The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

American Hustle. Apparently I'm in the minority here, but I thought there were more acting performances that shined and for me it was a better overall movie than Dallas Buyers Club.

Because there were more essential characters, duh. :p

Just watched that tonight. I'd take Leto's performance overall, but then the rest go to AH's cast. And the movie was slightly better also, IMO. Really enjoyed it, and definitely worth a watch.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

While AH had a few more essential parts, Garner and Zahn had plenty of screen time. But neither were that memorable and I think it hurt overall. Leto and MM though were obviously exceptional.

While AH had a few more essential parts, none of the secondary parts in DBC - even if relatively lacking time on screen such as Garner and Zaha - were that memorable and I think it hurt overall. Leto and MM though were obviously exceptional.

Yeah, DBC was a two-man show, really. AH, just like the cons they did, needed to be multi-layered and have multiple characters. About my only complaint about AH, was there were shots that were a little too artsy/stylized (oooo an odd camera angle showing a car door closing) or unneeded. Probably could have cut the movie by about 10-15 minutes, but that is total nit-picking.

Good job, Sony. Way to screw up the Green Goblin for the 3rd time. Second greatest comic book villian of all time and you can't get it right?

I kinda liked Willem Dafoe as Goblin but havent wasted a penny on the new Spidey movies. what I have read about this one doesnt make me wish to change that ;)

Gurt,

I would have liked Star Trek more if it was anything but Star Trek. I thought the characters were fine except not as replacements for those same characters in a different set of TV/Movies. I just dont see Simon Pegg as Scotty or the leader of the Rohirrim as Bones. It just doesnt work. Put them in another film and yes they can shine, in that movie all I think is "That isnt Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner" and their lame, half assed impressions of them didnt help. (and I am not a Trekkie either, I always preferred Star Wars but I watched enough Trek to not respect Abrams or how he tried to turn Trek into Star Wars)

I enjoyed Pacific Rim for what it was...I didnt expect any character growth I expected a cliche story with big robots fighting big monsters. :)

It was a mechanical suit. If Spiderman doesn't require a mechanical suit then why does the Green Goblin? It ruins the character.

Cause he wasn't bitten by a radioactive spider which gave him superpowers, but was the head of a corporation that developed weapons and other gizmos.

Why did Iron Man need a mechanical suit? Well, other than to keep him alive.

Sure but the original Green Goblin got his powers from the "Goblin Formula" not an ironman type suit. The glider was his technological tool, not his suit.

Do you know the origin of the Green Goblin? No, you don't. So why pipe up?

The movie is not the comic book. Changes will happen. Sometimes you will like the changes, other times you won't. Why get so wound up? I've not seen the new movie, but it sounds like they changed it to this suit. If that's the case, then they're probably trying to play off the younger generation's closer affinity to technological solutions to life's problems in the real world. The change is hardly shocking.

Marvel Entertainment wouldn't have done it. It's only because the boobs at Sony own the movie rights that the character is being destroyed. The worst part is he's called the Green Goblin and in the movie he isn't even green. So, why the name?

Oh, and in the movie there is huge references to genetics and genetic engineering. Thus the original Green Goblin origin fit in with the movie perfectly.

I think the main reasons I liked the Star Trek reboots are the main reasons you didn't. It's all good.

As far as Pacific Rim - it was good at being just what you said. I just need a little more to truly enjoy a movie which is why I don't usually love big budget action movies or comic book movies.

I liked Pacific Rim - effects were great - I just didn't really like it and wouldn't re-watch it like I would (and have) Independence Day, Armageddon, Alien, Predator, Terminator, the most recent Treks etc...

Pacific Rim was a Japanese anime show with live actors tossed in here or there and set in China. Calling out the attacks verbally when the pilots are supposed to be linked by the brain? It reminded me of Voltron from way back in the day. I liked Voltron as a kid, it's pretty cheesy these days. Still, the Asian lady pilot was easy to watch.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Just saw Spiderman 2... I think that the Goblin was done fine... It simply isn't just a mechanical suit that makes him go... There's a ton more to it...

And since we're on the subject of Spidey villians: I'm really beginning to feel that the whole Sinister Six idea is gonna end up as one big dumpster fire... Paul Giamonti as Aleksei Sytsevich could have been better... He was limited to his time on screen in this movie, and it really seemed like he was just thrown in to hint at future events... Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro left a lot on the table as well... You think you're getting Electro as the main villain going in, but there isn't much to him in here... Again, it seems as if they are building to future events and they took time away from Electro to get other stuff into this movie... Because of things like this, I would put this "Comic Universe" last among the 3 current ones that are out there... Spidey needs to do a lot to hold my interest for future movies...

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Honestly, outside of the Batman movies, both old (Keaton) and new (Bale), I really don't care for the comic book movirs. I was never into comic books and the stories just don't interest me.

This.

I would add the X-men movies as I liked those when I watched them with my kid, but just those and some of the Batman flicks.

Tried a few of the others and just can't do it.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Superman and Batman for me. The first Ghost Rider was okay, the second sucked arse. But, GR isn't as iconic either.

Never into comics other than business opportunities (made a sh*load on the "Superman Death" issue, for example).

No Spiderman, X-Men, Avengers, Cpt America, etc. No interest.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

The Christian Bale Batman movies top the comic movie list for me. Followed by The Avengers. The individual movies for the Avengers characters are pretty lame, Iron Man (I) is the best of those in my opinion.

Bale/Batman as a whole, no doubt. If it were just left to the original Superman I/II (II being the Donner cut) with Reeve, only then would there possibly be an argument.
