The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

Another native WI lad leaving. Sad. I liked his game. Newton wasn't the guy they hoped he would be when he got to Wisconsin. Which really does make me question granato's eye for talent. Any moron can identify top end talent. It takes skill to identify somebody with potential and then developed them. He was bad at that. I think yes it will take a couple years to get where we wanna be. On the other hand trading Fink for Mankato's best player and trading Newton and Urdal for the other 2 is a net plus. That buys us time for next year And you know that Knot has got a whole list of players he likes who's already contacted about the future.

How do we define success in terms of attendance? Fill the 2 lower bowls on a gamely basis and have a bit of spill over into the 3rd tier?

I think there is going to be some turnover, just because Hastings has to get his program in there and I agree fill the lower 2bowls is a good short term goal.

I think for big ten play it should be a success to get fans up into the third tier. The team still needs to win to draw the fan base back. Here’s to hoping they win early and often!

Agreed. We may not have seen the last of the exodus. Players need to decide now what name they play for, the one in the back of the jersey or the name in front.

in my mind anyone leaving now due to not wanting to play 200’ is a net plus. Each one. The coach has to define what he wants and the players that understand it and embrace it will stay.

it’s a great sign that 3 Mankato kids followed coach Hastings. I can think of no better statement of a coach’s success and respect from their players.

same goes to Fickell. A bunch guys wanted to play for him.

great stuff!

attendance won’t be anywhere near automatic or what we want. Fill the lower bowl and 1/2 the second and that’s an incredible start. I think it will be more like 5,000 to 7,000 to start. Sometimes worse sometimes (Minnesota) better.

year 2 will show how quickly fans come back.

it won’t matter if they only win day 15 games. The improvement on ice will be noticeable and a trajectory will be apparent.

It's sad, but if they don't fit the system, see ya.

I don't care if they're from Achimasahitunanuch,Quebec or tiny Tony, WI. I want hockey players.

Isn't it time to change the thread title?

I don't necessarily care either where they come from. However it's always fun to see a guy like Joe Pavelski make it big. Whose the next Pavs?

If they only win 15 games next year, that will be a major disappointment in my books.

I'm setting my bar low. If year 1 Hastings brings the Badgers back to .500, I see that as a big win. Let's not forget that Hastings hasn't coached in a conference this deep before - we all saw how the B1G dominated the first rounds of the NCAAs - it wasn't a fluke. Give him at least 1 year to build something great.

The only 'major disappointment' would be if they take a significant step back from this year. Then we should be worried.

I think it will be a success if there is notable improvement in play/development but that may not translate to a huge jump in wins. If they win 20 games and get close to .500 in the Big Ten that would be great - anything more than that start designing the Hastings statue for the entrance to the Kohl Center......... :-)

Hastings first year at Kato was in the old WCHA, which was pretty deep. The Mavs tied for 4th that year and made the NCAA tournament, after they had finished 11th the previous 3 years. So I would expect some fairly quick results.
It was part of the Hastings legend in Kato that after a couple of close losses to Denver that November, he had a real Come to Jesus talk with the team and let them know that they shouldn't be satisfied with playing well against the best teams. They should expect to win. They were 3-5-2 at that time, 1-5 in the WCHA. From that point on, they went 19-6-1 to finish the regular season. I imagine at some point next season, he's going to have a similar talk with the Badgers.

It's too soon for me to develop W/L expectations due to the portal being open for weeks yet for players to get into it. The roster is far too undefined yet. Losing Fink and Buckberger is bad. I think Fink would have been around for 3 years and this Kato stud they signed is only here for 1. That would have been a great bridge to get Fink to his So year where he could really be an impact player. Initially I was hoping for a .500 record overall. What horses will be in the stable in September? And no info on the other 2 paid coaches either. Who these guys are could also affect my thoughts on expectations.

And who was it that knocked them out of the Final Five again...? Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5qc7rnjTHg - in case you want a trip down memory lane.:)

But yes this is a good call out. I was thinking it was the year after that. Maybe he's got bad blood from that beatdown in the quarterfinal and he's back for revenge. The long con.

Agree. I personally expect playoffs. Just because of what hes done in the past. If it doesnt happen first year then ok fine its the first year. But I'm thinking Hastings puts his system in and gets attitudes adjusted accordingly and we eventually start rolling sooner rather than later. LFG!

The Stars advance, hopefully Joe can play in the next round, great to see MN go down. My Rangers are sucking! The ppgs in the first 2 games hid even strength flaws and they can't beat a goalie who was in the ushl 2 years ago. Sheesh.

Wild fold like a paper napkin. I can’t like the Stars, even if they have former badgers on them.
