Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#28 - Ferris State Bulldogs
All-Time Record (Division 1): 592-639-132 (.483)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 3 (2003, 2012, 2014)
NCAA Tournament Record: 5-3
Frozen Four Appearances: 1
Best Result: National Runner Up (2012)
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 3 (CCHA - 2002-2003, 2011-2012; WCHA - 2013-2014) Tournament - 0
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 32.6449
Change: 4.8349 (+ 17.39%)
Last Season Position: 28 (unchanged)

The Ferris State Bulldogs come in at #28, the same position they held last season. The Bulldogs made a smooth transition into the WCHA, capturing the MacNaughton Cup for the first time. En route to the Regular Season title, Ferris State won 29 games (second most in school history), lost just 11 (tied for fewest in school history), and had a .709 winning percentage (second best in school history). Moreover, the Bulldogs advanced to the Regional Final for the third time in three trips to the NCAA Tournament. All said, it was a tremendous season for Ferris State. The Bulldogs will look to continue their run up the rankings (they have added 24 points since the 2010-2011 season) next season. However, it will be an uphill climb, as Bob Daniels' squad will lose four of their top six scorers from last season. On the bright side, the Bulldogs should be set in net, as C.J. Motte returns following a tremendous junior campaign. With five consecutive .500 or better seasons, look for Ferris State to continue working their way up the rankings. For now, they sit at #28.

#27 - Dartmouth Big Green
All-Time Record (Division 1): 1057-1129-123 (.484)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 4 (1948, 1949, 1979, 1980)
NCAA Tournament Record: 4-4
Frozen Four Appearances: 4
Best Result: National Runner Up (1948, 1949)

Last Season Position: 26 (down 1 spot)

The Dartmouth Big Green come in at #27. The Big Green struggled last season, winning just 10 games en route to their worst season since 1995-1996. However, Dartmouth does have some reason for optimism heading into the 2014-2015 season. The Big Green lose just 5 seniors from last year's squad, return their top 18 scorers, including 16 goal scorer Eric Neiley, and also return top netminder Charles Grant. Dartmouth does hold a significant lead over the teams directly below them, but the Big Green will need to make more trips back to the NCAA Tournament and maybe win some conference hardware as well to keep up with the hard-charging programs below them. For now, Dartmouth sits at #27.

#26 - Notre Dame Fighting Irish
All-Time Record (Division 1): 769-809-134 (.488)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 7 (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014)
NCAA Tournament Record: 6-7
Frozen Four Appearances: 2 (2008, 2011)
Best Result: National Runner Up (2008)

National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 40.1649
Change: 0.7035 (+ 1.78%)
Last Season Position: 25 (down 1 spot)

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish come in at #26. The Irish had another strong campaign in 2013-2014, winning 23 games, and producing a winning percentage over .500 for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. Despite getting leaped by the reigning national champions, Notre Dame is a program on the rise. All 7 of Notre Dame's NCAA Tournament appearances have come in the last 11 seasons. The Fighting Irish have converted two of those trips into Frozen Four appearances. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, the Irish have yet to convert one of those opportunities into a national title, and that is the main thing keeping them from climbing even further in this list. Notre Dame has a strong incoming freshman class that will look to replace all the talent the Irish lost from this past season. Notre Dame lost their top 2 scorers and 5 of the top 8, along with their top netminder. However, Jeff Jackson has shown that he is more than capable of leading Notre Dame back to the tournament and potentially to the promised land. If they do that, they will move up in the rankings, but for now they sit at #26.

#25 - Miami RedHawks
All-Time Record (Division 1): 665-630-109 (.509)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 11
NCAA Tournament Record: 8-11
Frozen Four Appearances: 2 (2009, 2010)
Best Result: National Runner Up (2009)
Most Dominant Season*: 2009-2010 (29-8-7 (.739), CCHA Regular Season Champions, Frozen Four - National Semifinalists)
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 4 (CCHA - 1992-1993, 2005-2006, 2009-2010, 2012-2013) Tournament - 1 (CCHA - 2011)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 46.6971
Change: 0.3484 (+ 0.75%)
Last Season Position: 23 (down 2 spots)

