The Mental Health Thread

jericho

mascot extraordinaire
If you’re feeling lonely, sad, depressed, or anything else, use this thread. We’ve all been through heartache and most of us are all friends here. No matter who posts in this thread, let’s not send it off the rails. Black, white, left, right, Minnesota, North Dakota fans, all are welcome. Let’s a support each other.

As a mental health professional, I endorse this thread. Did you decide to start it because our surgeon general said loneliness is just as dangerous for human health as, say, alcoholism?

Speaking from personal experience, loneliness is one of the main things that can lead to or trigger alcohol/substance abuse in susceptible individuals.

Absolutely. The Covid pandemic took a toll on our adult substance abusers at my hospital. Some came in way more often, and some said they came just to be around other people. Overdose deaths have skyrocketed the past few years, with fentanyl certainly being the main driver, but I don’t doubt the loneliness factor from Covid played a role.
Now, that all said, I still think the shutdowns were the right move. Many more people would have died from Covid than saved from drug overdose deaths if everything had stayed open, but alas, I digress.

Plus, fentanyl-laced street drugs were already an issue before the pandemic.

Absolutely. Getting worse though. Two years ago, none of the adolescent kids on my substance abuse unit used fentanyl; now, half or more purposely use fentanyl, many in the form of “perc 30s.” It was either last year or the year prior that there were 100,000 overdose deaths for the first time in the history of our country, and it’ll only get worse before it (might) get better.
If y’all haven’t already seen it, watch Heroin(e) on Netflix sometime. The amount of money spent on that one county alone to address drug-related healthcare is insane.

Googled that, and those "perc 30s" are some scary good fakes made with fentanyl. Hard to tell the difference without looking closely, which your desperate addict isn't going to do.

When I had surgery on my right foot about 4 years ago, I learned Norco/synthetic opiates did not actually relieve pain, but they sure put me in a blissful "i-d-g-a-f" state about it. And I mixed alcohol with it, so I spent about a week either asleep or in a state of "wow, this is (censored) awesome." When the supply of Norco ran out, Reality yanked me back to Earth and it was certainly not awesome. Later, I learned booze and those pills do not mix and it's a miracle I didn't suffer any long lasting effects.

Despite the bleating from the GQP, it seems that most fentanyl is simply being shipped in by legit carriers. If anyone in Congress actually cared, they could attempt to do something about that.

Wait, you mean having someone carry the drugs through miles and miles of desert and then toss a sack of it over a wall isn't the way people actually decide to get their product to its destination?

Is fentanyl actually manufactured outside the country? I thought the whole point was any inbred idiot could make up a homemade batch.

Not gonna get popped by the border patrol if you never cross a border.

Isn’t what you are thinking of meth?

Guy in Maine a couple weeks ago had 40 lbs of fentanyl shipped to some restaurant. The employees at the restaurant didn’t know what it was so opened it up and called the police then the guy who shipped it showed up an hour later looking for it. Tough times ahead for that guy.

I thought every drug delivery involved a balloon and at least one orifice. (plural of orifice = orifi?)

I believe the vast majority of fentanyl is synthesized overseas. Meth, on the other hand, has always been as American as canned apple pie filling.

I've actually been dealing with anxiety myself, and knowing that there are effective treatments like CBT is really reassuring. Mental health is something that affects all of us in different ways, and having a space where we can share and support each other is invaluable. On a related note, I wanted to mention that if anyone here is struggling with addiction alongside mental health issues, there are resources available to help. And for anyone looking for more information or assistance, the National Rehab Hotline at nationalrehabhotline.org is a resource to check out. AA meetings can be a lifeline for those battling addiction, providing support and understanding in a non-judgmental environment.

So I'm curious for the middle aged and older crowd on here, how'd you handle your midlife crisis moments?

I turn 43 this coming winter, and the combination of 1) suddenly having more disposable income in the last year due to new jobs for both my wife and I, 2) seeing my parents age visibly and significantly over the last 2-3 years (not to mention my father-in-law passing suddenly from cancer a few years back in his 60s), and 3) watching my daughter grow up quickly (in a "the days are long but the years are short" sense), have all made me have more thoughts stereotypically seen as midlife crisis moments.

I wouldn't say I have feelings of regret, but definitely think about "what if" alternative scenarios for past decisions a lot more. And it feels like the brain has ever so slightly shifted its internal dialogue when facing situations to be less complacent and more wanting to do new stuff now that i can afford it, which is good as far as it goes, but the risk/reward calculation is going with it at least for that initial impression/impulsive response before the thinking brain kicks in and says "what the hell, you moron."

Like seeing a college kid on a crotch rocket and now having the initial reaction of thinking that looks like fun and I should do that too despite never having touched a motorcycle in my life. Or when my daughter got her ears pierced I even had a thought about getting one of mine done too for a hot second (which would not go over well professionally).

So now I'm rambling, but just curious how you all dealt with any similar inclinations in your 40s and 50s (or beyond).
