I'm pretty sure the answer is that they had very limited opportunities to beat other teams that made the NCAA tournament. They did not manage to beat Minnesota State in 5 tries, they did well against Michigan and BGSU but neither managed to make the tournament. Their only win over an NCAA tournament team was the win over UMD. I'm pretty sure alot of the points are based on conference titles (MTU failed to win the regular season or post season WCHA titles), NCAA tournament results (lost in first game) and results against teams that did well in the NCAA tournament. It has very little to do with chitting the bed in one game and a ton more to do with lack of opportunities.

Michigan likley outranks MTU for the season because they went 3-7 against tournament teams while MTU went 1-6-1 including the loss to SCSU in the tournament, but they only had an opportunity to play 2 teams in the regular season and most of their chances were against one team, the #1 overall seed going into the tournament.

With the NCAA Tournament right around the corner, I thought I would post quick regarding the potential for each team in the top 20 to move in the standings.

Michigan: The Wolverines will likely retain the top spot given their run to the NCAA Tournament. However, a first round exit, coupled with a North Dakota national title would put the two programs very close. (Potential Finishing Spots: #1 or #2)

North Dakota: The Sioux will not be caught by anyone, and as described above, if they win the national title, they will have a chance to overtake the top spot. (Potential Finishing Spots: #1 or #2)

Boston University: The Terriers will not catch Minnesota. BU and BC will likely duke it out for the #4 position, and likely whoever has the better NCAA Tournament run will take the spot. However, Denver lurks behind, and if the Pioneers can make a deep run they could sneak past the Boston Schools. (Potential Finishing Spots: #4, #5, or #6)

Boston College: See BU above. (Potential Finishing Spots: #4, #5, or #6)

Denver: The Pioneers cannot be caught by Wisconsin, and DU is a bit behind BU and BC. They likely finish #6, but a title run will almost certainly mean moving up to #4. (Potential Finishing Spots: #4, #5, or #6)

Harvard: Barring a title run, the Crimson will not likely move up in the rankings, but they will close the gap with CC. On the flip side, Harvard won't likely be caught unless Duluth wins the title. (Potential Finishing Spots: #13, #14, or #15)

Duluth: Similar to Harvard, Duluth is unlikely to move up in the rankings barring a national title, and are unlikely to move down unless Providence (or potentially Yale) win the title. (Potential Finishing Spots: #12-17)

Providence and Yale will likely move into the top 20 with Frozen Four runs, and Providence may move into the Top 20 with a Regional Final appearance (they also have a shot even if they lose in the first round).

With a national title, Notre Dame will be on the cusp of the Top 20, but will likely be just on the outside looking in.

Ferris State and Northeastern will push the top 25 with a title, but will likely need a Frozen Four birth to move up at all (and run the risk of being caught from behind).

Quinnipiac and St. Cloud will be in the top 25 with a national title, but may move up even without a Frozen Four birth.

Massachusetts Lowell will be on the doorstep of the top 25 with a national title, but may move up even without an NCAA Tournament win.

RIT will crack the top 30 with a national title, but may move up even without an NCAA Tournament win.

michigan is in the NCAA tournament.

Two things:

1) I will be entering in the data from the 2015-2016 season over the next few weeks for the exact rankings, but my initial thoughts are:

(a) The battle for the #1 spot will be extremely close. North Dakota just put up one of the top 25 seasons in the NCAA Tournament era, very similar to Union in 2013-2014 who earned 45 points from their title. Michigan did make the Regional Final, and that may have been just enough to hold on to the top spot. Either way, it is going to be extremely tight for who ends up #1 after this season.

(b) Boston College probably takes over the #4 spot with their run to the Frozen Four. BU probably goes to #5, with DU inching closer but staying at #6. I don't think Denver did enough to make up enough ground on BU despite plastering them in the tournament.

(c) Quinnipiac will make another jump. QU will likely be just on the cusp of the top 25.

2) Are there any volunteers who would like to help with posting the rankings on here when they are complete? drshoen did a great job last season with finishing it up, but I don't want to place the burden squarely on him to do it again. If you would like to volunteer, please PM me, and we will figure it out.

I finished entering the data for the 2015-2016 season, and will go through and double check the numbers over the next couple days. I will begin posting the teams, hopefully, sometime this weekend. Again, if there are any volunteers to help post teams, it would be greatly appreciated.
