Hmmm, someone leap-frogged RPI despite RPI's trip to the NCAAs.

UMD earned more points this year by winning the championship that all but the top 22 teams in their entire histories. They earned as many points as the bottom 18 teams combined throughout their history.

I hope you're just pointing out just how valuable a national championship is?

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

I hate to burst your bubble, but its not just this sport.
Actually this sport is probably better than most...I'd have to say there is a larger percentage of schools that actually have a chance to win it all than any other D1 sport I can think of...

There are 346 D-I hoops teams. 35 have won the championship. Only 14 have won multiple titles. On the women's side, there have been 14 champions in 30 seasons. Only five teams have won multiple titles.

Ice hockey has had 18 champions; 14 with multiple titles.

So only approximately 10% of the Men's D-1 Hoops teams have won a title, less than 5% have won multiple. In D-1 Hockey, 31% of the teams have won titles, and nearly 25% have won multiple titles.

Additionally, some of those teams at the bottom of the list have not been playing hockey for very many years.

It would be interesting to see the teams sorted by pts/season.

It would also be interesting to see where some of the defunct programs would fall.

I don't see any of the defunct programs cracking the top 50. They have a collective 0 NCAA Tournament appearances, and very few conference titles. St. Louis might be the best bet to score some points as they won 3 CCHA Regular Season Titles and 3 CCHA Tournament Titles. I haven't done all the research, but I would imagine that they would have significant losing records overall, which would hurt.

What about the per season question?