The Miami RedHawks come in at #25. Miami had one of the more difficult transitions in college hockey this past season, as the RedHawks finished at the bottom of the NCHC standings despite many predictions that they would top the league in its inaugural campaign. Injuries, inconsistent goaltending, and sloppy play cost Miami dearly, as the RedHawks finished with the program's worst record in over a decade. Also ended was Miami's 8 consecutive seasons of advancing to the NCAA Tournament. However, that run is what shot Miami up the rankings to get where they are. Prior to the 2003-2004 season, the RedHawks had just two trips to the NCAA Tournament, and had topped 22 victories just once. Since then, Miami has made two trips to the Frozen Four, including coming oh so close to the National Title in 2009. The RedHawks will look to rebound next season, as they return their top 8 scorers, their entire blueline, and both netminders. Once again Miami will look to challenge for conference hardware, and perhaps make another run in the NCAA Tournament. If they do that, they will have a shot at moving up in these rankings. For now, they sit at #25.

Cornell
Harvard
Yale

Union

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

What is "Most Dominant Season"? Does that mean Miami's 09-10 season (as defined by your formula) was the most dominant of any team in the NCAA era?

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

How do you determine Most Dominant Season? Seems like there are wide array of factors like winning pct, total wins in a season, hardware collected, average margin of victory, top players, RPI ranking, Pairwise Ranking etc...

Curious

I have a formula that includes basically everything you've listed. There is a thread around here somewhere that discusses it in more detail.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#24 - Providence Friars
All-Time Record (Division 1): 886-867-132 (.505)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 10
NCAA Tournament Record: 10-16
Frozen Four Appearances: 3 (1964, 1983, 1985)
Best Result: National Runner Up (1985)
Most Dominant Season*: 1982-1983 (33-10-0 (.767), ECAC Regular Season Champions, Frozen Four - 3rd Place)
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 2 (ECAC - 1963-1964, 1982-1983) Tournament - 4 (ECAC - 1964, 1981; Hockey East - 1985, 1996)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 48.6853
Change: 8.8981 (+ 22.36%)**
Last Season Position: 24 (unchanged)

The Providence Friars come in at #24. The Friars had one of the program's best campaigns in recent memory in 2013-2014. Providence returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. The Friars also had their first 20+ win season since 2001, and their best winning percentage (.641) since 1989-1990. Put another way, since Nate Leaman took over in Providence, he has more victories (53) in his three seasons than his predecessor (Tim Army) did in his last 5 seasons. Coach Leaman has his Friar group in great position heading into the upcoming season, as Providence returns their ace netminder Jon Gillies, as well as their top 5 scorers, and 11 of their top 13. That should put a return trip to the NCAA Tournament back in the Friars' sights, and winning some conference hardware for the first time in over a decade is well within reach. If the Friars are able to pull off those feats, especially if they were to make a return trip to the Frozen Four, they will look to climb the rankings. For now, they sit at #24.

**Each season I go back through and triple check the data to ensure that it is correct. Given the vast amount of data used, there is usually a mistake or two that I catch that results in a team either gaining or losing points that they normally would not have. This year, I found that I had Providence's NCAA Tournament record incorrect. As a result, their point increase for this season is about 3.5 points higher than it otherwise would have been.

All-Time Record (Division 1): 373-467-97 (.449)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 4
NCAA Tournament Record: 7-3
Frozen Four Appearances: 2 (2012, 2014)

Points Earned - 57.2992
Change: 45.6630 (+ 392.42%)
Last Season Position: 37 (up 14 spots)

The reigning NCAA National Champion Union Dutchmen come in at #23. The Dutchmen have rocketed up the rankings since I've been keeping track (2009-2010 season). In my initial ranking, the Dutchmen came in at #52 with 0.6174 points. They've managed to jump 29 spots and add over 50 points in just four seasons (you're on notice Army!). The majority of those points were earned this past season when Union dominated their competition en route to the National Championship. The 45.6630 points they added this season are by far the most any team has ever added in one season since I've been keeping track of the data. Needless to say, it has been a glorious run for the fans in Schenectady. Going forward, Rick Bennett will have his work cut out for him as Union loses 4 of their top 6 scorers, including all everything Shayne Gostisbehere. However, if he can continue the tremendous run they have been on, Union will likely continue their race up the rankings. For now, they sit at #23.
