Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

These threads are often cool, but didn't we just have one last off-season? Why not wait until the next off-season to do another?

These comments are often cool, but why are they made before reading the entire thread? Why not see if your question is answered already before you ask it?

;) :D

Perhaps you could read the thread and see the explanation FS23 gave?

Or perhaps just not criticize someone else's hard work?

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

Yeah, this is a really interesting point in the rankings. Do the lowest of programs who have won a title (probably Bowling Green followed by Northern Michigan) beat the best programs that are currently winless (probably Clarkson followed by New Hampshire... which I believe are the only 2 remaining).

I think seeing BGSU would be the most interesting, and just edging UMD again would just be a bonus. ;)

What are you a BGSU fan? :p

That was the top programs of the 2000's. This is all time.

There's just something fitting about that razor thin victory a quarter century ago making for another razor thin victory here.

Plus, the extra twists of the knife that rankings like this produce are part of the fun. ;)

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

Earlier in the thread we sort of discussed this, but what I said was that if I would have had my formula around say 2005, there are plenty of teams that have made the tournament/Frozen Four since then that would have been in the bottom half. There has been a lot of parity in college hockey over the last 5 years, and Quarterfinal and Frozen Four spots are going to teams that have never been in that position before. The next shoe to fall is when a National Championship goes to a team that has never won before. The last time we had a first time champion was in 1993. I expect that we get a new champion in the next 4-5 years, if not sooner.

If Yale can skate around the WCHA ... ;)

Sitting at #19 is New Hampshire. The Wildcats have posted an impressive 20 NCAA Appearances, along with 7 trips to the Frozen Four. Twice UNH has found itself playing for the National Championship, and was closest to winning it all in 1999, but fell in overtime to Maine. The Wildcats have done just about everything a program can do besides win it all. New Hampshire will have a chance this year, as it looks like UNH has itself set up for another NCAA bid. If they can do that, expect the Wildcats to move up the list.

Wow, can you imagine how high UNH would have been if the refs didn't screw them in every loss they ever had?

Colgate winds up at #27. The (Red) Raiders have made 4 trips to the NCAA tournament, including their memorable run in 1990, advancing all the way to the National Championship.

Their one brush with greatness, if you will.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

At this point we know that winning a title is very important for points.

I think count right to very much confirm- there are 17 teams that have won NC's, and only 18 teams left on the list. What will be very telling is the next team-are they the best team never to win, will the never win pass a winner?

And if I'm reading the results right, the next team should be Clarkson- 20 NCAA's, 2 runner ups. 4 thirds out do UNH's 2.

Indeed. I would generally put teams like New Hampshire and Clarkson ahead of some teams with a title or two like Bowling Green, Northern Michigan or RPI. This is not a criticism of these rankings, I think fans of any team without a title would trade all of their achievements for one. I remember that CAH's rankings a few years ago had those two schools above some that had won National Titles.

I think UNH, Clarkson, even tUMD would be higher than those three, but that's just an observation. FS23 has the numbers, I don't.
