Not surprised at all, follow the oil money - lots of steak and lamb getting eaten. Probably lots of secret wine cellars, too. Wealthy Muslims often flout haram when in the mood.

I would be obese if I lived in PR - fried pork and mofongo every day. Ceviche would be my vegetable.
 
Regarding PR, I only had mofongo once, and it was great. Tostones were blander than bland yet both tostones and mofongo are both made from plantains. Mofongo must be flavored somehow, and I wonder if there’s a cultural standard or if it’s up to each chef.
 
Mofongo is a tasty dish, no doubt. But it’s probably more the Rice & Beans that’s the contributing factor… the Puerto Rican equivalent dish to French Fries.

And damn, did I loves me some Rice & Beans when I was there!! :0)
