The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

I don’t hate them, I just don’t prefer them. I love The Godfather, I really liked His Girl Friday, and a lot of Buster Keaton’s stuff is hilarious. Some things just don’t speak to me. Others do.

I’ve seen clips of virtually all of them during my film studies course back in college. I’ve seen nearly all of Casablanca and I just didn’t find it to be worth finishing. Arabia and Gone require setting aside enough time. I’m sure there are others like that on the list.

Stick with Hitchcock and Wilder. Never boring. I haven't seen Gone With the Wind or Lawrence of Arabia either.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

Wasn’t there a European group that compiled the best from Europe? BFI?

The BFI compiled the top 50 global list in 2012.

  1. Vertigo (1958)
  2. Citizen Kane (1941)
  3. Tokyo Story (1953)
  4. The Rules of the Game (1939)
  5. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
  6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
  7. The Searchers (1956)
  8. Man with a Movie Camera (1929)
  9. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
  10. 8½ (1963)
  11. Battleship Potemkin (1925)
  12. L'Atalante (1934)
  13. Breathless (1960)
  14. Apocalypse Now (1979)
  15. Late Spring (1949)
  16. Au Hasard Balthazar (1966)
  17. Seven Samurai (1954)
  18. Persona (1966)
  19. Mirror (1975)
  20. Singin' in the Rain (1952)
  21. L'Avventura (1960)
  22. Contempt (1963)
  23. The Godfather (1972)
  24. Ordet (1955)
  25. In the Mood for Love (2000)

I've only seen six of these. Not surprising since half the top 12 is from before WW2.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

If we're being technical, none of these movies deserve to be on a top 25 of all time list other than for $$$. 12 Angry Men might make the top 100 best movies. The Godfather and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly make the top 100 for most fun.

I mean if we're talking most influential movies or something then yeah, the list would have to change. If we're talking best films though there's a case for most if not all of them even if they're not your cup of tea.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

The IMDB list is entirely based on fan votes. For comparison, the AFI top 25

1. CITIZEN KANE (1941)
2. THE GODFATHER (1972)
3. CASABLANCA (1942)
4. RAGING BULL (1980)
5. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)
6. GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
7. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)
8. SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)
9. VERTIGO (1958)
10. THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939)
11. CITY LIGHTS (1931)
12. THE SEARCHERS (1956)
13. STAR WARS (1977)
14. PSYCHO (1960)
15. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)
16. SUNSET BLVD. (1950)
17. THE GRADUATE (1967)
18. THE GENERAL (1927)
19. ON THE WATERFRONT (1954)
20. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
21. CHINATOWN (1974)
22. SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959)
23. THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940)
24. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (1982)
25. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)

Didn't see 5, 6, 7, 11, 18. 11 and 18 were Chaplin movies but I did see "The Kid" which I enjoyed a lot. Gonna have to check out the 2 listed.

Kinda surprised Of Mice and Men wasn't on the list(the original not the remake).

The IMDB list is entirely based on fan votes.
This isn't true, there's a weighted component for people who have rated/watched a lot of films I believe, kinda like super users if you will. That said I don't know exactly how the IMDB formula works but it's not quite as simple as fan votes and even then I'm not sure fan votes is such a terrible thing anyhow.

The other thing is some movies do get overrated initially (super hero movies almost always do as the comic book nerds votes start pouring in) and then come back to earth (once the weighted votes come in if I had to guess).

I haven't seen seven of these movies (5, 7, 11, 16, 18, 19 and 22).

I'd be interested in your take on these (I'm triangulating to locate where you are broken):

Maltese Falcon
It Happened One Night
La Grande Illusion
Sunset Boulevard

Sunset Boulevard is one of my all timers. Maltese Falcon and It Happened One Night are right up there. Never seen the other. I know you weren't asking me, but Sunset was listed so I had to respond.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

Most around here probably know Barbara Stanwyck only from the Big Valley. I thought she was a really good actress from the "Golden Age of Hollywood" and if you get a chance check out The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity, Ball of Fire, Ladies They Talk About. Stella Dallas is supposed to be one of her best but I've yet to see it.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

There are people here who will cut you if you call it anything less than A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I think it's the biggest steaming pile in movie history and the laziest performance by director, writer, and actors I've ever witnessed. I'm sure the costume design was fine.

mookie was in town this past weekend and took the storrow exit toward the fens. at the light mookie could see the fens and said outloud "when i tell you to put a body "in the mAAAHHHHHHHHsh, i mean IN THE MAAAHHHHHHSH"

nobody in the car laughed except for mookie :(

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

Liked, haven't seen, haven't seen, meh.
Loved ("When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it")
Loved (Claudette Colbert, mmmmmm)
meh
slightly better than meh

So, we did it in the music thread. How about your 10 Island movies?

There'a also Baby Face - one of the films that resulted in the "Hollywood Code". It's hilarious how uptight American stiffs were about sexual suggestiveness on camera, despite recently exiting the Jazz Age. If they could see what Hollywood gets away with today, they'd literally explode.

Re: The IMDB top 25 - how many have you seen?

SS gonna SS

Not exactly Mr. subtlety.

That was very tongue in cheek. I very much enjoyed the first one but felt like I plodded through 2 & 3. The comment was born more of how the votes are generated than objecting to anyone enjoying them. I've typically always taken a, "to each his own" view regarding pop culture.

1a and 1b.

Have not seen the bold:

1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

I think were you to watch it now it's too late - you wouldn't be to without preconceptions.

Haven't seen:

1. CITIZEN KANE (1941)
2. THE GODFATHER (1972)
