... Really looking forward to what Marvel is going to offer us... They've already released their schedule through 2019 with many of the release dates having TBD projects... I'm sure we're gonna get more info by the end of the weekend... Can't wait for this stuff to come out :D
No comic book movie news will top this as the best thing to come out of Comic Con... :D :p

Dont fall for it...terrible movie.

Ya know, people may have liked the Untouchables for more reasons than just Sean Connery Kepler. Deniro outshines him as Capone anyways. Hell I would argue Andy Garcia had the best performance in the movie. Sometimes when you pre-judge everyone you come off as an Ivy League snob just so ya know...

You are right about Roberts though, she hasnt done anything of value since Flatliners. If she was my waitress though I would notice her, I just would request a new table. :D I would never say a bad thing about Aniston though, well except she is a one note actress but I would never kick her out of bed ;)

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

She Done Him Wrong (1933)

What a great movie. Mae West is the scene stealer in this one, as a sort of "playa" who manipulates men. Definitely recommend.

The Battered Bastards Of Baseball

Documentary on the Portland Mavericks, the only independent baseball team at the time (1973-77), in a Class A league. Excellent documentary. Must see if you are a baseball fan.

Awesome movie. TCM played it as part of a week-long tribute to Mae.

"I wasn't always rich. There was a time I didn't know where my next husband was coming from."

Pre-code movies were great.

Sorry that sounded snobbish. I was going for obnoxious-yet-egalitarian. I thought DeNiro was ok; Connery was mailing it in (he often does) and Costner was laughably mis-cast (though the plot and writing were so bad they deserved him). DePalma must have needed rent money; he's capable of much more.

I don't understand why the "gruff, abrupt, straight talking" act still gets traction as a model for masculinity among young guys. In real life, it's invariably a cover for a lack of substance, and though it's portrayed as Authentic it's an extremely affected pose.

Aniston's not an actress, she just plays that same note and the money keeps pouring in. I'm sure she's great in RomComs -- she shares that saccharine vibe the way, say, Ahnie just screams Action Flick. My preference for Ahnie, who has no more range or talent than Aniston, is probably just down to genre preference... nah, I saw Predator again last night and it's objectively awesome!

Am currently reading a book on the Hays Code/history of that era, hence checking out some of these movies (although I was always a fan of Mae's quips). The book is "Hollywood Censored" by Gregory D Black. I've seen a few gangster flicks from that era, and now broadening my horizons with other types of movies.

Edit:

13 Sins:

Morality piece, where the main character has 13 challenges and each challenge accomplished brings him more money. It's worth a watch. Pretty twisted.

Dead In Tombstone:

Cliched redemption/revenge movie starring Danny Trejo. If you have some time to kill...then maybe watch it. Meh.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I saw Sex Tape last week. About its only redeeming feature is that you get a few great side boob and butt shots of Cameron Diaz, who is a lady who I wouldn't kick out of bed for eating crackers. There was a few chuckles, but honestly, most of the time you could see them coming. If nothing more, it serves as a reason as to why you should never take naked photo's of yourself or try to make a porno.
