Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

OK. No big deal. Was just curious. If it's a hassle to change results then don't bother. It's a relatively quick calculation in my decade results, but I don't do measurements vs NCAA champions; it's vs top 10 so there's usually more leeway if one result changes.

Understandable. Mine isn't terribly difficult to change, it would just take awhile. Again, if you remind me when the top 100 tournament is over, I'll see if I have time to do it. Like I said though, I wouldn't anticipate any big changes. The bottom of the bottom AHA teams would likely see some increase in points, but not enough to move past Army. The biggest differences would be from the teams that have played Yale a significant amount of times. For example, Princeton gained around 1.5 points, and that was almost entirely because Yale won, and Princeton has a tremendous history with Yale. Switch the Yale-QU game, and they probably stay very close to where they were last season.

While we're at it FS23, it's nice to have you still posting here, even if it's become somewhat limited. You contribute a lot.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

A little behind schedule, but...

Coming in at #26...

Dartmouth - 38.6488 Points

The Big Green had an average season, going 15-14-5 in the ECAC. Dartmouth did add just over 3.25 points to their totals though, thanks largely to Yale's national title. Last season, Dartmouth was ranked #26.

Coming in at #27...

Colgate - 30.6333 Points

The Raiders struggled in conference play, but finished with an overall record of 14-18-4. Colgate also benefitted from Yale winning the national championship, as the Raiders gained just over 1.5 points on the season despite an unimpressive record. Last season, Colgate was ranked #27.

Coming in at #28...

Ferris State - 27.8098 Points

The Bulldogs had a mediocre season, going 16-16-5 in the CCHA. Ferris State gained 0.43 points this season. Last season, Ferris State was ranked #28.

Coming in at #29...

Northeastern - 25.7628 Points

The Huskies struggled in Hockey East this season, finishing last, and only going 9-21-4 overall. However, the Huskies also benefitted slightly from Yale's national title. The Huskies earned nearly 3/4 of a point on the season despite the awful record. Last season, the Huskies were ranked #29.

Coming in at #30...

Quinnipiac - 23.932 Points

The biggest mover in this year's rankings, the Bobcats had their program's best season ever. QU won the ECAC Regular Season title, earned the #1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, and advanced all the way to the title game. As a result, the Bobcats gained just under 20 points on the season. Last season, Quinnipiac was ranked #44.

Coming in at #21...

Yale - 72.6486 Points

The Bulldogs followed a strong regular season with an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament to win it all. The program's first national championship boosted the Bulldogs nearly 39 points, more than doubling their program total. This marks the third consecutive year that the national champion earned between 38-39 points. Last season, Yale was ranked #26.

Coming in at #22...

St. Lawrence - 69.0047 Points

The Saints had a strong season, going 18-16-4, and had 2 Hobey Baker finalists. The decent record and strong individual accomplishments, along with Yale winning the national title, increased St. Lawrence's total by over 4.5 points. Last season, SLU was ranked #21.

Coming in at #23...

Miami - 46.3487 Points

The Redhawks had a strong campaign, winning the CCHA regular season title and making the NCAA Tournament Regional Finals. As a result, the RedHawks earned nearly 3.25 points this season. Last season, Miami was ranked #22.

Coming in at #24...

Providence - 39.7872 Points

The Friars went into the last game of the regular season with a chance to win the Hockey East Regular Season championship, but fell short to a strong Lowell squad. Overall, the Friars had a respectable 17-14-7 record. Consequently, the Friars added nearly 2 points to their totals. Last season, Providence was ranked #23.

Coming in at #25...

Notre Dame - 39.4614 Points

The Irish won the CCHA Playoff title, finished second in the CCHA Regular Season, made an NCAA Tournament, and went 25-13-3. For their season, Notre Dame earned almost 2.25 points to advance ever so close to the Friars from Providence. Last season, Notre Dame was ranked #24.

Yeah, there are a few spots where there are big gaps. Although, this certainly isn't the biggest gap between teams. That being said, anything over 5 points is a fairly significant gap within these rankings. Historically (well, at least over the three years where I've kept track), making a Frozen Four will generally earn a team around 8 points, a Runner up finish a bit less than 20, and a national title a bit less than 40. Consequently, it would probably take a Miami title to bridge this particular gap, although a runner-up finish in the right set of circumstances may be enough to push them up to #22.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

Coming in at #16...

Minnesota-Duluth - 110.929 Points

The Bulldogs struggled this season with a youthful lineup, going 14-19-5. However, Duluth did manage a decent record against national champions this season, and earned slightly more than 1/4 of a point. Last season, Duluth was ranked #16.

Coming in at #17...

Rensselaer - 102.62 Points

The Engineers rebounded nicely from a disappointing 2011-2012 season with a 2nd place finish in the ECAC, and an overall record of 18-14-5. RPI just missed out on the NCAA Tournament, but were helped tremendously by their history with Yale. Consequently, the Engineers jumped the 100 point mark by adding just over 4 points to their total. Last season, RPI was ranked #17.

Coming in at #18...

New Hampshire - 83.3438 Points

The Wildcats came back with a strong campaign in 2012-2013, earning an NCAA Tournament bid, going 20-12-7 on the season. UNH added just over 3.5 points to their totals. Last season, UNH was ranked #19.

Coming in at #19...

Northern Michigan - 81.1136 Points

These Wildcats struggled this season, en route to a 10th place finish in the CCHA, and a 15-19-4 overall record. As a result, the Wildcats only gained around 1/6 of a point. Last season, NMU was ranked #18.

Coming in at #20...

Bowling Green - 80.1139 Points

The Falcons finished 9th in the CCHA, and went 15-21-5 overall on the season. However, the Falcons managed to go 8-5-0 against former national champions, and as a result earned over 1/2 of a point on the season. Last season, Bowling Green was ranked #20.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

Coming in at #11...

