The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

As nerdy as I am (I play Magic FFS), I'm not into comic books. Although I know a fair bit just by nerd osmosis. That said, I like the Batman and X-Men movies (except X3) and just haven't gotten into much else. The Spidey movies are ok, sadly I really haven't watched any Avengers stuff, and the only redeeming quality of the Fantastic Four is Jessica Alba.

On the note of Green Goblin, at least they haven't butchered him like they did to Doctor Doom!

Do you know the origin of the Green Goblin? No, you don't. So why pipe up?

Leaving aside that you sound like a complete ****** when you talk like that...you realize that in the movie you are talking about they gave Spiderman organic web shooters which was completely different than the origin and all stories before that (well 95% of them) where Peter Parker made the web shooters himself right? They turned Spidey into a mutant!

And that change was so well liked that they changed his origin in the comics to be exactly the same.

Remember, very few people read comics. In fact I would bet that 90% of the people who see these movies rarely if ever picked up a comic book and I would bet 75% never did once in their life. Do you really think the studios give a crap about what the nerds think...they care about the majority of people who dont get bent out of shape over stupid stuff that matters very little.

I think the main reasons I liked the Star Trek reboots are the main reasons you didn't. It's all good.

As far as Pacific Rim - it was good at being just what you said. I just need a little more to truly enjoy a movie which is why I don't usually love big budget action movies or comic book movies.

I liked Pacific Rim - effects were great - I just didn't really like it and wouldn't re-watch it like I would (and have) Independence Day, Armageddon, Alien, Predator, Terminator, the most recent Treks etc...

I agree with you...Pacific Rim is not rewatchable but I didnt leave the theater thinking I wasted my money so I consider that a win :)

So, you're saying I should like the Nicholson Joker then. Ok, got it.

I dont tell people what they should like...you have every right to be ****ed. My problem is that you decided to be a complete tool and tell rufus to shut his mouth because you didnt agree with his opinion about a lame *** character in a comic book.

I do have to wonder though...do you like the Heath Ledger Joker? I ask because I have read hundreds of Batman stories and there are very very few that are anything like that. They changed that after TDK but beforehand he was not that type of character...

Also I find it funny you seem to love the changes in the Hobbit...do you just enjoy little fat people running that much ;)

I certainly apologize to rufus but his response said that the Green Goblin needs a mechanical suit which clearly he does not was ridiculous. And that concept ruins the character. It's interesting to me that the main character can be changed to be entirely genetic but everyone else in this Spidey movie universe requires technology to get going.

I loved the Ledger Joker and the character was not drastically altered from the comic books. The Green Goblin which I consider the second best comic book villian of all time has not been depicted onscreen even close to what he's supposed to be.

It's funny that you can meltdown about the Hobbit and that's ok, but I can't about Spiderman 2. My how the double standard goes around here.

Does changing how the Green Goblin gets his powers change what the character does within the story? Does he still fly around tossing pumpkin bombs at people? Does he still act like a schizo? If the answer to all of those is yes, then it really shouldn't matter.

When it comes to changes made to the Hobbit movies, they weren't just changing small aspects of characters, they're changing the entire flow and tone of the story by adding completely new sequences and removing those already existing within the book. Yes, the same was done to the Lord of the Rings movies, but it was done well. The single Hobbit movie I've seen thus far just feels entirely forced because I'm somewhat familiar with the original story that flowed along nicely and kept me interested. I fell asleep watching the first movie and I wasn't tired when it started. While watching the Harry Potter movies, there were changes made between the books and movies that I either liked, accepted or disliked for various reasons, but ultimately, it all depended upon how the director was able to account for a feeling or weight to a time period within the story that I knew should be there because it's how people would act in real life.

Harry Potter movies all had some measure of control from the author. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit had zero. In fact when Tolkien sold the movie rights to his books he did so thinking it would never happen. The Tolkien estate are not fans of any of the films as I understand it.

As for the Green Goblin we'll all just have to agree to disagree. As far as I'm concerned I'm done with the Spiderman franchise and the X-Men franchise (which I have been since the 3rd film). The movies under Marvel's complete control have been the best and closest to canon and I'll continue with those.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

The deviations from the book are far... FAR from the only things that make the Hobbit movies craptastic.

The over reliance on cgi - both for characters and locations/environment. The ridiculous action sequences that we've all seen before in Transformers, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, King Kong etc...

The complete lack of character development and chemistry. The unnecessarily dark tone to the story.

The Hobbit movies are flat out bad movies in their own right and then couple that with all of the bone-headed, I can write a better story than Tolkien changes that Lord PJ made and you have the steaming pile of dragon **** that are these Hobbit films.

Yes, a few things were changed in the first trilogy, but for the most part they either worked or were easily forgivable (Faramir being maybe the one that bothered me the most). The changes to the Hobbit have been so drastic that the original story is barely recognizable and unfortunately, the changes are just flat out terrible - whether measured against the original story or not.

Nice try, but I never told you to shut your pie hole just because you like the changes. I criticized the actual changes. You decided you had to be King of the Nerds and attack a guy who liked something you didnt.

Apples and oranges my friend.

I don't care if he liked it. That's not what he said. He said that he had to be mechanical and no he doesn't. That's all I was attacking. Comprehension please.

The weird thing is in the previous Spiderman movies, it was exactly the opposite. Spiderman's webs were genetic, which was wrong but they had the Goblin needing the suit.

I haven't seen it, so don't know if I like it or not. And I didn't say it had to be mechanical either. I just pointed out that since the Goblin was head of a huge tech company, one can understand why they chose to make the suit mechanical in nature. Perhaps if he was a scientist dealing in genetics, they may have given him a different origin(The Lizard).

Jesus, don't wet your pants so just because a movie is different from the (comic)book. It's just a frikkin' movie.

The Willem Dafoe Goblin didn't require the suit for his powers, if memory serves. He inhaled that super-soldier formula to make him both really strong and psychotic. The suit was just battle armor, serving as physical protection and concealing his identity.

Fine and dandy. I'll just read when others complain about movies in here and refrain from doing it myself. Carry on.

And I'll even change my opinion. Go see Spiderman 2. Greatest SPIDEY MOVIE EVAH!!! Green Goblin is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow...talk about lacking comprehension. This all started because of what you said to rufus not your complaining. Yet even though that has been pointed out to you you still ignore it and pretend like we are stifling your freedom of speech. You literally are Bob Graying right now congrats!

It was a great film. 10.

Does anyone have feedback on alternatives to Netflix? I'd like access to both old and new stuff, but preferably not with a monthly fee, because right now, I'm thinking of claiming my Netflix fees as a charitable donation for which I receive no goods or services. :p Can you just rent a movie anymore? How's the selection at Redbox? Does anyone use Vudu? I have a Blu-ray player with streaming capability - that's really the only device I'd use to watch stuff.

If you want to "just rent a movie," then Amazon has its Amazon Instant Video service with a per-per-rental setup, and there's vudu that doess the same. My experience with Amazon has been all right; I've not tried vudu, but I hear good things about it with 1080p streaming unlike Amazon's 720p.
