The Michigan OT Goal

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

Even as a Michigan fan I originally thought that even though it was a goal, the video I saw wasn't conclusive enough to overturn. Then I saw this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZRQLZ29WEVU

And I think this view is conclusive. especially when they run the video in reverse.

The point of review is to get the call right. And i think they did.

Great Post. After Watching this video, I have to give the refs props. They made they right call. I said on this site that I thought it was a goal, but there was no proof. I stand corrected.

That view makes it even more clear that the puck was not on the ground. You can't tell if the white is because the puck is in the net or in the air.

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

In the air? Unless your screen shows 3D no video would ever make that clear. What is clear is that his pad, which is on TOP of the puck, pulls the puck out of the goal. How would it be in the air when it is UNDER a pad? at .28 of the video you see it clearly in the goal.

And it slides out, where a Mav player takes it and shoots it away from the net.

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

I'm a Michigan hater, a BIG Michigan hater, but that's a goal. My only question is if the referee had the angle that ESPN showed in this clip. If all they had was the overhead, there is no conclusive evidence and they should not have changed the call. However, if they did have the same look we can see in the youtube clip. It is the correct call. Whatever the case, the proper result is in the books. Go Sioux. Beat the Blioux.

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

I'd agree it looks pretty conclusive on that video, but I'm still calling it an illegitimate win for Michigan for no other reason than it makes their fans' heads explode. :D

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

I'll take the win. I remember last year and those haunted goalposts of the past. Take the W and the win the next day versus CC and we'll see you in the Frozen Four.

I appreciate the candor--especially with all the mindless caviling going on in this thread between M and non-M fans doing nothing beside whining, inflaming, and littering the board with their confirmation-biases-up-the-wazoo--and can't disagree your opinion (especially given my biases).

Anyway, that's enough abstract jibber jabber for my first post @uscho: See you and yours in 1.5 weeks. The odds hold that our game will decide this year's national champion, and I can't disagree with those odds.

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

At some point it behooves a fan base to actually be the fan base it wants to be.

Michigan won the game, by literally the narrowest of margins. Procedurally wrong, yes, but substantively right.

Ours was one of, what, three teams that won at Yost this year, a couple draft picks against a couple dozen, and the magic of college hockey is that our townie school went 5-2 against the almighty Big 10 this year. We have nothing to be ashamed of in our team, our league, or school, or our boys. Rolling around in the snot with UMICH and his redoubtable ilk does little to advance any of our causes. His level of evolution is not the ceiling.

Time to evolve with the team, guys.

AMEN to that!!!. "Evolve"..."Grow"... love those buzzwords.
Rick gets it, Rick has always gotten it....

Yeah, he gets it... his program gets it...but his fanbase doesn't. Even in his attempt to be "above" the mud, somehow I think it is just in the UNO fan's nature to wallow in it, especially when it comes to Michigan. His undertone about rolling around in the snot is just an example. This whole "we're just a lil humble townie school" nonsense is so opposite to the screaming U!N!O! chest thumpers spouting about being in their "elite league", beating "elite" programs and proclaiming their arrival. Funny how that hasn't transferred into the playoffs.

Re: The Michigan OT Goal

You know...if Faulkner stays put on his knees, instead of rolling onto his side...we're not having this conversation.

Watching that on a bigger screen than an iPod....that's a goal. No question in my mind any more.

Per the Michigan Daily's Mark Burns on Twitter a few days ago:

"CCHA head of officiating Steve Piotrowski said that ESPN provided extensive video replays 4 reviewing that goal yesterday. Mult. zoom angles. According Piotrowski, the review took so long because of how many angles the refs wanted to look at. Substantial evidence of a goal."

Multiple zoom angles is the key there. I know they looked at more than the overhead because ESPNU a few times showed the refs in the box looking at the replay monitor with different views on it.

EDIT: In fact, if you watch that YouTube video again... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZRQLZ29WEVU ... look at the little box during the second half of the video and you see the refs looking at an ice level view of the goal, so right there we already know they had more than the overhead.

Well, I certainly haven't conducted myself without reproach, but I think the better angels of our nature ought to take over. The game's over, it was literally as close as an NCAA game can be.

I certainly don't think you're cut from the same cloth as UMICH, nor do you believe I'm the same as every other UNO fan. I have bared my teeth too often this year, my friend, and I'm sorry. I want no more quarrel with you.

Yea, I admit, Rick isn't that bad. He is actually the only uno fan I can tolerate. It's unfortunate that I must refer to him as a "Husker-reject" by asssociation. Oh well...

How can you blame when when the rest of the fan-base is what it is.

Pax tecum, my friend.
