The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

I don't know about keeping Brandt and Winchester. I don't want any fog of the past in the room. It has to be 100% Hasting's way and the players need a clean break from the past. Plus, we've already lost the top 2 recruits and supposedly Brandt was the bridge to them.

Hastings kept Knott and the other assistant when he went to Mankato. And turned around a perennial losing team the next year. Whatever Hastings decides will be fine. There was a reason Andy was kept on when Granato and Oz were let go.

Not sure I would put the blame for losing those 2 recruits at the feet of Brandt. Brandt was hired May '22 with Fink commiting in Aug '20 and Buckberger in Jan '21 long before Brandt was ever in the conversation. Oz was the lead recruiter and D whisper and his dismissal would have a much greater bearing on those 2 decommits, especially a D like Buckberger where Oz would have been his positional coach. Obviously Brandt did not help with some miracle turn around to save Granato's job, but that ship had been taking on water and sinking for 6 and a half years before Brandt had any role.

Minnesota gets the opportunity to pay a fourth coach too.

I agree but they haven't up to this point. This guy has a longer relationship with Hastings than with Motzko and has a great resume - make a run at him and see what happens.

EDIT: I didn't realize that the third paid assistant rule isn't currently in effect - my mistake.

All good. The move from Mankato to Minnesota was also family related for him, was commuting down from the Twin Cities and had a baby so wanted to stay closer to home. If both teams choose to start paying a goalie coach I'd guess he stays with the Gophers. Don't think Wisconsin would throw the type of money at that third assistant position to outspend Minnesota enough to convince someone to uproot everything and move. But that's just me speculating.

If McIntosh has proved anything during his tenure, money will not be the reason that they don't land a coach that they want. My guess is that it would come down to uprooting his family and how important that is to him.

So Regner replaces Connely as Dir of Hockey Ops. Seems like Brandt and Hasty are still getting to know each other to determine if its the right fit. And the third paid assistant is yet to be determined once it goes in effect.

Considering the G issues over the last decade, I cant imagine them not.making the 3rd assistant a G coach.

Just FYI y’all…the complete ineptitude of these message boards has led me to not care one bit. If they improve or there’s a better place to chat about revamped UW hockey, I’ll join you there. Good luck to Badger hockey!

Lol. Badger fans have been pissed for a few years. The transition from the hate message board to legit hockey talk may take a while.

Also I couldn't find a Gopher message board last time I looked (which was a month or so ago)... What the heck happened to them?

On a different note... I expect the Badgers to win next year. Not sure how much they will win next year. Maybe it will take 2-3 years before they click. But I would guess, based on Hastings track record, that we are in the playoffs next year. We have more "talent" than Mankota.

I'm interested to see how long it takes the fan base to come off the bench. I already got season tickets for the first time ever. So I'm ready to go. But the average fan may take a while. And the current students don't know jack about what to do other than a few die hards. So I think couple years and it's back to "normal". The idea that badger fans are gone forever is not a thing, IMO. Badger fans love to party and have fun. When the hockey team starts winning the fans will follow. Good things are coming.

My precious comment stated we have more "talent" than mankota. That may not be right. Based on recruiting comments and ranking I guess so. But granato was so bad at developing talent... we have really don't know what we are working with. Does it take two years for Hastings to turn them into something good? Does it a month? Is it too late for these guys? Is it the system or just the attitude? Probably a combo of everything.

This is really interesting to see what happens.

Zach Urdahl entered the portal over the weekend

Another native WI lad leaving. Sad. I liked his game. Newton wasn't the guy they hoped he would be when he got to Wisconsin. Which really does make me question granato's eye for talent. Any moron can identify top end talent. It takes skill to identify somebody with potential and then developed them. He was bad at that. I think yes it will take a couple years to get where we wanna be. On the other hand trading Fink for Mankato's best player and trading Newton and Urdal for the other 2 is a net plus. That buys us time for next year And you know that Knot has got a whole list of players he likes who's already contacted about the future.

How do we define success in terms of attendance? Fill the 2 lower bowls on a gamely basis and have a bit of spill over into the 3rd tier?
