The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Funny, I just heard a review this morning from the local reviewer that just trashed the movie. Said it was the worst of the four.

Critics everywhere are not being kind to it. Audience polling, however, is much better. It usually is, though.

It's very possible he was just one of those people who think Michael Bay is the devil. He did say, "The best way to reboot this franchise would be to dump Michael Bay" or something to that effect.

I think Bay can't win on this movie. You have one group that say Bay spends time with human characters when this is really about cool robots that turn into other cool things. Then you have those that want to humanize the story, to make it about the people being impacted by what the robots are doing. No matter how Bay makes the movie, he's going to get smacked around. But since he's never made movies with particular deep feelings - his two attempts were Pearl Harbor, which didn't really work out well for him storywise and Top Gun, where it turned into gay volleyball and Tom Cruise smiling, he's focusing on the robots. Color me shocked.

what are you talking about? Michael Bay had nothing to do with Top Gun...

His best work ever was The Rock. Also did Bad Boys, Armageddon and The Island.

I am proud to say that I am not a critic. :) I expected to be entertained, and the movie met my expectation (and then some). Plenty of action (often way too much for my feeble old mind to process!), cheesy one-liners, a wee-bit of drama, a few hot actresses, and a pretty-cool story line (potential spoiler comments omitted), and there you have it... I approve (as if I mattered in the first place! ;) ).

If I had expected Gone With The Wind or Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants, I would have been seriously disappointed. But I didn't... I expected big robots that are also cool cars (and other machines) to make things go "boom", with numerous battles between the good guys and bad guys. I got it, then add-in the other stuff mentioned above as a bonus.

Cheers,
~TTF

Wait, wait... Does Mark Whalberg play an everyman, retired/active military marksman, wear a jean jacket, and have his trademark clean cut coif?

Kinda like 3/4 of his movies this past decade? :D

I'm kinda looking forward to seeing it. There were scenes filmed at the Chicago Water Treatment plant where my company is working (I was out in the field working when they were filming down there).

And talk in a dull, expressionless voice, except when he's trying to portray excitement or emotion, and his voice rises a couple octaves?

Currently watching A Mighty Wind. Such a good movie; I found it at a yard sale for $3.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

World War Z

Very good. Top notch "horror" film. It could have used an extra 20-30 minutes but it might have ruined it.

Very good and highly recommended.

It's good, but I think Best In Show takes the cake in the Guest library (besides Spinal Tap, of course).

Today's Boston Globe has a review of Snowpiercer. Apparently it's on a very limited release to a ******ing contest between the director and the studio head.

The review says it's a great movie. Anybody seen it, plan to see it?

I don't know what the differences are, but just watched the unrated/extended version on Netflix streaming. This version is just over 2 hours, I think. I liked it, definitely worth watching. Normally not a fan of zombie movies, either.

Watched The Purge last week because I saw the trailer in theaters for the sequel and it looked pretty good.

I don't know how they messed up such an easy premise. Characters were poorly put together, their reactions to certain events made no sense, and the ending was just like, "Well... Bye" .

The sequel looks better though since they won't be focusing on just one family and shouldn't be stuck in one setting the whole time.

I agree with that review. The movie needed to be at least 30 minutes longer to really get the characters rounded out. dx and I were talking about it this weekend, and he thinks the same thing. It could have been sooooo good, but they just went, "Meh, we're half-arsing it, at best. Give us money."

God the concept had so so much promise. It was fresh and should have given the writers so many opportunities to develop the characters and explore the human psyche.

That movie in the hands of someone who isn't on par with directing Battlefield Earth could be something spectacular.

I think you answered your own question. I haven't seen The Purge but I have seen about a hundred cases where a sci-fi movie takes an interesting premise and uses it as the pretext to tell that same hackneyed, safe, box office successful story of a family where Son and Daddy are at loggerheads, Daddy and Mommy divorced but now must work together, Daughter is the only only one who sees the good in Bad Boy Who Now Becomes Mature Dealing With The Crisis, and Toddler is a prop that gets into mortal danger every fifteen minutes with welling background music and weepy dialog. Just once I want Bad Boy to take a look at the family, think "Daughter's cute but not that cute," and split with Toddler as an emergency protein source.

Thinking about it, "Panic Room" did excellent in doing just what you mentioned above. Although there IS a rumored "twist" to the whole thing.
