The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

While I didn't figure it out, it would be pretty easy to do. North Dakota would come out on top, with Wisconsin and DU close behind, I believe.

Maine would be the team that I think might really jump given that they have had a lot of sucess in a short amount of time (last few years not withstanding).

With the exception of Princton, none of the teams ranked 40 or below have been playing at the D1 level for all that long, I wouldn't expect them to have had the opportunity to earn many points. Makes you feel bad for those long suffering Princton fans.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

I don't see any of the defunct programs cracking the top 50. They have a collective 0 NCAA Tournament appearances, and very few conference titles. St. Louis might be the best bet to score some points as they won 3 CCHA Regular Season Titles and 3 CCHA Tournament Titles. I haven't done all the research, but I would imagine that they would have significant losing records overall, which would hurt.

Wayne State went to the NCAAs.

Army's been playing hockey for more than 100 years. AIC has been playing since 1948, Holy Cross since 1966 and Air Force since 1968.

I did not know that. I thought that they had moved up with the demise of a D2 tournament. Showing my western bias.

Apparently I've blocked the '03 Tournament from my memory. :)

Wayne State is the only program (so far) to have made an NCAA Tournament and then dissolve their program.

There has definitely been some good history from teams at the bottom of this list. Army has more wins than any team in the bottom half of the rankings, and 15th overall. AIC, Holy Cross and Air Force all have at least 600 D-1 wins as well.

Maine would definitely jump. Like I said, I haven't done the calculations, but they would probably be in the top-5. North Dakota, Michigan, Denver and Wisconsin would all be ahead of them.

Those teams also lost out by having been independent for so many years, no conference titles (regular season or tournament playoff) to compete for.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

Still in the top 10. Nice!

At least for one more year! Hopefully they can have a good season next year and solidify their spot in the top 10. If they have another 4-win season and LSSU, CC or Cornell do anything next year, it will be very difficult for them to keep their top-10 status.

That's why we need Cary Eades!!!

I really think just about anyone would be able to get more than 4 wins. Eades would be a great "get" for Tech. He would get the Huskies back to respectability, and challenge for home ice (not necessarily the first year). It sounds like Hastings might be your guy though. He would also be a very good coach for Tech.

Does that mean Captain Gappy McTooth has decided to coach longer than was expected? I thought Hastings was the dauphin over in Omaha.

I don't see Blais coaching much longer than maybe 4-5 years, but I wouldn't be surprised if he coached longer than that. Guentzel is fully qualified to take over that program though if Hastings leaves.

After Tech lost out on Mel, it appears they will interview multiple coaches and see what they think...I bet Eades and at least one other candidate make the trek to Houghton before a decision is made.

Oh, no doubt, but I just thought that Hastings was being primed for that job and am surprised that he may not be, or rather that he's not willing to wait around for what seems to be longer than he thought. I wasn't thinking Blais would stay even another 4-5 years and maybe Pudgy didn't want to wait that long.

I was under the same impression as well. Blais is entirely unpredictable. It wouldn't surprise me if he retired in two years, and it wouldn't surprise me if he stayed another 8 years. If I were Hastings, I would go to Houghton if offered. At the very least, it can be a grooming spot to move up if an opportunity arrises (UNO or Minnesota perhaps?).

It would be smart. I think for the right, ambitious, energetic guy, Houghton would be the perfect challenge. Of course it could crash and burn too.

If Hastings were to stay at UNO too long he'd end up labelled a career assistant coach. The Mario to Blais's Jacques. I'm pretty sure Guentzel is in grave danger of that too.
