The end of HG2 did kind of drag on, but that first 90 minutes I thought was really good, and I based my review on the overall movie, not just parts. It's no movie of the year, but I would definitely recommend seeing it.

Yeah it is a little suprising that the actual games in the movie were such a small part of it. Decent movie. Thought the first one was better but needed to see this one. Thought the same about Pirates 2. A good bridge to the end. Only 2 things kind of bothered me about the arena... the fog issue was very easily solved by accident and why changing the clock was such a big deal for the head guy.

Was flipping and Independence Day was on Starz or something so the boy and I dug out the dvd and watched it.

The perfect summer blockbuster/popcorn movie. Haven't seen it in at least 5 or 6 years. Still a really fun watch and a decent amount of heart.

Tomorrow Armageddon?

Dallas Buyers Club

Leto and McConaughey deserve all the accolades they got. Great movie, better performances. Definitely a must-watch.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

White House Down... It was okay. A little tough to see Jamie Fox as the president, but he did well. Lots of underlying liberal messages in the movie for those who care. Some decent action sequences. For some reason the part that bothered me was the press revealing the identity of the girl posting the videos when they knew she was still trapped inside. Not smart.

This one came out about the same time as Olympus has Fallen, which is very similar with the plot. Still give the nod of these two to Olympus.

Just found this thread so this may be redundant redundant. Three top movies for me: "Thin Red Line", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Heat". I recommend them to anyone who likes war/action/science fiction flicks. :) Another good recent film: "Melancholia" - but it's not for everyone.

So, even though CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER doesn't come out till Friday, the internet is trying it's ****edest to spoil the movie for me

I get that there is a ton of hype for this movie... But the amount of spoilers out there is ridiculous... IGN already has a "Captain America End Credits Scene Explained" video up on YouTube for Pete's sake... I have had to basically stop searching out any kind of movie news/commentary to keep from having things spoiled... I can't remember spoilers being this perverse...

I will admit that this has peaked my interest even more in some fashion... The amount of hype seems to back up the notion that "things will be significantly different in the Marvel Universe after these 2 hours are up"... Also, apparently no one does Midnight screenings anymore either... All the Captain America screenings are at 8pm on Thursday around here...

I kind of miss doing the Midnight screenings. It lets you know right off the bat that you're in a crowd of hardcore fans right off of the bat. It weeds out that friend that's only going to the movie because his friends are going to be there. That clown will be there for an 8 pm show, the midnight show? not so much.

Saw a very interesting BBC documentary about Velasquez' painting The Rokeby Venus. It tells the history of Velazquez' nude Venus, painted in the mid 1600s, a rarity in Spain since it was during the inquisition. I'm an art history idiot, but it was very interesting. I think the title was Private Life of a Masterpiece.

Why would you concern yourself with the reason someone else is there to watch a movie?

According to this writer, the movie Noah is not based on the Bible story at all but instead is based on the Kabbalah. Interesting reading.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

So, CAPTAIN AMERICA

Fanboy or not, I really think this might have been one of the best comic book movies we've seen so far... The storytelling used is becoming so deep and layered... This movie tied pretty much everything we've seen up to this point together... They then proceeded to effect everything that they have tied together... I'm not sure how to word this without spoiling everything, so I'll just leave it at that...

Coming into this movie, I have seen several references saying that the movie had a THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR feel to it... That was an accurate description... The movie was very tense and you kept looking ahead to see the next step that you could be taking... This movie isn't "fun" like we saw in AVENGERS or IRON MAN 2... There are several one liners that will give you a chuckle, but for the most part, it's all business...

The characters are all very well played... Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon was easily the best played character here... He was a great compliment to Chris Evan's Steve Rodgers... I also like how the molded Mackie's character after a "modern" veteran... He played that angle perfectly and made the character very believable... You also get a ton of development from Steve Rodgers, Black Widow, and Nick Fury in this film... Each of them does this in their own way, and it's all very easy to connect to...

I saw this film Thursday night, and I am STILL trying to take it all in... There is a ton to digest here... I am starting to wonder how these films feel as a stand along movie however... I can't see a first time Marvel viewer getting anywhere near the same experience I did from this film... I have to believe that was by design... But what is the cost of that? Is Marvel at a point where they feel that they are at a point where they have maxed out on their fanbase potential? What does that mean for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Like I said, I'm still trying to take in the scope of this movie, so this is pretty much a ramble on my part... Add in making a conscious effort to not spoil anything, and you can see the difficulty of making this post... What are your thoughts?

Because he's taking a ticket away from a "hardcore" fan who has earned the right to purchase said ticket via spending hundreds of dollars on picture books. "Hardcore" comic book fans are just better people than the rest of us who have lives. They do not wish to lower themselves by having to watch it on the same screen as us lesser people....

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

As a comic book fan let me just say, hardcore comic book fans are some of the worst fans of anything across all mediums. They are the Hipster ****** version of Nerds and are part of the reason the comic book medium is dying a slow painful death.

Speaking of nerds i am watching the Jobs movie...it is ok but Pirates of Silicon Valley (a movie that was made for TBS with Noah Wiley as Jobs and Anthony Michael Hall as Gates) was way better. This movie completely ignores how Jobs and Apple got their entire operating system from Xerox which is why Gates was able to steal it and adapt it so quickly.

Intro'd the woman to blaxploitation last week with "Black Belt Jones." Surprisingly to me, she loved it (she doesn't like/get the current "purposely make a bad movie a la Sharknado" movies). This week she requested to see "Black Dynamite." :D

I saw the Robocop remake today. Brilliant. It was one of the funnier movies I've seen recently.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I know that. I guess she just doesn't see the point of making, much less watching, a movie like that. Oh well.