Cornell - 157.7217

The Big Red struggled this season, finishing 10th in the competitive ECAC. However, despite a disappointing 15-16-3 overall record, Cornell earned nearly 2.5 points, thanks almost entirely to Yale's national title. Last season, Cornell was ranked #11.

Coming in at #12...

Lake Superior State - 154.4584 Points

The Lakers struggled this season, putting up a 17-21-1 record in the CCHA en route to an 8th place finish. As a result, LSSU only added around 1/4 of a point to their totals. Last season, LSSU was ranked #12.

Coming in at #13...

Colorado College - 149.5351 Points

The Tigers struggled throughout the regular season in the WCHA, but nearly pulled off a late-season miracle by reaching the Final Five title game, only to fall to Wisconsin. As a result, the Tigers added roughly 1/2 of a point to their totals, thanks in large part to their 11-12-2 record against national champions this season. Last season, CC was ranked #13.

Coming in at #14...

Harvard - 127.793 Points

The Crimson hit the lottery so to speak when Yale won the national championship. No program has beat up on Yale like Harvard, and that earned the Crimson around 8.5 points. That may help take the sting out of an awful 10-19-3 finish in the ECAC where they finished dead last. Last season, Harvard was ranked #15.

Coming in at #15...

Clarkson - 126.917

The Golden Knights remain the highest ranked program that has never won a national title. Thanks to Yale's national title, the Knights earned just over 3 points on the season. Clarkson finished 9th in the ECAC with an overall record of 9-20-7. Last season, Clarkson was ranked #14.

Clarkson is the highest-ranked team without a title, as you said... is Yale the lowest-ranked team with a title? Seems surprising for a squad with as much history as they have.

Yes. Yale is the lowest ranked program with a title. Keep in mind, only 5 schools have 1 national title (Harvard, Duluth, Northern Michigan, Bowling Green, and Yale). Some stats around those 5 programs...

NCAA Tournament Appearances:
1. Harvard - 21
2. Bowling Green - 9
3. Minnesota Duluth - 8
3. Northern Michigan - 8
5. Yale - 6

NCAA Tournament Wins:
1. Harvard - 14
1. Minnesota Duluth - 14
3. Northern Michigan - 10
4. Bowling Green - 7
4. Yale - 7

NCAA Frozen Fours:
1. Harvard - 12
2. Minnesota Duluth - 4
3. Northern Michigan - 3
4. Bowling Green - 2
4. Yale - 2

Regular Season League Titles:
1. Harvard - 10 (only counting ECAC)
2. Bowling Green - 7
3. Minnesota Duluth - 3
3. Northern Michigan - 3
3. Yale - 3

Conference Tournament Titles:
1. Harvard - 8
2. Bowling Green - 5
2. Northern Michigan - 5
4. Minnesota Duluth - 3
5. Yale - 2

All-time Winning Percentage:
1. Harvard - 59.84%
2. Northern Michigan - 54.43%
3. Bowling Green - 51.78%
4. Yale - 49.7%
5. Minnesota Duluth - 49.38%

While Yale has been playing longer than anyone else, they simply don't have the résumé to deserve to be ahead of anyone else on the list. Of course, if they keep up their pace over the last 5 years, they will likely pass Bowling Green and Northern Michigan soon, and with another title could pass Minnesota Duluth. For right now though, they are at the bottom of the heap when it comes to ranking national champions...at least using my formula.

UMD almost 2 to 1 for wins to appearances. I know titles matter, but not bad.

And I dare say that claim to infamy will last for a long long time.

Yeah, the Bulldogs have one of the highest wins/appearance ratios at 1.75 wins/appearance. The only school better with more than 5 NCAA Appearances is LSSU, which has 20 NCAA Wins in 10 NCAA Appearances.

Other schools with solid numbers?

Maine - 1.66 wins/appearance
North Dakota - 1.57 wins/appearance
Wisconsin - 1.56 wins/appearance
Minnesota - 1.53 wins/appearance

Another amazing stat about LSSU is that they are 7-1 in their 8 Frozen Four games...tops amongst any program.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

Coming in at #6...

Boston University - 346.2341 Points

The Terriers had a decent season, going 21-16-2 in Jack Parker's last campaign, and nearly won the Hockey East Tournament, falling in the title game to Lowell. That was good enough to earn the Terriers nearly 3/4 of a point. Last season, BU was ranked #6.

Coming in at #7...

Wisconsin - 344.0009 Points

The Badgers started the season off on the wrong foot, winning only 1 of their first 10, but they rebounded with a hot streak in the second half to win the Final Five Tournament, make the NCAA Tournament, and finish with a 22-13-7 record. Consequently, the Badgers earned almost 3.5 points on the season. Last season, Wisconsin was ranked #7.

Coming in at #8...

Michigan State - 234.1986 Points

The Spartans struggled in 2012-2013, finishing with a 14-25-3 overall record, and in dead last in the CCHA. As a result, the Spartans lost nearly 1/2 of a point. Last season, Michigan State was ranked #8.

Coming in at #9...

Maine - 170.6462 Points

The Black Bears had a disappointing season in 2012-2013, finishing in a tie for 7th in Hockey East and had a 11-19-8 record overall. The poor season meant that Maine only garnered less than 1/4 of a point, primarily from their record against National Champions (they went 4-3-1) and some success against Yale in their past. Last season, Maine was ranked #9.

Coming in at #10...

Michigan Tech - 161.5391 Points

The Huskies struggled at times, yet impressed at times, in a season where they finished 10th in the WCHA, won their first GLI in 30+ years, and held an overall record of 13-20-4. As a result, the Huskies earned about 1/6 of a point on the season. Last season, Michigan Tech was ranked #10.
